I'm glad that SciFi is getting some respect finally, with two big titles due out. So far, all the others have been pretty lame, IMO.
I'm sure I will play them both, but it will be interesting to see which one is more fun!
Comments
The one that is LEAST a copy of a previous game will be more fun. The one that most copys wow loses.
From what information is available, STO and SGW are going to be very different games, so that's good news as well. STO: a little cartoony in the character models (which I don't personally mind one bit), with attractive and dazzly enough scenery and sets; it had BETTER have some narrative content, or the whole thing is a big nothing (which would fit right in with the history of the IP in gaming). SGW: more of a shooting game, seemingly fast moving; the potential is there for good story content, but the developers haven't given much to point in that direction... but I'll be happy to learn of info that proves me wrong there. If posters have some good info on SGW's plans for character development, please provide links if you can.
Peace
Started to reply to this, then thought the topic needed its own thread. It's here, with links to sources: SGW, story-driven

i dont like scifi game much at all but if if SGW is really good i will play long term i refuse to play STO from what i have seen.
Star Trek probably has a bigger following (especially since a major motion picture is about to be released) but as far as gameplay goes, I think that Stargate Worlds looks far more interesting. The devs seem like they are putting in a lot of effort to make a FUN game, not just a game that will be based on an IP. That's a very important distinction.
Star Trek Online looks horrible. It's going to have to rely on loyal fans to make it, and they'll get bored fast if it isn't a good game.
Stargate Worlds will have a headstart and looks to be a pretty fun title. There's enough different things to make it interesting. I just hope the leveling is top notch. I lose interest in a game after I've level capped.
I love how people make authoritative statements about games that are pre-alpha. It amuses me no end.

In their defense, they did say 'looks to be' fun. Also the head start might mean because the release date for the game is earlier from what I've heard. Otherwise I agree. I see way too many "This game sucks." or "The gameplay is awesome" posts. Since it has an NDA they wouldn't be allowed to say anything like that unless they wanted their alpha-status canned, so I generally ignore those posts for the most part.
There is however a ton of info on the SGW wiki and the SGW forums... so that's probably where most people get their opinions.

On Stargate Worlds? Sure. It 'looks' pretty fun. Of course that's been true of a lot of games, and a few of them have actually been fun. We shall see...
On Startrek Online? Come on, they're so early in development no one knows what they're going to produce.

SGW is on track for a 2009 release. Jack Emmert, when asked about development timeline for STO hinted strongly at 3 years, but that it would be much sooner than expected. So I am thinking 2010 or 2011. Either way, SGW and STO will be so far apart from each other than there's no point comparing. People will be playing SGW for years before STO is even an option.

Sorry, but I'm going to have to go to bat for the poster here. He/she did say that Star Trek Online "looks" horrible. The word "looks" allows him or her to say anything they want. There is definitely enough information out there to say it "looks" one way or the other, despite a new developer. Now, if they said it "will" be horrible, then I'm totally on board that it's jumping the gun.
While I agree that way too many people judge games before they should (plenty are doing it for SGW), everyone is allowed to voice their opinion on how the game looks to be shaping up.
IMO, of course.

Oh, it lets them say what they want. But this is the internet, people always say what they want.
There's exactly zero to go on here short of a few pre-alpha screenshots and developer statements. As we all know, pre-alpha screenshots mean diddly, and developer statements mean far less than diddly, so we have exactly nothing except wishful thinking here.

Going purely based on the IP (which is the only thing we can really do right now) I'll have to say that I think SGW will be the one for me. I've loved Star Trek since I was a kid and will most likely try out STO, but Stargate is my favourite sci-fi show these days and I think the whole team idea will work well for an MMO.
To be honest, I think both games will be fun. From all the info released about SGW, and even the limited amount of info released about STO, they'll be very different games too. They'll also be released pretty far apart as well from the looks of things.
I like Star Trek, and if SGW dissapoints then I will try out STO.
Thats my Words ... look forward .
To me what will make or kill STO will be the space and/or ship play. Cryptic has said STO will use a different combat system then COH and they are looking at games like Mass Effect for inspiration for the combat etc. Cryptic has done a good job with their other games COH/COV and if it is atleast as good it will be a very entertaining game indeed. Oh and by the way SGW is slated for a Q4 release which would put it out at the end of this year, and they are definitely progressing...
Sci-fi would be great MMO if done right & thats my big concern since there really has not been a great MMO released in the last 5 year with mayb e the execption being LOTRO ..
