Disappointing Experience

in Asheron's Call 2 : Fallen Kings

Has anyone else had problems getting into this game? I downloaded the trial, created my character, and quickly ran into problems. My biggest problem is trying to minimize the client so I can actually look at instructions while playing. I tried asking for help in-game, but I couldn't get anyone's attention to help a poor noob. I also asked (in two different worlds, mind you) what the different abbreviations meant (like pst) but again, only silence.

Am I missing a vital piece of instruction as to how to chat? I tried configuring my chat channels but I couldn't get anything other than Trade and General. And without being able to tab between client and internet, and without being able to get onto some sort of in-game help channel, and without being able to attract other people's attention to answer basic questions (like where the heck are the coordinates on the surveying maps that were referenced on the website's instructions? and where does one go to get a patron? etc) I'm afraid this game is no good to me. I'm hoping I just missed something simple, but the more I play around with it the less convinced I am of that.

Another question: What other resources are available for this game other than what is on the official website? I guess I've been spoiled by Eve Online, but I wanted to find decent forums dedicated to different topics, databases with items, creatures, skill advancement charts, etc. Thus far I am pretty disappointed, particularly seeing how some people criticize Eve Online for lack of community development and resources for new players to get into the game. I'm hoping that someone here will be able to point to a comprehensive resource, and tell me how to access it while logged on.

    Run at a resolution somewhat lower than your desktop, and run in window (non FullScreen) mode.

    Lots of sites with AC2 info, some are:

    Hmm unfortunately my desktop is running at minimum resolution for the game. I was hoping for a windowed mode like what I have on Eve, with a minimize button on it.

    Un check the "Run in FullScreen" on the dialog just before entering play.

    Chat Channels
    You can direct your chat to a number of different audiences using the different chat channels. In order to send a message on a specific channel, type type /[channel command] message. For example, /cr Has anyone in the area seen Thorsten Cragstone?

    /cg General Channel Global chat, can be heard by all players
    /cr Regional Channel Region chat, can be heard by all players in your general vicinity (ex: Esper Region, Ariaki Region)
    /ct Trade Channel Trade chat, can be heard by all players
    /a Allegiance Channel If you are a member of an Allegiance, can be heard by all other members of the same allegiance
    /f Fellowship Channel If you are a member of a fellowship, can be heard by all other members of the same fellowship
    /ck Kingdom Channel If you are a member of a Kingdom, can be heard by all other members of the same Kingdom
    /tell [player name], Private Channel Direct chat, can be heard only by the individual named (player name must be followed by a comma, then the message) /tell Alonna, Can you help me?
    /reply Private Channel Typing /reply will send a message to the last person to send you a direct /tell. Note: If a third player sends you a direct /tell before you have completed your /reply, the reply will go to the most recent player (a “mistell”).
    There are 4 chat windows available that can be customized to display different channels. To customize your chat windows, click the Options Panel (F3) and then the “Chat” tab. You can select which chat window each chat type is displayed in, and other settings like color and font size. "

    I guess I'm just not that familiar with how most of these systems work. I tried for almost an hour to figure out what to do with the four chat windows, trying to get them on different channels like I'm used to running (about 10 at a time on Eve). I was trying to figure out how to do it from the chat options window (which I lost somehow towards the end--all the little buttons went away and I couldn't figure out how to get them back on, and could only remember the shortcuts for inventory and map) since that is what I was used to. I finally got "general" up in one window, but "trade" kept intruding on the one in the middle, and nothing I typed seemed to go where I wanted. *sigh* I got a little bit figured out now, and thanks to you guys I can now reference things while in-game.

    I just hope I get used to putting in the commands in the chat channels so my guy stops hopping around like a lunatic as I try to converse.

    I think EvE online and FFXI have the most different chat systems from most other games.

    Aye they do but I wish more games would use Eve style chat so customizable (sp?) and easy to configure can also make them transparent or 100 other different things

    If you don't like running games in a window like me, try alt tabing but when it doesn't work hit ctrl alt delete. The task manager box pops up, cancel it, and it minimizes AC2 the way alt tab should. Not sure if it will work for you but it works for me.
