Large Scale Battles

trapdoortrapdoor Member CommonPosts: 19

What current MMO's have large scale battles?

Are they any good?

What makes them good (or bad)?
What could make them better?

I'm looking at gameplay. Not technical issues like Lag and such.
The bigger the scale, the better.

DAoC has large scale battles. Dark and Light will have large scale battles. In DAoC the big battles I fought in were the most memorable experiences ever in an mmrpg. Three armies of 50+ each on a field fighting each other, or a 100 man army sieging your castle while all you have is 8 people to defend the walls with, it just doesnt get better than that.

Lineage II has Castle Sieges, which I haven't seen yet, but I hear they are large scale and a lot of fun.

Saga of Ryzom has large scale battles, sometimes initiated by NPCs or monsters on player villages, where the players must defend their home.

Dark Age of Camelot, with it's improved RvR with NewFrontiers, has some great large scale battles and Castle Sieges.

Shadowbane has large-scale battles as well if you are in a sizeable guild.

EvE has large scale battles. Ive seen 80-100 ships going at it, a battle between two major alliances. There are almost constant battles being fought, but usualy just teams of 10-20 against other teams of 10-20 in one of 15-20 hotspots in the EvE universe. When alot of ships get to fighting it really does look like a star wars or star trek fight with all types of ship sizes and types flying about, explosions going off, missles and lasers streaking through space, reinforcments warping in and crippled ships warping out before being finished off.  Too much fun.  There are plenty of movies captured from battles on the eve-online.com website.

Having played most of the games that have been previously listed lemme give you an idea of the pros and cons of each game and their battles.

DAoC: I'd say this is your best bet...it does not take long for you to be able to join the battle and there are almost always at least 1 good fight a day. However, before the frontiers expansion came out you would have hours of running around not seeing anyone which could get tedious. Don't know if this was helped by the expansion or not.

Shadowbane: This is a great game for huge battles. Again another quick game to be able to join and this one has a bit more strategy to it. The battles and sieges definately have more substance since your attacking a player built city instead of a pre-built border fort. The main problems are you have to deal with the Shadowbane universe which is harsh and poorly drawn. :P Meaning bad graphics and if your not a thief you have to really protect your backpack.

Eve Online: Find a good corp or else all you'll see are tag matches between a few stray ships. This is one side hiding in a station while the other side waiting outside. A lot of corp seem to like doing this. ::::26:: Otherwise the battles can be VERY strategic and rewarding with a Star Wars/Star Trek feel to them.

Lineage II: Oh boy...what a game...prepare to spend months of grinding just to be able to get to a point where you won't get 1 hitted by all the hardcore players. If your a serious grinder (leveler) or a VERY serious PVPer and really want those castle sieges to take place than this game is for you. If you are you will need to find a guild that will be taking part in castle sieges. As there are a limited number of castles that can be taken there are only so many guilds online that will be involved in the huge castle sieges. Otherwise watching your clan leader fly in to rescue you and your besieged castle on a dragon might be fun if your into that kinda thing.

Also in daoc you forgot to mention dieing in 4 seconds and usually sitting around doing nothing since people are afraid too die to win. And i could say other stuff but meh

That all depends on the player. When I was new to RvR and was in a major battle I did die quickly but once I learned how to effectively use my characters I could easily last long. In any game that has PvP until you learn how to effectively fight you won't last long.
