EQ2 will use a locked combat system in which a character or group that attacks or is engaged by a mob, the character or group and the mob may only attack those in the encounter. Outside characters may not aid the engaged characters when an encounter is locked. Players who find themselves in trouble when engaged with a creature too powerful for them to handle may release an encounter by yelling for help, thereby allowing nearby players aid in the attack.
Aggro does not change once the encounter is unlocked. The mob will continue to attack you until it is defeated or until you escape to safety. If you yell for help, the encounter is unlocked. As soon as the encounter is unlocked, whatever de-buff spells were cast on the opponent will be removed. Whoever takes pity on you and decides to rescue you and kill the mob will get no experience or loot for doing so.
So my question is this, with no benefit to the potential hero/heroine - how will you respond to a *Yell for HELP!!*
Comments
I would attempt to heal the injured so they can finish the battle and move on. If the injured to low to heal quick enough, will try and grab aggro, and hope to hell I live. Besides its only a game, why not help, even if I suffer a death no worries.
Seems like you can still power lvl people, just yell for help on ever mob you fight and have a high lvl char PL you.
Lying in bed, looking up at the stars, a single thought passed through my head. Where the fuc|{ is my roof.

No XP. For anyone... Not attacker, not the helper. No matter how hurt the mob was.
**Looking below** And if someone want to inform me why I am corrected by someone? especially someone not knowing how it works...
Only game I wait for right now: Imperator.
Go Mythic!
"This is not a game to be tossed aside lightly.
It should be thrown with great force"
Actually, when you yell for help, or if you run far enough away, you get a message that say the encounter is no longer worth any xp, or loot.
While I understand why they chose to go that route, and it's not to prevent powerleveling, as the devs have stated on more than one occasion, but rather so they can properly balance, and tune encounters.
It still bites when you get a mob to like 2% hp, and get an add and have to run, and lose the xp/loot that by all rights should be yours.
It is a strange setup but I hate to really like it. While doing away with powerleveling, might not have been their goal but its a welcome side effect, just how it greatly prevents kill stealing.
Have to kick myself, but I'd help regardless.
If I could easily kill the mob... no worries.
If it's a group mob I can't kill, or a lot higher than me: I'd at least try to heal them or mez/root the critter - and then I'd be running.
Hmmm. Unless the player was named xxxSTaCKed___BaRBiExxx or somesuch - then I'd pull up a chair, root for the mob, and make comments like "Yeeeouch! That had to hurt!" or maybe "Can I get some cash d00d?"
Well if there's nothing in it for helping I probably would'nt help much unless I know someone in that group or something. Unless I just wanna impress em with my skills. Why risk my precious life bar on strangers! hehe
Damn dunno why this came thru twice.. there no delete option i can find..
OMG ROFLMAO I would have to agree with you!!!! you forgot to say " suxxor to be pwned"
HEHEHE <ahhhh EQ memories>
I would have to say that it depends on many factors....
What level is the mob they are fighting? Can I make a difference?
Can I actually save them?
Is their toon a hot looking female?
Do they have a stupid name or a bad reputation?
If I am in a RP mood, are they on my side?
Am I in a good mood? Maybe I died recently calling for help and got nothing....who knows.
All that being said, I am more likely to help than not. I don't care about the exp/loot reward. Sometimes helping people is reward enough.
Everything born must die. All that is, will come to ruin. This is the essence of Doom. So sayeth the Doomsayer.

I always help in a situation like that, unless the mob is way over my head or something negative would happen to me for helping, like bad faction with guards of my home city or something. Or, if the person is someone I dislike.
And, of course, the stupid name thing. Anyone with a stupid name deserves to die...
Of course, anybody should help. If the only reason you help people is for loot and xp, then you are.. well youre just a bad person.
Given how hard the healer community fought to be allowed to cast our heals on people when they were in trouble, then yes, I would toss a heal on someone if they ran by me, and I could get it cast in time.
Which brings up a slightly off topic issue which drives me batshit as a healer. If you have aggro. Sit still. I cannot heal you when you run around like a chicken with it's head off. And spamming your HEAL!!!11!!! hotkey isn't going to make it cast faster. Since the tank can't, or isn't taunting, I have my own aggro to worry about besides keeping the tank alive, and having to worry about the fool mage that started carpet bombing the mobs right as they were pulled. 7 times out of 10, it's the mage that's the one doing the running in circles, though. the other 3 times it's the tank, who, if they were taunting, wouldn't have so many problems, as I could concentrate on healing them.
Helping out can be rewarding. In L2 when some one helped me out of a jam I'd drop a couple of rez scrolls. Sometimes a big ass stack of spirit shots or equivlent.
I had this pot smoking friend when I was a kid and I bummed a smoke off him. I was pretty thankful and he said, "What goes around comes around" that was like 20 years ago. I know its an old saying but it was the first time I heard it. I lived my life by that ever since.
So the morale is: if you smoke pot make sure you help your friends out. (I think)

Yes i would help,
Its in my nature i guess becasue it could be you at onetime or another. Just becasue there is no benefit in the way of EXP or items or something like that doesnt mean there isnt the benefit of maybe a new friend or someoen that will help you out in some way down the line. Guess it just comes down to what your idea of a benefit is.
MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
I would probably help out. There've been so many times in EQ that I've helped someone out and then a couple months down the road I get in a bind and here comes the person I helped out. When I thank them for their help they usually remind me of the time I saved their butt.
Of course, now that y'all bring up the stupid name thing I think I'd be more inclined to sit back and watch those fools...
I play healing and support classes so i have a helper's mentality i guess.
I would heal the person root or mezz the mob or whatever i was capable of at the time then feel guilty and rezz them if i couldn't save them.

This system is just like FFXI and I always made the mistake of helping and usually died for it, but i'll continue helping (and dieng). I like the system, for the most part it helps with people bitting off more than they can chew, if no one can heal them or help them there less likely to pull somthing they cant handle and then expect help when they mess up if they wont get rewarded for it.
Did that make any sense at all?
