Right. Well i managed to get a bit of play time in open beta and some questions have come to mind.
Firstly, my main class was a shadow warrior, I only managed to achieve rank 9, but it was enough for me to decide I really enjoy the class, I could kite well with strafing shots and snares, a 200 damage instant cast knockback spell, and at level 10 I would have got a root. But... I noticed my renown rank 6 gear had the same armour as a bright wizards renown rank 6 gear.. so, if i dont have more armour, and a bright wizard can crit over a 200 at level one, which I can only scrape at rank 9, what is the point of shadow warriors?
Secondly, tanks. You should of guessed I was fighting for order by now ^.^. In an open rvr zone, a chosen or black orc would run in, with a healer or two on them, and survive against about 10 peoples attacks for a good minute or more, therefore giving the rest of the players hanging back an insentive to come forward at us. I thought this was great, and I already had a rank 7 swordmaster so I went to the open rvr area.. ran forward and.. died because I got nuked by about 6 things at once? I had a sword and board on, is there a certain way to do things?

Bump
Dont really know much about order classes but it sounds to me that you had some bad luck and got into a game where people didnt really know what to do on your side. It happens once in awhile on both sides regardless...some games everyone works together 100% then sometimes 40%...
player levels have alot to do with it too even with the rank up buff....no level 1 is going to beat a level 11 even ranked up to level 8 with the buff. Unless that level 11 just dunno wtf is going on lol.
My bad read it wrong, still the same thing applies whichever team works together the best will win or has the most healers or best class mixes.
I found it useful to pick a 'specialty' for my tank. I made him all toughness for damage mitigation. Toughness and corporeal damage reduction worked well. Some folks want to DO more damage than TAKE it, so they go with weapon skill and strength specialties. Basically you have to find what works best for you. Now you are a 'tough/corporeal' guy and you get hit with magic, then you are taking elemental and spirit damage so you need to find accessories that support a broad spectrum.
(Obviously with no talismans in the OB that will help a bit too. I know I had some decent items with good armor that had no stats so ended up being less than useful to me once an item with stats as compared.)
Well...
Shadow Warrior is a "utility" Ranged DPS while Bright wizard is a "straight" RDPS.
While BW will put out more DPS than a SW, you can kite much better and help out in a larger fight by slowing down, debuffing and generally annoying your opponents.
So... If you and a BW are standing side by side and you see 2 melees coming in your direction your job is primarily to slow down and debuff them while BW has to dps as fast as possible (and avoid burning himself out with combustion ofc.) That isn't to say that you're doing weak DPS, it's just that your primary role isn't just straight burst damage.
So.. in military parlance: BW = artillery, SW = scout/sabotage
I take it you mean the 'talent points?' dont know the name for them, but i didnt get high enough to put any in.
