TBH, they look disappointing to me. The AI seems just as stupid as before (aggro range, their attacks, etc.). Animation looks clunky, but that's something that will be fixed hopefully. The powers and their effects don't look very interesting (The black cone AOE thing the guy is shooting out in part 2 somewhat interests me, but everything else looks blah); it mainly looks more like spamming petty attacks rather than using any cool/powerful/devastating attacks that I associate with heroes.
It just doesn't look like they raised the bar very much if at all. Anyways, those are my current thoughts. What do you guys think about it?

I wouldn't judge the game at this point. It's probably got about a year or so yet before release (assuming there's at least ONE pushback, which is emminent) and we really can't judge anything from that video other then for it's graphics, animations, AI... things that can be easily improved upon.
WAR had the exact same scenario. It looked really horrid early on but has improved drastically since then. When you're not this deep in developing the game you're working more or less on core mechanics and the actual game then rather then animations, graphics, AI, and the so forth that was shown in the video.
At this point, since I can't really judge this game for anything other then by what they say they plan to do / what their core concepts are, I've only been judging by their actual ideas of what they want to do with the game. So far, the idea of cel shading for this game is really a make and break. Some games look horrible cel shaded while others can look amazing. Overall I think that sort of idea fits this type of game well and it can give some unique flavor to other MMOs. The same thing can be said about what they want to do about their new combat system, their skill system, and so forth. At this point we can't really fairly judge yet but hope that they're able to get these ideas off of paper and into the game successfully.
If only SW:TOR could be this epic...
AI can be fixed and I think it's too early to judge graphics, especially from that video. I'm going to venture a guess that the black power graphic is potentially serving as a placeholder also. Maybe, maybe not.
What I do expect is for the people who claimed that ED ruined the hero experience for them in CoX to not like this game -- after all, if slamming a boulder and then a train down on top of a gunslinger doesn't kill the mob, well, that 's going to ruin the epic feeling of the game ( ' ;
For those interested, at about 4 minutes into the 2nd video, you can see a brief bit of the power selection screen and the dev talks about the lack of archtypes.
The devs discussed the fact that the characters are all lvl 60, much higher than the level content of the areas they were demoing, to show off the levels and what all the characters could do, which is why many of the threats didn't react to them until attacked in many cases. This was a pre-Alpha build so much of the game is still in the works and the AI wasn't reactive as much as they would have liked.
Animations are still being tweaked and they will tweak it a bit more as they get closer to the beta stage of development. The combat AI is very good just the enemies were ignoring them because of the level tweak but when they showed off Monster Island at Leipzig and the hero was being bashed around by a giant mecha-dinosaur, you could see that for any other hero of lesser levels, they would need to cooperate in order to defeat him, he was using attack patterns that if you didn't watch and predict them, you would get stomped badly. And I still think that the dino could have really gone on a tear if he wanted to, but they kept him on an electronic leash.
They do need a demo that has more of the game tweaks in it but otherwise its coming along just fine, we just have to be patient and let the game get out of Alpha stage and into Beta, and it is there that more of the combat AI will be in it and we will see more balanced characters of equal or lesser levels in the game and being forced to actually use their noodle and fight, and not be cruising in God Mode without injury or loss of health.
Don't fret none, they will give you something more than just a level demo with God-like heroes running around, but real heroes getting hurt and real heroes having to struggle to fight the big boss villain or their nemesis in combat.
It is Cryptic's game to win or lose, and if we're not satisfied with what's happening, we can always move onto something else worth our time and money.
I'm still very excited about this game, as I love the super-hero genre and thought that COX was an excellent start. That being said, I was also underwhelmed with the video footage shown a few weeks ago. I know it's entirely too soon to start making judgment calls, so I definitely hope the next time I see new footage, it's improved.
Otherwise, I'll be a little worried.
I agree. I was also unimpressed with the footage. But I am still hopeful for this game, so I am just going to pretend that I didn't see the demo...
What platforms is CO going to be on? I know DCU's main focus is PS3, and I've seen gameplay of DCU which is way too arcade-ish and SOE can keep that shit. I don't really like the graphics of CO myself, but I'll probably give it a try when it comes out.
its exactly (probably WORST) than CoH???
corny "BAM:, "POW!" going off... i know Champions is more comic-like than CoH, but if this is what Champions is riding on, its not going to last long
That's one terrible run animation, I'll say that. Combat looks like it needs a "Lock On" toggle.
There's alot of work to be done that's for sure.
There's no "Lock On" basically because from what I gather, CO works like a FPS/Action game like AoC or Hellgate where you need to "steer" your character and "point" - aka: aim - your attacks.
However, I have a request for the current beta testers:
Could you please capture some footage about the character generation part and put it up with a link here?
Champions Online is going to be on the Xbox 360 and the PC.
Champions Online is going to be on the Xbox 360 and the PC.
And while there's nothing official, Cryptic has stated that they're interested in bringing CO to the PS3. But it would come at a later date since their first priority are the PC and 360 versions.
