Have Mmorpg's ever got in the way of your "real life"?

panachepanache Member UncommonPosts: 397

Reading some of the posts of couples who play mmorpg's together, i was wondering if anyone has ever encountered the darker sides to mmorpg gaming? I have seen mmorpgs break up what i considered happy marriages and relationships.

For me i admit to getting a little too close to female people i have met ingame...thanks to one guy i finally reliased my errors. (thanks to his typical northern wit, flat cap and pigeons).

Real Life is a drag.  Bring on the games.

I have known players who quite school, quit work, quit their girlfriends because life was interfering with thier game life. Some would do 1, or a combination of the above 3 items

I think the main reason there has not been a game as good as the original UO was because it was so good it was ruining peoples real lives.

I think if someone made a game as good as the original UO, but in 3D, it would destroy many upon many real lives. I mean look at how much people play all the crappy mmorpg's online right now, just image if a good mmorpg was made

I don't think they interfere so much as they take the place of....

The fact is that the game is more interesting than real life. Its all the adventure without the risk. If a really good game came out I could see spending the majority of my existence playing it.

When AO came out I played it so much that I rarely ever saw the outside world. Eventually though its charm wore off and I reverted to my natural state.

I do miss the rush though.

Would sleep be considered part of "real life"? If it is, then yes. But the real test will when WoW hits retail. During the stress test, I passed up on lots of sleep. I cannot say I missed any sleep because WoW was much more important at the time.

Anyway, I'll get plenty of sleep when I'm dead.

I do not believe that any game will overrun my "real" life.

Sadly enough Everquest did take over my life.. Well in away.. I was still in school kept my job and my girl.. But i did much much less of them.. But for the girl haha. Well It came to the point where i was a "hardcore" gamer.. More then 8 hours a day of EQ can kill anybodys mind, hoping WoW doesn't do that too me same with EQ2 because i want to try them both out

Yea, while playing AC2 I used to spend hours upon hours in-game and neglect RL, which caused some problems in the end... Hence I had to cancel it, and probably won't play any of the upcoming MMOs either, as I tend to get to engrossed in it... although I'm tempted to try WoW ;)

When i was playing everquest i was playing up to 3 hours a day, almost EVERY day! It just got to the stage where my real life was suffering and I just gave it up.

No more sig pic. Toooooooo big for its boots.

It used to to take up a good portion of my day.

But ive got an incredible amount of will power.I quit smoking cigarettes after 15 years a pack a day, stopped drinking beer, and with no support groups etc etc.

It is just a matter of real life being more important than virtual. Now i only play the mmo of the moment when free time allows. It is simply a huge waste of time to play more than 2 hours as far as im concerned.I know a guy who plays EQ.The other day i asked him how long a quest he mentioned was going to take.

He estimated 6 hours.Im sorry but as a person gets older more and more real life responsibilities take precedent.

    Want to ENJOY an mmo?

Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.

    Just play the damn game:)

Only when I let them, but originally i encouraged myself to become addicted to these games to get away from my real life due to other problems

My life was MMORPGs. Now that I've quit playing MMORPGs, I have no life. image aside from college & boredom... *shudder* *twitches convulsively*

Yep, Sadly EQ had controlled my life for about 3 years. My grades dropped, i dropped my girlfriend, and I never did anything. The game was my life basically. Not that it is a bad thing to be able to play as much as i did.....

Real life has gotten in the way of my MMORPGs, for sure...

But that wasn't your question. My marriage hit some rough spots over things that happened in games, but we had more fun than fights, once we really started playing together. Some couples find they have more peace if they go their separate ways in game, but that wasn't us.

My advice? Never join a guild that your beloved's guild sees as a rival or an enemy. Nothing is worse than sleeping with a spy. ;)

Busted back to one star... Damned real life, getting in the way of my mmorpg.com, too.

MMORPG's sometimes get in the way of my school work. Hmm... Level my character to 30 with a bunch of friends? Or type up an english essay.... (I usually pick the first one image) but MMO's never get in the way of my life OUTSIDE of school (which actually only amounts up to several hours, grrs lousy school image).

I play games with my lovely wife. Games will never get in the way of RL!! We have our gaming time and the rest is family time. I don't understand how people let a game take over their life. Maybe if the spouse/girlfriend is not a gamer it could happen. If you can keep priorities straight, you shouldn't have any problems. A game has yet to be designed that I would choose over a marriage/relationship.

Seems to me that the most important thing is be able to balance mmorpg timing with RL. I am proud to say that I have managed bothimageimage

But marriage does reduce my mmorpg gaming by a few hours...image

My husband spends a fair amount of time online himself so i don't feel bad playing MMORPGs. It keeps me from being bored in awful chat rooms or yahoo. I wish i could convince my husband to play MMORPGs with me, but alas he does not want to.  As far as MMORPGs getting in the way of real life, I doubt they will too much, although my husband did complain some when I was playing EQ, or shadowbane and would tell him " I'll quit in a little while, I"m in a really good group right now" image I spend about 2 hours a night on the computer anyway. MMORPGs will just cut my forum time back a ton.image

    Only 2 hours a night?.....

    Sheesh what a lightweight.

I love those drop down menus they have in the beta signups. The ones that say how much do you play MMORPGs? It always says like 10 -20 hours a week up to like 30 -40 and Im always thinking how come they dont have a higher number to choose lol.

When I started playing SWG I was logging over 200 hours a month. I would say MMOrpgs tend to interfere a bit with my real life

Well I don't know that I'll only spend 2 hours a night on it ;) but that's probably an average of what I spend online everynight now with out an MMORPG to play. oh and that doesn't include time during the day when I have a day off.... and some nights it runs closer to 4 hours.... just depends basicaly all the time normal people spend watching tv.... I stay online. image I can't wait to have a good game to play again. image
