I dunno, they need to put up enough servers to meet demand, but if they put up too many and ppl start leaving the game after the free month (don't flame, believe it or not, some people might actually not like the game and not continue past the first 30 days), that's going to leave a lot of extra servers.
EQ2 overestimated the demand at launch and when player populations dropped, they merged servers a bit later.
WOW for all its population has a lot of ghost town servers. AOC had a high demand and many servers are empty now.
I'm more interested in the RVR balance. As some ppl may have guessed, there are more ppl playing Chaos Vs Order by the looks of it.
I dont know if this is good or bad. But the game surely seems to be quite popular
It just shows that compared to what some other games did they just don't what to take the risk to accommodate the demand at launch in fear of people leaving the servers later.
You can also see this forced situation as some marketing hype, and reading you "But the game surely seems to be quite popular " it works
edit: ok markoraos, the Faction imbalance thing could be a good explanation...
There is nothing on the order side I like to play, Apparently a lot of people feel the same way. Already stuck in a 15 min. queue on a lowest populated north american server I could find.
I dont mind the idea of balancing but I dont want to have long queues to get into the game.
In theory you could sit in a queue for hours / days then repeat if you have to relog.
I dont want to play an alt char becasue I cant get on a server with my main on, I want to make that choice myself.
Equally I cant imagine everyone that bought the CE wants to be only on a server with people that bought CE so you would have thought there would be the retail number of servers up now not just a few of the servers they are going to have at release.
In terms of how our rollout plan looks like, here are some more details:
1) On day one, our population cap on each server will start at 1/3 of its total cap and then move up to ½ on a rolling basis. We can raise that number any time, no restart of the servers are necessary.
2) As a server approaches cap, we will either raise the cap again or deploy another server of that type. Deployment of a server takes only 30 minutes and our intention is that there are no server queues during the CE/SE period.
3) By day 2, we will raise the server cap of all servers to 2/3.
4) By day 3, we will raise the server cap of all servers to its full cap.
5) Each server’s cap is a bit soft and even our top cap is less than the servers can handle.
6) Depending on how many of our CE/SE players take advantage of the head start, we will add more servers as necessary throughout the entire process.
Once again, our plan (not our goal, but our plan) is to deploy servers as needed to *avoid* long server queues whether it is in the Head Start or beyond. Please keep in mind we needed to have some queuing in Open Beta so we could test the code before launch.
Here’s the list of the next servers of each type that are queued up so that guilds can start making their plans.
We will not open all the CE/SE servers at launch for a number of reasons, one of which is that doing so would be unfair to the SE players who might also want to come into a “fresh” server just like our CE people. We also will not open all the servers we have racked at SE launch as the same reasoning applies to people who didn’t pre-order the game. We will not open all our servers at launch as well since that could lead to servers with too few people in the beginning if people spread out too much.
If this plan doesn’t work, you can expect us to make changes on the fly and/or after launch including free transfers as necessary.
Lolzor. This is not a matter of overpopulated servers but FACTION IMBALANCE. The game denies access to players from grossly overpopulated faction on a particular server. Try rolling Order for a change... Or better yet, have an Order and a Destruction server and switch as needed. Believe me, it really pays to play an underdog in WAR.
Not to stomp on your sermon or anything, but the server I put my Order characters on filled up by the time I'd finished making characters. I started right when they went up. I had to go ahead and make Destruction on another server just to play for a bit.
Go, RP Servers!

Pretty important details, there. It makes sense to me a lot of servers would be at their caps on day 1 of the collector's edition head start because they're only at 1/3 capacity, and this is by design because the and to spread people out across all the servers instead of have 1 server with 30,000 players and the rest of the servers with under 2000.
That's ok I still have 12 hours left on the torrents DL
Could never get fileplanet to work and wasted most of yesterday trying.
Yeah I know, I'm trying not to use the net but man I'm bored
I would like to state that in no way shape or form that anything I receive from SOE influences my opinion about SWG or their company. Im pretty much a typical average player enjoying the game.
There are currently may servers with low pop on both sides a few have order as full. If you are on one of the servers that says Destrection or order, then (418) that means there are 418 people in que for for side. A quick fix is move to a new server. there are many med high and lows to be filled out.

Yeah, servers starting at 1/3 capacity certainly play into this but I remember (and it was like AGES ago /fiddles thumbs ) that during the OB there were queue times for destro, across the board. The low server caps only make the problem worse. Seriously, guys - if you're not REALLY into Destruction, rolling Order, if only for a looksee will get you in the game sooner.
And ofc, listen to server reccomendations - they're not there just for fluf. They are there to help you as well as the game.
An underpop side will have almost non-existent scenario queues and more enemies to fight in Open RvR. By default underpopulated side will get more renown/player since it is a zero-sum game. You cannot get renown and rewards if you can't find enemy players to kill.
Not to hijack this thread, but to the guy who said that he couldnt get fileplanet to work for you, you should REALLY piddle with it more. I used Utorrent and it took forever to get, with fileplanet it took 3 hours for the entire 10gig download. Are you using the dload manager?
There is nothing on the order side I like to play, Apparently a lot of people feel the same way. Already stuck in a 15 min. queue on a lowest populated north american server I could find.
If you actually took a look at the Order classes like I did during open beta, then you would realize that there are mirror classes which are almost EXACTLY the same. Many of the skills are completely identical in both function and dmg/healing. Sometimes the skills are obtained at different levels but by about lvl 10 each mirror class has the EXACT same base skills doing the EXACT same amount of damage or healing.
The only difference between the mirror classes is the names of the skills and the appearance of the characters.

thought it was sep 16 ?
This is CE headstart.
I think special edition starts today, then regular edition preorders on tues. Though i'm still having problem with the authentication now
Is this just for the EU people?
Ya I recall starting wow a few years back and the same thing happening. It sounds like wow may defintly have competition for top dog now.
EU regulars on monday 9:00am CET. Anyhow, they will open more servers on official lauch so lets hope the line do not get longer then :P

Roll Order, zero wait time.

They have to look at this issue seriously.

i too am amazed that 5 hours after launch people want to play.

Yeah, I do not feel bad for you. Roll order.
In an rvr game, you CAN NOT allow one side to outnumber the other by double. Deal with it , rolll an order toon or stop whining.
I wonder if the OP or somebody in the early paid beta test head start could be a little more specific about this.
This "1 hour wait queue," what exactly do you mean:
1. All servers are full on both Order and Destruction Side
2. Most servers are full on both Order and Destruction Side.
3. A few servers are full on both Order and Destruction Side.
4. No server is full on both Order and Destruction side, but some are full on one side or the other.
5. Other (explain)

The RP server that is up and running on eu side looks pretty balanced, i'm guessing from some of the larger polls, this may be a common occurance.
Order being more attractive to rp'ers due to the lore-specifically lore centred around altdorf.
Some of the more popular servers are also where the uber guilds have set up home.
As to war being a contender, I was farming the sunwell isle today for daily quest cash.....even at peak hours its been quiet.
I would imagine things will die down when the pre -wotlk patch is released in a few weeks, and again when the expac is released in november.
