Insane WAR lag. Please help.

DarkozlDarkozl Member Posts: 8

I can't walk anywhere without getting constant lag. I'll start by posting my specs:

Dell Dimension 8400 (I know. The sucks.)

OS: Windows XP Home

Processor: Pentium 4 3.20 GHz

2 Gigs RAM

ATI Radeon X300 card

Connection: AT&T Broadband DSL (downloads at 200 kb/s for a speed reference)

I know my graphics card is pitiful, but it is supported. I put all the settings to BARE minimum (Fasest framerate) I swear, there are no settings above minimum at all. I also updated my card's driver version and set the card's settings to Best Performance (lowest graphic quality setting)

Now I ran FFXI on here with a half gig RAM and a 20 kb/s download connection and had no problems. This leads me to believe it's either my graphics card or server lag.

I need suggestions, please. I'm at my wits end.

And please note I'm not super tech savvy. I know the basics, and that's all.

I think your graphics card is your weak link in that system. Even ATI says the x300 was not intended for gaming, Its a standard card with decent everyday use, with powersaving in mind.

PS. Dont think running FFXI will mean your system will run WAR. Even though WAR isnt a very demanding game for todays machines FFXI's requirements are much lower. Thats a 5 year old game, people are throwing computers in the trash that will run FFXI.

I have heard that in general there is a fair bunch of people with lag problems. Correct me if I am wrong, but looking on your hardware it seems totally ok for this type of game.

The bottleneck on your system is definitely the GPU. However I wouldn't count on upgrading it to make your troubles go away. It definitely could be server-side as well. If I was going to upgrade anything of the specs you listed it would be the graphics card though.

Its your graphics card.  It really wasn't designed for 3D.  The reason that FFXI works is because its design is based on old tech limited by the PS2.  It only requires an MX440 which is 6 years old.  I don't think the same requirement holds true with modern games.

Thank you, guys. I'm going to look into a graphics card intended for gaming.
