Free Trial Version Was Terrible

PhelimReaghPhelimReagh Member UncommonPosts: 682

I recently took a looong time to download the free trial version of DDO, and was psyched to try it out.

However, I could not have been more disappointed. My computer far exceeded the minimum requirements, FiOS connection, but the game was unplayably choppy.

Is this just a problem with the Trial Version? Or is it a very, very laggy game?

It's too late for me, as I'll never play it again (which is sad, as I am a long time Pen and Paper D&D player). But I'm curious if they were just a bit on the incompetent side of things over there.

Sounds like a driver error or something else. I play on crappy ADSL with a decent computer and could play at max settings with decent ping. Don't hold it against the game, you had something else going on.

Sig so that badges don't eat my posts.

    I dunno.

I also tried WoW's free trial and that worked as well as one could expect. No tweaking needed.

Obviously, I ended up going with WoW. Since I could, you know, actually play it. LOL.

I have quite an old computer and have been able to run it nearly on High Setting.  Though there are times when I "lagout" and things see to get out of sync.  But generally its was only a momentary thing, nothing that persisted for far to long.

I would also attribute alot of my latency to using wireless versus aa straight lan line.

Out of interest what was your frame rate, and were you syncing it with the refresh rate? The choppy could actually be tearing (hard to describe the effect, but it is as if your character animation is juddering). There is actually a setting for this problem, should you ever decide to try again.

p.s. Very common if you had an older LCD with a slower response time.

Short answer, client and servers are fine.  Are you positive your computer and/or your connection wasn't on the fritz?

Could you post your machines specs including the resolution your were attempting to the play the gaem at?  I suspect the problem lies therein.

Exceeding the minimum requirements doesn't mean squat if you're trying to play it on maximum settings with only a marginal or assumed advantage above basic system requirements. I believe your machine is the problem and that you need to properly adjust the graphical settings.

WoW should play on just about any machine.  If you're into simplicity and have very low system resources WoW might be the perfect fit.

Your closing statement alludes to possibility that you never intended to play DDO.

    Hey,

Just started playing the game 4 weeks ago. At first i had som issues with lag, mostly character being stuck for no reason. After alot of testing and updating all my drivers (and I mean all possible), i finaly switched router and the problem was gone. Havnt had a single lag / client problem the last 2 weeks.

Suggest u try the game again, I bought the game for about 12$ and that gives u 1 month free play. U usualy able to get this game cheap from gamestores.

My computer exceeds the games requirements but there are more powerful machines out there. Having said that, You need to contact support. Actually tell them what's going on and let them help you.

Because I have absolutely no problems whatsoever and again, my machine does not "far" exceed the requirments.

    dual core 2.4 ghz processor

    Nvidia GeForce 7950gt

    2 gig ram

    no separate sound card

    DSL connection

and no problems. so there must be a driver issue or some other problem.

Yeah I played this game fine with  an older computer with an "onboard" graphics card. Sounds like your having some driver issues or are a troll :)

HI all just wanted to say that I played many mmorpgs and I have noticed even since  I got a wireless g card I have been getting lag in every game I play.

When I'm hard wired with a cat3 network cable I'm fine so you might want to check out the router or wireless card. or just hook it up directly to the modem or router.

Good game, might not recommend it if you arent a fan of the Dungeons and Dragons world but its certainly worth a try. If you are having trouble running it then its something you are doing wrong.

I am actually going to restart my subscription soon. I just canceled mine to WoW :)

Yeah I have to agree, one of DDOs biggest draws for me was the type of people it generally attracted.
