I wanted to write this, because in every new MMO it is becoming more apparent.
When MMO were new, lvl's didn't matter all that much, it was the experience, adventure and fun of meeting other people that mattered. Levels were just a side effect of having fun, not a means to gain power. Lately, a huge part of MMO and players choose power gaming instead.
You know who and what I am talking about. They have all their power hungry guilds ready before release of an MMO. Their sole goal is to be the highest level in the least amout of time. I've played like that. Luckily, not anymore.
But it's not what MMO need to be about. But this happens more and more. This is where people refer to MMO as work.
So how does this matter to you, you ask? Can't you play your own game and not worry about how someone else plays theirs? Well, if I can have a choice what environment I can be in, it would be in one where I feel comfortable around others and where I get treated alike, not like someone inferior against every mob because I choose not to raid or do power gaming, where you get invited to a group based on the person you are, not on the items you carry.

There's a few games like that though the developers always get silly with a mechanic or two or they end up making a mud.
edit: obviously the opposite of what you're complaining about.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
I agree that devs need to create a more 'innovative' and 'kreativ' way of karakter developmint.
I say dey invent a game, with fun stuff for all, and fun for all pvp.
first of all you have to get rid of lvls xp skills items no gear no stats.
All characters stays same.
You play it becouse you can group together find rare places rare items get fame for been nice guy or well known for finding old ruins or been a succefull explore who find artifacts.
This all is not for gaining any character buff just be known as the archeolegist who find old ancient bones.
You can go into world becouse rumours say a beuatifull bird is spotted or a rare animal somewhere and a expedition is made to find this animal.
You can also be a builder of houses or big townhall and be known for that.
You can be the town chief editor for the daily newspaper.
Or story teller
Or a book writer.
Game have nice friendly towns where you can play chess on square in middle of town and been know as the chess champion.
Or play music and be well known for been a keen guitar player or drums.
And so you can see many things could be implemented in such game.
Well you get my drift just a game for fun with out any grinding we know have in most mmo's

In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
Or also be a sportsman well known for winning running contests
Or be a farmer profite food for the town

Seriously though, the only reason "old" mmos "worked" for exploring/chatting for no real change in anything, was because it was new. People weren't even that involved with online communities, so obviously this was interesting to them.
Nowadays running around doing absolutely nothing for no purpose just doesn't fly with gamers. If i wanted to be bored for a hour for 10 seconds of omg this looks cool, then i'd just go watch a softcore porn
What is apparent to me is that almost every MMO today is catering to people who want an MMO to make them feel better just by logging in, which is exactly what you are asking for. What kind of "game" do you want? Let's take the idea to it's logical conclusion. I'd love to know what you want, as your kind of MMO gamer has obviously become the majority these days. Sounds like to me you want a massively multiplayer hug simulator.
I don't need nor desire validation, fulfillment, acceptance or any such emotional claptrap from playing a game. I get all that by winning the game. I want to be tested by games. I want to be really annoyed if I don't succeed in passing a test the game (or another player) puts before me. When I do succeed, I want the game to give me a reward. If other people are envious of those rewards, that is their issue. The 10th commandment...envy etc. etc.
I enjoy a stroll through the park as much as the next guy, but when I want that...I take a stroll through the park. I don't play a video game.
The fact is that if your put more than 1 person in a room together then some of them will be more dominant and some will be more passive.
What you are asking for is a game that will change human nature.
Not possible I'm afraid.
Well, as an older gamer myself, I have a small desire to revisit the games of old. I know it'll never happen, and even though I wish there better community driven games, by no means do I say that I'll never be satisfied until an mmo with potiental of being Second Life comes into being. LOL That'd be stupid and unrealistic.
I, for one, am not looking for the total open world some want...look at Vanguard and where it went. It COULD have succeeded (I guess) if there were more to do and not so many issues from the start. I am open to any kind of mmo, I don't need to explore hours on end with nothing to do but look at the scenery (I'd rather go outside for that).
I still play some of the newer games, AoC (no matter what the nay sayers say ) and have friends playing WoW, and EVE, which I also have subs to. I like games. Period.
All I'm saying is don't place me into a lcategory of 'never satisfied with new games' just because I post my yearning for something like used to play or miss. Life goes on. Maybe I'll never get that feeling again (I did WoW when it came out but got bored at endgame), I just don't think someof you would like me saying "You just like everything new and shiny because you lack experience in life so don't know how to objectively choose something."
That's my rant for today, now to go back and bug trolls..

Some of that sounds very close to what Second Life is.
I guess it's just human nature to an extent. I also get caught up into the competition to get to the top first sometimes. It hasn't happened to me in a long time though. After you have been through it a few times you realize you don't really gain anything by spending all your time playing to get to the top. You just burn youself out in the game and in real life as well.
players aren't responsible for anything other than paying their $14.99. it's the fact that developers are now building games for power gamers/casual types. instead of making a quality game with plenty of content they actually design games with player overturn in mind. they want you to come in and play for six months and go.
that's why they spend more on advertising than development these days. to constantly keep a fresh influx of new accoun ts to replace those on the end of the play cycle.
This hits the heart of the argument.
I would also go on to say that the power gamer/raid mentality is the loudest voice in forums and is generally the 'squeakiest wheel'.
If a developer doesn't cater to power players/guilds then the net outcry will be deafening.
