Aventurine to Launch New Game on GNi's Leading Multiplayer Game Hosting Platform
GNi Selected for Convenience and Scalability
SAN JOSE, Calif., Sep 16, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Aventurine SA, a developer located in Athens, Greece has selected GNi, a leader in infrastructure-as-a-service, to host their groundbreaking game, Darkfall Online, which is scheduled for release later this year.
"True to our game development philosophy, we demand uncompromising quality for Darkfall's hosting needs. We want it all: world class service, hardware, and bandwidth, while offering competitive pricing and terms flexibility. We also demand game industry knowledge and experience, and, more importantly a shared vision for our game and a long-term relationship. We've found all of this in GNi. We're very impressed with their professionalism and their commitment to the success of Darkfall and Aventurine. We feel very confident we made the right choice and are pleased to be working with them in bringing Darkfall to our customers," said Jade Mehdawi, CEO of Aventurine SA.
"Aventurine is a creative, energetic, quality organization and we are excited to have Darkfall Online running on our platform. The game looks great, offers compelling new experiences and freedom players don't often see with some of the most widely played MMOs. Darkfall offers a rich variety of experiences that will appeal to MMO veterans and new players alike," said Derek Wise, founder and CTO of GNi, Inc.
Darkfall Online Offers Highly Immersive Experience
Darkfall Online is a massive multiplayer online (MMO) fantasy role-playing game featuring a fun, fast-paced, real-time combat system, massive battles, clan warfare and empire building. Darkfall combines role-playing, action, and strategic gameplay. Darkfall has been designed to create intensely realistic and highly immersive combat and a challenging, realistic environment for a more immersive experience. With full collision detection battle lines really matter and well-aimed spell blasts will send opponents flying. Darkfall's goal is to provide players with a fun and challenging experience through a seamless and zoneless, non-instanced, "sandbox" game world.

web server provider, not publisher
atleast they are moving in the right direction
Still good news nonethless
Knights who say Ni website!
i wonder how many people have tried to give tasos a ring since that was first posted, lol
Sad. It was bad enough when distributer was publisher, but now internet host is publisher. How many publishers do they need? (Clue: IF they had a publisher, the publisher would get a distributer and a host for Adventurine, as well as act as a billing agent, do customer support, and pretty much everything else except development.)
well...GNi isn't serving as a publisher. They are merely hosting a server. But I do agree with your second half of your statement.
Its a VERY bad idea. If the servers crash, the devs cannot go right into the servers and reset them...because they dont own them nor have access to them directly. A lot of people are excited that they have someone to host their servers but it really isnt a good idea.
Also, I agree with the publisher issue. The current Greek publisher has had VERY limited experience in terms of distrubution...only Greek translated VHS and DVDs. In addition the publisher has had zero gaming distribution experience. While they may have experience in distributing in Greece, they have zero experience in Technical Issues.
We'll see what happens but it isn't exactly a common road for a game developer to have a VHS/DVD distributor as their publisher.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
Does any company host their own servers? Blizzard and Sony use AT&T for hosting.
If outsourced server hosting works for them then why not DF?
Also I do not agree that the Greek distributor is inexperienced as they handle distribution, and I would presume translation, in Greece for some major Hollywood studio's.
There is no discernable difference between movie distribution and games distribution, in most retail outlets where games are on display there are movies right next to them in identical packaging.
What about server remote administration ?
It is possible ...
If AVE can deliver any hollywood dream since 1962 they sure should be able to ship the DarkFall CD..

$OE - eternal enemy of online gaming
-We finally WON !!!! 2011 $OE accepted that they have been fired 2005 by the playerbase and closed down ridiculous NGE !!
"There was suppression of speech and all kinds of things between disturbing and fascistic." Raph Koster (parted $OE)
for such a small company its better to oursource the hosting.
about the publisher, hmm i never understood whats the big deal with publishers.
Last 5 years i've bought all my software from online download services, which I and most people I know prefer.
Why dont Aventurine just sell it via steam + direct2drive or something.

I don't agree with this at all. The Greek Publisher may not have published any games yet but there are experienced at what they do which is publishing. GNi is very experienced with server technology and for what Aventurine is looking for server wise GNi is a great choice.
What this does is allow Aventurine to retain full control over DarkFall which is why they would not go with any of the big name publishers. It also gives them quality server care with minimal involvement on that end. This is not a bad thing.

Bottom line is they went to proffesional companies. These companies are very good at what they do. They didn't go to Wal-Mart Publishers and have McDonalds host there servers.
I'm just happy that they are finally moving forward with getting things in line to actually launch the game. Of course there are downsides to any publishing/hosting solution that they pick, but this is hardly an aweful choice (though the greek publisher might be...).
i been waitin to hear some news on this for US distribution seemed wierd when they didnt have one , still dont technically but this shows they r moving faster now,
on the whole publisher thing, sometimes company's have to have different publishers for different parts of the world or in different regions pending what they are capable of, and sometimes this even delays games in other parts of the world but thats a known logic but just incase someone didnt know. lol
"Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die."
The Greek Publisher they went with is going to publish the game in like 50 countries or something like that. We have all been thinking the US will be one of them.
