As long as there is a 10 year old kid.......

Ive read these postings about how mmo's will be popular and the the consoles wont be in a few years. The way i see it as long as there are 10 year old kids the console market will always be around.

Consoles are really just toys right?

The pc is not a toy it has more than just one function.

A console has one.

I have an xbox as well and ive never had more fun playing on it.I play mmo's too but some games on xbox are just too fun to ignore. As consoles evolve to having hard drives like the xbox/ps2 you can bet your bottom dollar more mmo's will be developed on these platforms not just the pc.Microsoft and SONY would be idiots not to tackle this market. All they got to do is make a keyboard that plugs into a controller port.

Heres a link looks like Microsoft is embracing this concept:

consoles will never die , they keep becoming more mainstream everyday and growing in popularity.

When i was 12 i never knew mmorpgs exsisted at all let alone a base of players this large , because they are very un-commerical. I remember when i first got UO: blackthrons revenge , i had never heard of any type of game like that before or the genre or that it even exsisted as did many people.

But it is starting to change , mmorpgs are getting a bit more commerical specially with FFXI that got alot of newbs into the whole mmo scene,

Well we've just begun to scratch the surface of MMOs on the console(FFXI) heh. ::::31::

I agree that "nono-MMO" console games wioll always be popular, but MMOs are the future, IMO. But who knows!

well SOE already have tackled this market (MMOs on consoles). There was a little game out a while ago called Everquest Online Adventures for the PS2. Now i think that counts as introducing a MMO to the console market, doesnt it?

You forget the part about how much it sucked, and how little it played like an MMO. I felt a lot like a x999999 Ragnarok Online private server. 5 kills, Oh level! 2 quests, omg another level! Oh, and when I canceled my subscription after 10 days, they continued to bill me for 5 months which I had to file a lawsuit to get them to refund my money. Anyways, ffxi is a lot better example, as it's the same from console to PC. We'll be seeing more integration like that, at least that's what my opinion is.

SOE makes decent games that appeal to nerds. Their customer service is run by jocks who bully nerds. Wonder why SOE sucks so bad...

hey man, i never said EQOA WAS good did I? i just thought everyone knew that it sucked already. It was still an MMORPG, and that was what i was pointing out, i wasnt raising a debate as to wether the game sucked or not. sorry to confuse ya.

the Consol will replace Computers for gaming.
When if coem to games, a computer is horrible at it, millions of setups, cards, settings.. its hell.
where as consols, nobody is "faster" or has more lag. Nobody has better graphics, they only need one setup for textures, they can tweak the entire game to run on one setting, so it will be more efficient.

it is much, much, MUCH! easier to develop a game on a consol than on a Comp, and in the future I think you will see less emphasis on computer games and more on consols

I get what you mean, but what I think he means is that FFXI was the first true mmorpg to show up for the ps2 (remember even older than EQOA there was Phantasy Star Online)

FFXI however showed us that we can have a full fledged PC mmo on a console and get this - PC and console users can play together

What would be great to see but won't ever happen is being able to play a console mmo with a ps2 against Xbox and Cube owners, now that.. would own.

Consoles and computers serve two different functions to gamers anyways.

Computers are scalable to increase in power when games become more powerful. That will almost never happen with a console, that just decides to release a new game console instead of expanding their old ones (Playstation, Playstation 2. I forgot how many nintendos) They allow players to immersively participate in an MMO experience better than any  console.

However, consoles also have their perks too. Someone already mentioned that nobody will ever be faster than anyone else that plays the game (lag pending) Since everyone has the same hardware (I've yet to hear of a story of someone upgrading their x-box) Also, consoles allow players to combat each other on split screen for an amazingly fun and humorous deathmatch in various games! Halo 4-way can be terribly amusing (or terribly cheap depending on how good your friends are at it :P) A computer hasn't had a split screen game since... ooh... I dont think I've ever seen one.

Consoles (like x-box) also try to cater particularly for FPS (Halo, Splinter Cell, etc.) where their controllers really  do excel over the key hunting that a normal computer would have. And thus kids find it easier to use a console over a computer as well.

Personally, I wont buy a console. I think they're more primitive than a computer and it seems every time your beginning to enjoy your console, a new console comes out and they only make games for that. Capitalism at it's finest. But I know other people who think the exact opposite. I suppose it comes down to what you like to do for fun.

I use my PS2 to watch dvds a lot. Its not all just for games anymore, and with the direction things are going, Nintendo will be the only console to stay "just for games".

I mean they already allow online gaming capabilities, and you can plug in a USB mouse/keyboard... would it be so hard to add a ps2 internet browser? Or even go further with an actual windows/mac style platform?

To the above poster, i don't think a controller is ever as good as a mouse when it comes to precise aiming; i'd have to say PC FPS players have the edge. Also i've enjoyed my PS2 for many years now and PS3 is not anywhere near release.... and the PS2 is backwards compatable, so i still play some PS1 games.

personally i think rpg's and rts's suck on consoles.  i'd much rather play Starcraft, RoN, Warcraft3, etc. on a PC.  I'd also much rather play BG, NWN, and every mmorpg on a PC.  I cant stand the Final Fantasy style rpg's that come out on consoles, theyre all cutesy anime for girls, linear for the most part, and i REALLY hate when rpg's jump to a separate combat screens like on most console rpgs.  God, Xenosaga sucked but it got so much hype :p

I have an XBox, my brother has a PS2.  I almost never play it, i use it mainly for sports games and i think thats what its great for since joysticks are good for action but not indepth games iwth alot of commands like rpg's/rts's.  Also i prefer my Xbox for shooters but i'm not a big fan of shooters, but get the mood every once in awhile.

So basically i think they both have their pros and cons.  Since i'm more into rpg's and rts's i'd take my PC over my Xbox if i had to choose.  Besides i like having my TV on while i'm on my pc.

OMG yes i tottally agree. They give you a stupid little transaction screen and then you ahve to wait 5 more seconds looking at your characters as they sit there. If all games would just let you fight without stupid combat screens. And yes i bought Xenosaga a while back and hated it. The game just sucked i dont know what made it bad it just did.

Man, FF is different from PC rpgs.

Insulting the FF games is as stupid as insulting gaming.

Im sure you didnt finish FF7 or FF9 image

If you like PC RPGs, then X-Box is your best bet. It has SW:KoTOR, Morrowind, Fable and more to come...

BTW yes Fable is console-only, it has PC RPG style.

Geez, how nice another Console vs PC debate.

    Well you all ever stop?

It is an arguement that all winds up to be who prefers what.

This arguement is as old as the first Play Station. Hmm, really I think it can go back to even the first Ninetendo.

Both aren't going anywhere and trying to feel that your money for your console was worth it or the last PC you bought was worth it is all just a smokescreen of your own doubt it this topic.

ok, maybe too deep for most however.

Both offer something to the gaming community that the other isn't able to do. Otherwise one would have been dropped years ago.

Consoles provide easy gameplay with no configuration at all and uses a default handheld interface so all games are easy to learn. Nothing different in the system so games can be developed with quicker dev methods and pretty much similar to the other, Otherwords copycat games! Console machines are the headache free gaming at a cost that even a person on welfare can afford.

Oh the other hand, you have PC's. A very diverse system with many different configurations that make the gaming industry able to produce outside of the limitations of the console systems. They can produce games that allow players to modify, edit and alter the way the game plays. Or even give more life to a game to make it replayable over and over. Most FPS games come with editors so players are able to make the map of their dreams. So to say that FPS games are better on the console machines is a farce. There are more played FPS games on the PC than there ever was for all consoles added together. Infact the most popular FPS games only come out on the PC. Doom3, Half-Life2 and I could go on. On another genre of RPG, well still RPG is best on the PC. Now even though some have come out on the console and a few not being on the PC well that sort of tells you why. I won't go there. But I will say that you don't see all the MMO devs running to put out a console version of their product. Another is NwN which I am sure I don't have to explain that one either. However some that could be, if you look at most RPG games you will notice the easier played ones are on consoles, while the ones that have more depth are only on the PC. Infact I don't think Fable would be really popular on the PC and also if you notice it isn't even made in the US. That alone tells you why!

Yet, as I can recall someone here saying something about Morrowind being on the Xbox. Well, let me tell you one thing here. First off I own a PC and I also own a Xbox for my son. I bought Morrowind when it came out. My son liked it so I got him the Xbox version. Now first I would like to mention. The Xbox or any other console. You can't change the resolution. (there is the simple and easy I am talking about). So, you will only get so much quality. Typically we have a 27" TV my son uses for the Xbox which I am sure that the 27" is sort of typical of what most out there have. Especially if they use the console because of cost reasons. Anyway, I got on my computer and had to drop my res to 800x600 to make it the same porportion in size. Then I even had to drop my AA settings to x2 and to add to that I have to push my slider bar for detail down about half way and even most the view distance (fog) all the way in. Well, then it was equivalant to the Xbox version. If you don't believe me try it yourself!  As they say, you get what you pay for. However it doesn't end there. My son can only play the game. However I am able to add new land and content to the world and then go and share it on the net for others to check it out. Now, yes being morrowind it sucks that it isn't MP, however NWN and TES should have spoke to each other, then we would have had an awesome game. Now, it doesn't end there either. When Tribunal came out as well as Bloodmoon, all I had to do was buy them to add to the main. However, with the console I had to go buy Morrowind GOTY so my son would have all of the new content and etc..

Now, don't get me wrong... The console machine is a cool thing. But just because you enjoy it a lot don't go and bash the PC games and gamers. It is like saying that the 30 30 Bolt action rifle rules and the semi-auto 30-6 sucks. Both can do some major damage but they both operate differntly.

So, instead of trying to say the PC isn't going anywhere and that consoles are the future is not only very ignorant but highly assinine.

If anything will come to happen is both will merge together in a VERY awesome system that can not only play games without the bull crap of odd configs, but will have the ability to surf the net, edit text files, edit 2d and 3d tiles, check/send email, play top end games and edit them, plus everything a PC does and more, maybe even make you coffee (by voice command) while you are on a quest with friends in EQ4Ever or whatever.

Finally, anyone that says PC's are better than Consoles or Consoles are better than PC's remind me of a bunch of kids standing around saying my dad can kick your dads ass. To me that person or persons need to be kicked in the nuts. Or Botch slapped for the females. image

I rest my case. Pass it on. Sheessssss, will it ever end. I can see it now. 2 old men sitting in a rocking chair. One says. I remember back in the days when I use to play EQ2 and a few friends of mine ventured on some really cool quests. The other old man says, What, what, are your crazy, EQ2 sucks, now back in the day I remember good ol' WoW. Boy oh boy I can recall days when we held off the horde from taking over a town for over 3 days without any sleep.

    Ok, nuff said.

Consoles seem to be more economically functional. And the way they're going, soon you'll have a keyboard & mouse (or have they already added that?) and fully functional internet with download capabilities, etc.

I never intended this to be a console vs pc debate. All im saying is as long as there is a market for it(10 year old kids)there will be console games.
Wether or not one is better over the other is not a topic. Its an old topic anyway and everyone has their own opinion.
Fact of the matter is mmo's are notorious time sinks. They always will be and it will never change.

I for one would NEVER let my 10 year old kid play an mmo.

Like my mom and dad did to me ill do to my kid:Its summertime you need to go outside and play with your friends and i dont want to see you until dinnertime unless you have a cut or broken bone!!!

Ill say this:Mmo's require a huge dedication of time at upper levels. This goes beyond the argument of console vs pc.Most quests require you to go somewhere to start ,continue, or finish it.

Sometimes all i want to do is PLAY a game.A console enables me to just play.

The next generation of consoles will be closer to a pc than you think. It is inevitable. As games evolve so will consoles and development of most mmo's.To think that this will not happen is just silly. If you create a game for one platform it wont require "upgrades"whatsoever.

I kind of envision it to be more akin to the alienware laptops in that you can replace and upgrade the videocards and memory or processor.

    no...no really

but what can I do...but go out and buy one to play with them

See how consoles are evolving already then?Online play was not possible on the ps1.Now we have it as a normal function and it will be on every console developed in the future.

Online play is NOT just for the personal computer anymore.

in my mind, the only games a pc is better at is FPS and RTS.
without a mouse, those games are hell. for me atleast

RPG's are 10 times better on consols, the controllers allow you to do so much more, with a better interface, see Fable.

Consols will replaces computers for gaming, the modding might be done with a computer, and work will still be done on a computer. But computers are always changing, consols change ever 2-3 years.

It has already been said many times by almost every developer the best thing that could ever happen for videogames, was if you could stop advancing technology for a few years.

Console gaming is evolving get used to it.

Xbox and ps2 both play dvd's and have online play available.Im not saying its better by any means.Im just saying it is evolving and getting better and better.

As far as upgrading goes....well i bought my pc 2 years ago and have not done ANY upgrades at all.I got EXACTLY what i wanted.

Because consoles are MUCH cheaper.  Not to mention their FOR games exclusively, like Atari was, and theyre more practical for the average gamer(non hardcore) or the little kid(parents often dont want their kids messing w/ their pc's).  Or even someone who travels alot, unless they have the money to afford a laptop.

Fables more a action rpg, try playing BG(not the action console one), NWN's, or some other more in depth rpg that isnt totally action based on a console, just wont work right.  IT'd be like Morrowind, which imo sucked BAD on console.

What developer said that btw?  I could've sworn developers would rather have the extra room to put other stuff in or not be limited to how much they can put in.  I could've sworn i read a article by someone who made a game for PS2, and then made one for Xbox, where they talked about how much easier it is to have the 'extra room' XBox gives over PS2.  I'd only assume the PC takes that even further and gives them alot more leighwey.
