Where? Is it shout? I never see people talking...with the 1,000 or so players per server, at the least, there should be people chatting....maybe retail will be better but I've never seen a game this dead as far as the community goes. Love the game just hate some things about it, this is one of them. Sometimes, feels like you're all alone in the game. =/

What he said. Use /1 for the most part, not many use /order and /destruction.
The other problem with the /1 general chat channel..its the same color as all the game spam. It blends in very nicely with a very good camouflage factor. They have done well to hide the channel from the masses .The biggest problem with socialising (something Age of Conan ran up against in spades) is the fact its faster and easier to run the content solo. There is very little reason to group except in a few specific areas and thus little reason to socialise.
On the bright side it is very easy to find a group and get into a group or even to start a group. There is a simple group tab upper left corner that will show all groups in your general area with a time estimate as to how long it would take you to get to the group to join them. To join a group all you have to do is click on the group and click join. Unless a group sets toggle anyone can join any group at any time without having to wait for an invite. Very nice feature in my opinion...now if they can just fix chat up a bit to be a bit more functional/Obvious/user friendly/less spammy with system stuff.
Also to the OP. Instead of throwing a hissy fit over something you assume is not in the game..you would probably get a better/faster response by simply asking a straightforward question without the histrionics thrown in. The kind of post you made is designed for only one thing...to start a flame war...not to actually gain information.
I gotta agree with the OP. There is never any chatter in this game. I mean not a little NONE as in I'll go and play and hour and not see one bit of chat in /1 or anything. Yes I changed the color etc. Even when I'm in a group doing PQ people almost never talk. Really bizare after playing games like eq2 and vanguard where people are constantly chattering... Even AoC had constant chatter....
I thought maybe chat was broken and after awhile talking in /1 someone did say something in it. Very strange.... Is /1 zone wide? region wide? 10 feet wide :P

You might find this hard to believe but I'm sure that allot of people failed at RTFM that came with the game, people are busy testing out the game and trying to find which class suits them best.
'Community' is one thing, if /1 degenerates into WoW trade chat many will just keep it off.
Altho I was messing with cultivating this morning... and when I looked over I saw someone had asked if I was 'there' twice.
So I sent them a tell and then they asked me about cultivation lol.. anyway..
Out and about if I see someone in trouble I heal them but I've never had anyone talk that I can see... I come across PQ's and other type activities... there may be a mass of people around but again no conversation.
I haven't even had anyone ask me to group yet... Altho I must also say that despite the population is shows "med or high depending" it really doesn't feel like medium or high...
and it seems like the population isn't capping as much and is dropping rather early.. sure school is starting up and such but that never stopped me from logging in or most people I knew.
I mean there has to be a lot of people around but ya there seems to be little communication and often I feel like I'm one of 3 or 4 people around... except for when I rolled a choas toon for a bit.. then there was a ton of players.. still no talking.
aka I'm used to seeing a lot of commments about the game or people looking to do something... dunno just seems odd.
Got to agree with the OP on this one , the Chat system is very confusing and yes I've tried every single command you can think of there just is'nt any chat , its really fucking bizzare...
While the chat is cumbersome, I don't think it's confusing.
/p for party, /warband for warband, /shout for shout.....I dunno....seem kinda intuitive to me, On Ostmark, we have plenty of chat going on, even if some of it is the guild spam going on.
Until now I did not know general ( tier ) chat existed, so it is /1 or /order or /destruction, cool, so why does Mythic try to hide it?
The random chatter makes the game feel alive, if people dont like it, they can turn it off ...
Really, Mythic should look into this, include the options of /1 and /destruction / order in the nifty little chatbox menu ( where /say /yell /guild /warband are located ). And give ti a seperat color by default.
At least that way I can ask around if someone is interested in a certain public quest or whatever ...
edit : This is atm really the only issue I have with this game, for the rest it is just great !

IS this a fucking joke? Why would they not put this up? Best way to fuck up the community, and the newbies who need help.
What a retarded design choice.
No general chat or world/global chat is the best thing ever they could do for an mmorpg, main city's and outposts/villages/towns should be the hubs of the game where people gather to trade/chat meet people/groups/guilds etc.
There are already plenty of people out in the world to chat while out adventuring , and actualy chat about things in that area , we dont need to hear what everyone on the server is doing at all times .
It makes for a better in game feel when its only people in your area chat, you go to a main city or hub and the chat lights up, then you head out to a far away hard to get to place and the chat is silent , as it should be couse your alone .
i think its amazing how they did the chat, so it confuses the masses and we dont get talk of cuck norris, or if u like turtles, or some other retarded kindergarten talk.

I am not against W.A.R, I just think it is stupid that they hid the chat so well.
I think W.A.R might be my favorite mmo so far, so don't get me wrong!:)
I changed the color and its now im my own made channel, yes the /1 channel is dead atm, but i think that will change later, everyone trying out classes and such, dont think they have time for it right now.. but yea, the channel is dead atm :-) dont think it wont be for long tho... plus someone has to break the ice.. try start a conversation :-)

You can change the color, right click on Tab and select text color, lists all the chat channels and allow you to color them as you wish. Not 100% if I an remember the exact wording for "text color" but it should be pretty obvious after the right click on chat tab.
I'm not in game yet, but since Open Beta community was almost all pre-order people, I'm guessing things haven't changed much.
The game does have the least chat of any MMORPG I've ever played, but I'll also admit that all MMORPGs seem to have seen a huge decline in chat just in the last two years.
If you say "Hi" to someone in this game, they are more likely to run the other way than say anything back. It's like reminding them that the game isn't solo breaks their immersion, or something.
