500,000 accounts created for its opening month. As with all online games the numbers will fall and spike at times but lets hope EA keeps it up. You can read the article HERE
500k subscribers in the first month means nothing to be honest
the key is the REPEAT Subscribers, how many stay after teh first month, everyone brags how great their game is in the first month, the key is beyond that (once the free paly you get with the box is up) then you can say

Obviously. But we're not there yet, hence release numbers do have a mening.
Fastest-selling MMO of all time. Not bad. 500k people playing in just the first week is insane.
Hmm didnt Age of Conan sold like 700.000K within first 14 days ?
thought it was 800k... doesnt matter now anyway since they are under 400k (prolly under it by a lot)
MMOs currently playing: - About to play: Lord of the Rings Online Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

At one point they announced they had shipped 700K. Not sold. And that was after 14 days... WAR has been out 8 days now. I believe WAR had 1.5 million preorders sold to the stores (I would assume they've shipped that amount, at least).

they never used word preorder.. they shipped 1.5 mln to stores for retail launch.. go read again.. that means most stores still stocked for few good months..
i dunno how they see it as fastest selling mmo tho.. i would say both aoc and wow did beat them.. but i just cba searching for those numbers now..

My mistake. I meant to write "copies", not "preorders". If it was preorders there'd be over 1.5 million people playing it now. I don't recall the WoW numbers, but since it was longer for AoC to even ship the amount of copies that WAR already have players playing, AoC is a good deal behind WAR in this aspect. So unless the article is lying about WAR in comparison to WoW's sales during the first week, WAR wins in this category. One thing to bear in mind though is that WoW was only sold in the US at the beginning - it took them two months before they released in EU. WAR can combine the sales in both regions due to simultaneous EU and US launch.
Its simple business math really - build up a LOT of hype - get on some existing IP bandwagon with its hoard of fans (Conan, WarHammer, etc) - and then the box sales alone can offset all development costs in a month or so - and you can either retire off the sales alone - or move onto the NEXT MMO and trash it completely.
And what exactly is 500k sales anyway? That does NOT translate to 500k active subscriptions! It is merely 500k 30 day trials, and perhaps 10% subs if the game is ok. They just use that number to sensationalize and publicize more loudly, "Half a million people cannot be wrong! Subscribe now!" There are lies, even bigger lies, and then there is statistics!
You know, 500k after all the hype poured into it- in all of the US, EU, AU, and asia (yes asia. the game has bonofide gold sellers already), is really not a whole lot to be proud of. Hell, even Funcom had more than that it's first month. We all know what happened there...
I suspect it will come down to somewhere around 100k-200k when all is said and done. Not too bad, but not the second coming as many on this site, as well as certain WAR devs- would have you believe.
Oh, and more than a third of that pop will be in the form of goldsellers. Mark that down.
Waiting for- Tera, Jumpgate Evo, WH40K, WWE, WOD, TSW -- -- "Hey, if Activision liked it, then they should have put a ring on it," Double Fine President Tim Schafer said. "Oh great, now Beyonce is going to sue me too."
People don't buy MMORPG's with the intention of only playing for the first month. So far the release, and gameplay of Warhammer has been absolutely fantastic. As evident by it's dominant score on this website.
I don't expect that number to drop much after the first month, and I see it rising by the end of the year.

Read my previous post; I don't get what's with all these idiots that think people purchase MMORPG's with the intention of only sticking for the first month or something ridiculous. Warhammer has lived up to its hype and expectations and I don't see that number dropping to your figure.
AoC had more in it's first month? Well that's great and all but Warhammer is still in its second week. Age of Coan is probably a direct influence on why so many people didn't want to try out the first month of Warhammer and relive the same dissapointment and failures that Funcom served passionately.

It's a statistical fact that many buy the box, activate- then decide the game is not for them. Happens every time something new is released. Warhammer has not lived up to all the hype for some- you can just read some posts on this forum alone to find that out. Those whom have decided this game isn''t for them, will move on. Just like they have in many other games.
Age of Conan sold 700k their first month. That could be as much as 500k the first couple of weeks, then 200k as people began realising what they bought. Who knows? Well, one person might- but he doesn't work there any more.
Truth is Warhammer is turning out to be a very average mmo, and will end up with average subs. Not stellar numbers that the marketing machine is blasting out.

Didn't the website say they had like 900 people apply for beta on the counter? and only 500 actually baught it, thats not that good. I know i tried beta and decided not to buy.

I agree that the numbers will change after the free month is over ...
BUT ......
a) WARs game client is the most stable I've ever seen ..
b) Game mechanics are polished and workings very well ...
c) The RvR thing with Tiers etc is really bringing people together AND
is a good motivator to continue to play.
Frankly, so far I've never felt like "damn I've done everything .. what now?"
Instead I feel like "holy crap, there are so many things to do ... what shall I do now?"
Last night I had to force myself from not doing RvR together with people
since it's so fun that I forget to level my rank.
I think we will see a very small drop of players .. and then a monthly increase
of 50.000 - 100.000 players per month.

So twice as fast-selling as AoC at this point. Can you dig up the WoW numbers too?
WOW initially launched in North America and Oceanic only
WOW did not launch in Europe until 3 months later
WAR launched in both NA and Europe at same time
I did give links a few months back about WOW's launch when AOC fans were trumpeting its success

I agree its about the actual subs that matter - and that is unknown at this time
but most businesses give public announcements about how well a successful product is selling

AOC 500k in 2 weeks.
WAR 500k in 1 week.
But yes if you only look at week 1, it's not twice as fast. It's 25% faster (25% of 400k is 100k, and WAR sold 100k more in the first week).
