New player: Should I get it?

Hey there!  I've been thinking about getting this game for a long time.  But I've heard just as many cons as there are pros.  And, of course, it's old, meaning everyone's probably the level cap now, so I'm wondering if I'll really fit in at all even if I'm new.  I don't have any rl friends playing this, partly because of things like not having a good PC or and Xbox 360, or just flat out thinking it's boring.

Whatchu think?

FFXI is a big commitment.. moreso than most other MMOs I would say. The world is amazingly vast and filled with content, most of which will take a long time to see. The community is excellent however, at least on the servers I used to play, so making friends is not a problem if you're sociable. If you're willing to devote a significant amount of time, then I'd say go for it.

Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV

My opinion is that this was the best MMO when it came out in the US... but as you said everyone is at the lvl cap or close to it... by now that it will be difficult to find parties ect which are a big part of this game. I loved FFXI but now all the starting areas are completely deserted for the most part... so I dont think you would find as fun. Plus the control are strange compared todays standards. you moved with the arrow keys instead of the WASD which I don't *think* there is a way to change that.

That said people sometimes change jobs to something new so you might a few people depending on the server. The community was the best of any MMO hands down... but imo the closest thing to FFXI in my opinion (as far as community and feel of the world) would be Lord of the Rings Online... so I'd probably try that. :)

There are new people starting all the time on my server Kujata. It's never too late. With Level Sync, the starter areas and leveling areas are all full pretty much like they used to be. Level Sync lets anyone that's a higher level than you sync down to your level and you can party together if you're level 10 or higher.

The controls. You can change to a WASD format in the game or you can configure a controller in the FFXI config if you'd like to use a controller. It's made more for that. Anyway, if you choose to come to my server, let me know. If you choose to play, have fun. Don't expect it to be like WoW or anything like that.

Great game, I played it for years.  I judge all new MMO's i play to ffxi and no so far have come close to it. I left because it was getting kind of hard to get in xp parties with low level jobs, and for the same reason other people leave, after years (around 4) and my play time was astronomically high, it just got old to me. FFXI community is unmatched in any MMO. For the most part its not really a casuall gamers mmo.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
    Now Playing: N/A
    Worst MMO: FFXIV
    Favorite MMO: FFXI

Alright, thanks for the replies.  I don't expect anything Final Fantasy related to be anything but challenging. XD

But thank you Satimasu.  I'll probably join your server if those are the circumstances. =D

@ipod80GB - Level Sync is already here

@natuxatu - It's in the configuration part of the menu. It's called "Compact Keyboard" or perhaps just "Compact"

@ Dithrain - FFXI is a challenge.  I would not reccomend this game if you want something that is casual in nature.  This game requires hours and hours to level, complete missions, complete quests, etc so unless you have the time to dedicate i would not reccomend this game.  I've seen so many people get this game and walk away disappointed because they lacked the drive, dedication, and time to put into the game.  It's a lot easier to get experience points parties now too.  Bismarck has seen a slew of new players lately and with Level Sync now you can pretty much find whatever is looking for party and invite them.  I do reccomend this game now.  Been playing for years and the good thing about this is, those who have played for years still have jobs to level.  One character can level all jobs and most people level at minimum 2-3 jobs to 75 so you can still find parties easily.

However, the best times for lower levels are probably going to be your weekend times as that is when the most people are on.  After you get past, i'd say 30, you can find more parties regularly as you can have a bit more flexibility on where you can go.  Good luck, if you have questions, please post, and if you come to Bismarck, look me up.  Shazamalicious is me. (Take care)

    EVE - Sharvala
    FFXI - Shazamalicious
Guild Wars - Xavier Lucifer & Charlize the Necro

Thank you for your input, Suplyndmnd.  I just have one more question, on terms of being "hardcore" enough. =)

How much would be considered a good daily play time?  I have about 3 hours of play time available each day.  Would that be enough?

    Thanks man.

I'd venture around 4 - 6 hours to be honest. You can hop in an out for an hour here and there, but because of the party system, it is difficult to justify. Think about this: it takes you 10 minutes of /inv (/lfp for you non-ffxiers) you get a party invite and as the party is built you sit for about 5 minutes while people get thier equipment and buy food and such. Now you need to get to your party location that might take another 10 minutes to get out there. Now you have used up about 25 minutes of your hour you had to play.

So you get started and party for a little bit and it is time to go. Now you have to look for a replacment. You SHOULD look for a replacement it is extremely rude in this game to leave a party without having someone to take over for you. As you can see it does take a while for a party to get going so leaving your party to find your replacement hurts them and cuts into their play time. After a while you get the reputation of not getting a rep and people won't want to party with you. I digress. Potentially their might not be anyone /inv that fits your role in the party so you have to wait to see if anyone pops and then hope they respond or don't ditch you half way to the party. So assume that is another 15 minutes there. So basically you are only concentrating on your party for 20 minutes of your hour. Better if you had more time.

There are some events such as Dynamis that can take 4 hours if you have a really good group. Usually you will show up early so the leaders can organize and get a gameplan based on the jobs that are available to them so you can be looking at 4-5 hours right there.

As far as the hardcore aspect goes. This game ... the people are freaks of nature. I know quite a few peopel who do not log out of the game or who sleep for 2-3 hours a day and are playing for 21-22 hours. If you have a job, life, family, responsibilities ... do not come to Asura and expect endgame. I don't know if other servers are better or worse for it, but Asura is like New York ... it never sleeps. And it isn't in a good way like there is a fluxuation of NA going from 05:00 - 19:00 GMT, EU going from 12:00 - 02:00 GMT, JP going from 17:00 - 07:00 GMT ... it is like 26 year old in Idaho who lives in his mother's basement that has no job and only sleeps between 9 and 11 AM and plays FFXI the rest of the time. This is the stark contrast of me who is 26 year old with the 9 - 5 job with bills and rent, volunteers time as a local community theater, and attempts to get out there and get laid at venues that are not anime conventions. All the while playing this game. Probably I should not be playing and it is only a matter of time before it will happen, but I have just done so much in this

In short ... you can do some with 3 hours a day, but most endgame people (at least the ones I know) would call that casual and question your dedication to the supreme leader -- themselves. If you find the right group of people you can do a lot with it and have a lot of fun, if you don't you will be dropping the game in a few weeks. If i could suggest, find some out of game friends to play this with. People treat your different when they reailze there is a person on the other end.

Since they aren't in endgame yet, I don't think they'll have to worry about it right now.

3 hours should be enough time to play. Especially starting out. Endgame, it depends on how much time you want to invest. Other than that, you're playtime is fine.

Well, from someone who hasn't always been the "party player" playing games where you solo most of it. (Yes, I'll admit it, WoW.)  But I have played Flyff.  Probably the most party dependant game I've seen.  But wouldn't MORE population be BETTER for a party based game?

Anyway, I could get in 3 hours a day during the week, and however much I want on the weekends.  I figure that would be decent for starting out. =)
