Cool, Thanks Orphes. an "animation pass" doesnt suggest "new animations" though, maybe some minor tweaking and it sounds like its not on anyones list for anytime soon.
First step would be to get that animator. But I guess that is where SOE shared staff comes in handy.

You can play but only on the trial island. You are also limited to level 10. I think you also can't talk to people in the real game directly unless maybe you have an account or something. Not sure about this last one but I know they did something to prevent spamers.
Just curious how long this trial is, also it locks you in the trial island? You cant go out and explore and see what the actual games content is?
If you read the patch notes, it says you can either choose to play at your starting city (depends on race) or choose to play in the trial island, and believe me the trial island is quite small compared to the real world...but I DO recommend you play the trial island because there *should* be more people on it with you compared to starting in the newbie towns, population isnt so great in the starting cities....crafting doesnt get "fun" until level 20+ (when you can acutally craft stuff people wants) but adventuring is fun all levels...
So this "trial" ofers nothing more than a peep on what the world kinda looks like, i wont be able to try any of the real in game content/areas? I hope they dont require you to download the full 20gigs for this trial island. I was really hoping to actually preview the game that i may of maynot subscribe too. This trial island seems like is only offering you to try the gapelay for a tiny bit, im looking to see what the actuall game has to offer content wise not to see if i like the gameplay, we all know what the gameplay is like (spam skills)

The trial is a small download which was one of the specific goals so that people interested in the game could download something manageable.
It is a full implementation of the game from lvl 1-10 although with separate content (so you don't have to download 20gb) and you are isolated some to prevent abuse of the normal world.
Game play from 1-10 in all spheres is going to give you a good idea what the gameplay is like. The trial island also includes two dungeon areas. One is tiny the other one is still smallish compared to some of hte dungeons in live and the dungeons are scaled so they are mostly soloable. The only thing you are not going to get from the trial is a good group experience or the experience of a premier dungeon. So there are some things in the release that will be even better then what you see in the trial.
Yes crunchy-the game is 100% spam skills. Sorry that SOE did not accomodate you with a free year of play that you may know fully the extent of the spamming involved. I personally would be highly upset as well if a game only offered me a free glimpse into their project without even so much as a consideration to the free loaders in the world that have earned the right to have the entire pie and not just a slice.
yay trial island.. played at the end of the open beta and it was simply awful.. lets see what they have done in a year or is it 2.. I forget now =D
even if gameplay is improved.
the toon models are too ugly for me.
Correct me if im wrong but aren't the new character models coming with GU6?
They are the same models with revamped bones and a bit more athletic appearance. The biggest win is the reduced lag in crowded (PC and NPC) camps.
I think the character customization is a bit more than that. I think of it as:
- Bringing back facial customization back to what it was before GU2 I think everyone was satisfied with these options. I am still waiting on the female facial customization results which I think will be important and where not so hot when the test version first came out. The net result is that helms now work and there is some FPS imporvement since release.
- Enhanced body customization. Supposedly better than ever before.
- Enhanced appearance armor. (not sure how much)
Could we get some screenshots of the new models as they appear live? The ones from test are not suitable.

I "lol'ed" at the free year thing. I really wasnt being critical of the game so im not sure why the flame post.
I was just asking about that the trial entails.
I do find the trial kind of silly. I mean EQ2 at least let me run around and check out the world before subscribing. Also i got to check out how various characters played above level 10. It really showed me what i could expect, and it wasnt a year free. 7-14 days with no limits is enough for me. Hell even a 3 day free trial, where i would be able to check out some of the content would be nice.
This trial island cant offer more than how the game runs/looks on my system and letting me spam a few skills (that wasnt an isult).
I dunno, you would think that SOE would offer a similar trial as they did with EQ.
I like how you call people free loaders who want to try the game before buying it....like im going to continually make new trial accounts so i can can keep playing the same crap again...kind of ignorant. From what i can understand about VG is that they need all the players they can get. But thanks for the flame post, ill probably be avoiding the game, there is plenty of games comming out soon anyway. Thanks for the flame post though, it gave me a glimps of what to expect from the community in game.

In case you still have the question they didn't do the eq thing for several reasons.
1. To make the world available it would be a 20g download, they wanted something small like 1-2 gb.
2. They wanted to control spammers and abusers by preventing them from impacting the real game world. You are sorta isolated on trial island so you can't spam the real game world so free accounts are of limited utility for abuse.
those are the main reasons for a trial island approach.
The trial does give you the ability to play any class to lvl 10. It also gives you diplomacy and crafting to level 10. It has a complete game experience with two dungeon areas and a very nice story line for the quests that gives you some lore that ties into the main game. It is a starting area even regular players can start in so some guilds are setting up people there to help new players.
So it is going to give you a good feel for the character, classes, diplomacy, crafting and adventuring parts of the game. Most classes even as early as lvl 10 have some flavor of how they will be and a few chains and special abilities. If you don't like the trial you won't like the game. If you do like the trial then the main game is more of the same but bigger and better in many ways. The only thing that the trial doesn't give you is a good group experience which is something that some people will find missing but isn't missing from the main game at all and in fact is one of my favorite aspects.
Anyway try the trial and come back and let us know if you still think it is not representative and a complete waste of time. I've done it a few times and think it is a great intro to the game and a lot of fun.
Haha! Well if nothing else we both have gotten a laugh from our flame posts. And yes-I think you should re-read your own initial comment-it does infact have a deragatory tone. Trial Isle infact offers quite a bit of the game mechanics past your 'spamming'. However, because it does not fit into your vision of what should be offered-and you have now a full scope of the community from my own single comment, you will not know. Somehow-that doesnt bother me...
How can i be derogatory about a game ive never played? if anything i was derogatory about the trial. I wouldnt mind a 20gig download for an EQ style trial, hell they could even do it like lotro and have you download as needed, theres plenty of ways to get around downloading the whole game, so i dont buy that. I just feel like a very limited island and level cap isnt going to give me much of a taste of what the game has to offer, that is all. With lots of other games out there, and plenty that offer trials that actually let you try the game out and see what kind of content it has to offer, its just another reason for people avoid this game, many of them have never even really heard about this game to begin with.
Honestly doing an eq style trial or lotro style, they could have save a lot of time and money developing the trial island and mabey put the resources to expanding content or polishing the game. I also dont like the sound of isolating trial members from paying members, now they really have no way of previewing what the community is like, or have an ability to ask questions regarding higher level content. Just seems like a very odd way to go about letting potential customers preview the game.
How can i be derogatory about a game ive never played? ......Just seems like a very odd way to go about letting potential customers preview the game.
The Isle of Dawn is shared by both active subs and trial members. If you have a subscription and you roll a new toon, you now have the option of enjoying the new Isle of Dawn or the starter city for your race. In short, you still experience the VG community on the Isle of Dawn.
VG has 3.5 spheres of content to fully eexperience. Its 3 games in one. You may do Adventuring lvls 1-10 which is common in many MMOs. You may do Crafting lvls 1-10 which is common but well done in VG. You may do Diplomacy lvls 1-10 which is unique to VG releasing the rich lore in VG. Or you may do Harvesting(0.5 sphere) which is enjoyed by many and a major money maker feeding the crafting and adventuring spheres.
The Isle of Dawn allows you to experience all of these. It really has a lot of content to try for new and old players alike.

What's interesting is the VG community was quite vocal about their dislikes with the new models. The VG art team really listened and tweaked the models. The community now enjoys and accepted the new models. This really took an about-face. Heartening to see.
Either way...the Trial Isle is Free for those interested in downloading 1G and tasting VG for their own consideration.
