I'm not interested in PvP either ... there's plenty of games that make better use of fast reflexes than EVE Online. That's why I really like EVE .

I've got one character learning how to explore space for fame and riches, another who's trained wicked trading skills and is rolling in dough without even leaving the station, and another alt that is specialized to mine after missions.

There's almost too much to do ...

Nearly everything in Eve is pvp in some fashion. There's lots to do that doesn't involve shooting other players though.

I dont really like the PvP in Eve. Its more of who can gank who and boost about it making you feel like crap. You can have fun and not get into PvP just watch your back and just run missions but dont tell anyone or you will be told to "go back to WoW carebear". When bored with mission you can try and kill NPCs in low and zero sec space but on the way back you will most likely get ganked at a gate.

I do love exploring space etc in games so I think i'll download the trial and try it.

Thankyou, sorry for the very short first post I was omw to bed lol

There's a quote somewhere and I can't remember it fully so going to paraphraze it; "If you like EVE but you don't like PVP, then perhaps you must conclude that you really don't like EVE afterall".

Trying to evade PVP IS possible, but it makes for very boring gameplay and essentially means you shield yourself from a large part of the game, the playerbase and (imo) the fun. It's ok to be 'scared' at first but I'd urge you to try and accept the PVP with open arms, you'll have more fun that way.

There is also quite an important quote and it goes something like this "Assume makes an ass of both u and me".

At no point in time did I mention I was scared :)

I'm 37 years old i've pvp in games since the early muds about 20 odd years, both as a pker and a pk hunter, I don't "mind" pvp i've just become very very jaded with the whole pvp genre, so I quite enjoy pvp but I won't play a game where i'm forced to pvp :)

Just like I don't mind grouping but I won't play a game i'm forced to group in.

    Perhaps.

    Still my statement stands.

In EvE you arent forced to group, but you are bound to fail if you dont work with others towards common goals. About pvp, well its a bit more .. lets say sophisticated than most mmo`s outhere. More rewarding also.

There's a lot of truth in this thread. Rare for MMORPG.com.

I have made a living in low sec space and specialize in evading the inevitable ambushes. One might find that fun and challenging. I know I do.

Especially when I deal in valuable goods.

All that said, you will probably not play for long unless you make or take friends. It's a cold, cold universe!

Well im back in EVE seems I tried a trial account in 2006 lol,

so i've set sale in my newbie ship and trying to remember wth is everything.

    I may try mining.

I'm not averse to friends and even joining a corp.

My name in game is calranthe

PVP doesn't have to involve blowing each other to pieces, heck you can PVP without even leaving the station. Almost the whole of EVE's economy, everything from the basic ore to high end tech2 and faction modules and ships are running along a long chain of supply/demand/competition. As soon as you step into the game, you are essentially PVPing.

  • calranthecalranthe Member UncommonPosts: 359

hmm I'm finding eve very hard :/

What I mean is I logged on spent hours trying to figure everything out, lost my ship, spent 100k (from 2006)

and everything seemed so hard :/

If there is one problem in Eve, it's that there is too much to do! I remember my first few weeks in-game... holy sheet!

Feel free to get in contact with me in-game for some assistance! And though 100k may seem like alot and the game certainly gets overwhelming, a mentor to guide you goes a long way!

You will get the amount substracted from your wallet, even if it means that you will end up with a negative amount and basically unable to play.

You can, however, sell game time cards through a secure (read: fraud proof) portal within eve to players for isk. Which means, you can't make rl money out of it, so gold farming companies stay out. It's explained here

Now thats a cool way of dealing with people who buy from gold sellers :)

Well i've been playing now for almost a month, I have my own corp with my wife and a couple of friends, the learning curve for EvE is huge but once you get into it, its like nothing else out there.

My new hobby has been refitting all my ships with tech 2 and making them cap stable which was a learning experience in its own right.

As for pvp I haven't really tried it intentionally although i've died 3 times since joining all of them my own fault and a learning experience :)

That is the good thing about EvE I find that if you do get killed if you do get pod'd you can spend time figuring out what you could do better, how you can limit your risk and even fight back.

When I first started I had no idea about armor repairers and or shields and making a ship cap stable etc.

Thank you for all the advice

PS I got my first BB a Gallente Dominix, perfect for me as i'm going drone drone drone, but it will take another month of skills before im happy leaving a station in it lol

Hindsight is 20/20 but from what I've read of your replies, Calranthe, I'd say that Eve is exactly the game for you. It appears that you're willing to take time learning the game, recognise that in almost all cases loss of your ship in PvP is to some degree your own fault (be that autopiloting in high sec to be suicide ganked or simply not scouting an area of low sec before flying in to get shot at) and you learn from your mistakes.

I'm glad you made it through the first month and I hope you continue to find rewarding things to do and see in the game. The possibilities are virtually endless and increasing with time.

    Have fun and fly safe-ish!

    *smiles*

I completely agree, my first death was well I hadto laugh at myself, one week in, had been doing lots of missions, felt kinda invulnerable in my vexor, king of the universe, then I go autopilot *shakes head* through low sec to a mission, ohh whats that flashing red ship, I am amazed I lasted almost a minute :)

Death in EVE is sooo unlike any other game, its an adrenal rush, I mean most games out there you get pvp'd you loose nothing really except abit of pride, i've learnt many lessons since joining including never leave a station in something you can't afford to loose.

And the bonus is my wife (who got jaded with with eq style game long ago) loves EVE too especially as if she is busy or tired her character is still keeping up with mine and learning skills while she is away.

Hope to see you out there :)

As stated... You will build up a callous while playing this game if you explore the PvP element, but will get addicted quicker to the game.

    Currently Playing: AO and FE.

I know its kinda crazy to resurrect such an old thread but wanted to update my progress in eve, a nod to those that advised me to explore eve pvp and that it is different than pvp in any other game.

Well i'm now part of Agony Unleashed, I spend 90% of my time in 0.0 and yesterday I took out my first roams as fc, I could go into hours of description and talk on how it feels and how amazing it is to live and explore in 0.0, still so much to learn.

Since starting this most other games have become less and just don't hold my interest.

To answer my question on the first page is EVE for me ?

    YES :)

Current primary eve char Rho Legate.

    See you all out there

good to hear you're enjoying yourself .... small gang FCing really gives you a whole different outlook on EVE and combat in MMOs.
