So, what really is fun in SWG these days?

I was just exchanging posts with an old friend from my guild on Ahazi, and I'm reminded that some really good people still play this game.  Bugs and ethical concerns aside for a moment, what are you guys finding fun in the game these days?  I'd like to hear about it :)

On the last vet trial I really liked the GU5 WS upgrade.  I think the current devs shined on that.  The system works well and for the NGE.

Cool, I heard good things about that too.  Nice to see the weaponsmiths get some much needed attention.  People had been asking for that for a while.  Glad it happened.

There is not a lot left that is fun. The instances get boring very quickly. The Meatlump Theme Park was OK for one pass through. Maybe SOE will release the Teletubbie Theme Park soon...

Hoth may be OK if it is not like the other instances. Hopefully it is somewhat complex and takes some time to do.

The only kick that I have gotten fairly recently was starting a new toon and decking it out with high end equipment that I have collected over the years. A level 5 toon with clothing equiped with high level attatchments, 2 cybernetic arms (they give you armor plus more damage), and a Black Metal Gaderiffi Baton (equipable at level -1 and does 475 damage. Level 5 weapons do around 20-30 damage I think). Then going out and doing the Legacy Quests and watching guys 15 levels higher than me squirm because I am killing things that thay can't. Childish.

I've just started playing the trial the last few days and i'm having a blast. I helped a guy out yesterday with some trinity mission in space and it was really different from any MMORPGs i've played before.

The GU5 update to start things off.

For once it is nice to see people running around with Weapons that we saw in the Movies. Granted I do still keep my DD6 Collection Pistol around and it still finds alot of use. I like the fact that I have been running around with canon Weapons. The other day I got a tell from someone who asked if I was running some kinda exploit. Namely I was killing Mobs with a Level 90 DH-17 Pistol, and he believed I (On a Smuggler) was somehow firing Specials with a Carbine.

    Space,

Still alot of fun both the PvE and PvP sides of Space. On the PvE side, yeah you have those nice shiny new Gunships that can sit at almost any Fighter spawn in game and take no damage. However believe me the higher tier Fighters CAN be hard. One missile from a Tier 8 can really hurt, anything above that (yes there is an above) can one shot ya. Taking on one isn't a big deal, two however... Still it's harder and some of the new Space Missions can be very hard as they spawn the higher tier ships.

Space PvP has been the big change for me. Coming off Kauri and going to Starsider has been imho one of the best moves I could have made. Granted Starsider does have rules about doing Space PvP, flying an Eta-2 or for right now an ARC-170 is looked down on. Still Starsider does have some fun Space PvP.

    Role Playing,

This really go's without saying, as I am a Role Player and I do also RP over on AoC as well. Still I find that I do enjoy RP, maybe a little more so now then before. Now granted you do still get RPer's that god mode, or people who "must" do emote duels. However I found a nice RP guild of mob types who don't mind my main Smuggling for them and moonlighting as a Rebel Pilot.

I'm going to say a shocker here, but in the past few weeks both on SWG and on AoC I've been seeing a trend of new Role Players coming in and trying out RP for the first time and enjoying it. Could *gasps* more people be getting into RP? Time will tell.

    The Card Game,

Oh I'll get flamed for this one, but I've found myself enjoying the card game. Maybe it's due to the fact that with my first starting deck and boosters I went and started playing a few hands. Then after checking out some of my cards I found I had a Darth Vader. I was a big fan of my first starting deck (Rebel) even tho I am learning how to play a Rebel deck a tad better now... Still I did go out and buy a Sith deck and well I just find that I really do enjoy the Card Game. Also a few friends and I have been useing the Card Game for in game gambling of credits.

    Heroics,

Before people start on me about how "It's not canon!" or something like that. It's not, what it is however is a fun little side thing to do. The Tusken one is fun, and some how that ends up being the one we do the most. The Nightsister one I'm not all that hot for. IG88 isn't too bad, then again I just like blasting Droids. Exar Kun, well I can look past a few things with it again not my cup of tea. And the ISD I really enjoy doing, also due to the fact that I am a Smuggler that one makes me feel somewhat more useful thanks to the buff you get if a Smuggler takes the group to the ISD.

On the whole canon of it thing... I stopped and found that I really didn't care. UO really didn't follow Ultima canon all that much. Age of Conan has King Conan sitting in his Castle all the time... World of Warcraft... Yeah I know it takes place after Warcraft 3, but things in that game tend to feel a little to silly sometimes. Still the content is fun, and I do enjoy it.

    Smuggler,

Before you give me the whole "Oh Smugglers still cannot do any 'real' Smuggling." or the great "Smuggler doesn't have Spice anymore." I find that Smuggler is a Class that I enjoy playing.

The Smuggling System isn't too bad, it would be nice if SOE did add onto it. Or put in someway for the Underworld Classes (Spy, BH and Smuggler) to interact with one another a little bit more. By this I mean more of an Underworld System. As for a fully blow Player Smuggling System, even back in the day I didn't think it would happen. And even if it did knowing SOE with SWG we could have made bets on how buggy it would have been.

Spice... Well here's the thing... I saw Spice as something that someone who is more of the Doctor type would make. I mean Smugglers just move the stuff, we don't make it.

Outside of all of that however, I feel Smuggler is a very underrated class even today. I've seen Melee Smugglers take out both Dark and Light Jedi. Pistol Smuggler, well we are the DPS kings of the game. Also with all the Pistol Buff's and what not we can get, believe me we can be nasty with the right buffs.

I do want to point out that I do have con's with the game.

    Collections,

Good idea gone very bad. I take that back... Some of the Collections are not that bad, infact some of them are fun to do and offer a nice reward. The "Spy" Chair Collection I did enjoy doing. The fault is some of them tend to be way too much on the 'rare' side of things. The Jedi ones are a pain to get done with, I have guildmates still hunting down a few of the Jedi Collections. Some of the other's tend to feel too "rare" as well.

The idea isn't bad, it does need work however.

    The GCW,

The whole "Decaying Faction" thing gets old really fast. Also it would be nice to have "other" things to buy in the system, like lets say Rebel Uniforms?

    The Engine,

5 years later and it still runs at times like it did 5 years ago. It still tends to crash, the game has it's "ugly" moments. Really if SOE wants to really get SWG going, replacing the Engine/Client would be a great first step.

Ugh, I had previously written something before but IE8 it all its Beta glory decided it wanted to crash :|  Anyway...

Here's what I'm doing currently that I find fun:

PvP - I enjoy PvP'ing as a debuff Medic (much like Combat Medic of pre-NGE).  You usually win in some kinda evil ways which all comes down to reading your opponents moves and reacting at the right time for the best effect.  PvP as a BH/BM is also quite fun as you're not only managing your character but your pet as well and it's also a bit of a challenge to be good at it, but once you get to that level you can do quite a bit of damage :)

Heroics - There's a few reason I find these fun.  Firstly, I enjoy group related activites, which is kind of important to enjoy Heroics.  As a problem solver type of person, I enjoy the various challenges they present - from the simple challenges that the Tusken instance provides to the much more complex ones that the Exar Kun instance has.  I enjoy playing a support role and the Medic profession, which plays a pretty important role in the Heroics and also provides a number of its own challenges.  I also enjoy the community aspect of them, probably the most actually.   In the groups I run with for them, we don't have the typical "you must only speak when asked and only about the instance" attitude, we like to let our hair down and have fun with pretty random conversations.

Collections - Some people focus on these as their main game activity.  Personally, I think this is the wrong way to go about them and takes the fun out of them and makes them a grind.  I choose to do them casually when I feel like it.  For instance, tonight I casually did some Meatlump collections to try pickup a Meatlump collection peice I've been after for a few weeks now while I was watching some TV and chatting with guildies on Vent and in guildchat.  I'm a pack rat by nature, so Collections kinda come natural to me, heh.

Crafting - I've been crafting for 3.5 years now and I still find it fun :)  Crafting is like a whole different game, with its own form of PvP.  As I mentioned, I enjoy playing a support profession and in a way, playing an Armoursmith/Weaponsmith is kinda like being a support profession.  I get a bit of a kcik by seeing weapons I've made showing up in the combat log, heh.  I enjoy the challenge of trying new things to attract business from the competition by either making stuff better then they can or using your people skills.  There is a bit of pressure inolved with crafting, especially once you'be built up a reputation and you're getting a constant stream of orders and for some odd reason, I tend to enjoy pressure situations - probably why I still post on these forums :P

This really is perhaps the best part of SWG. Crafting is really the gem of the whole SWG experience IMO, regardless of what version of SWG one prefers.

But I look at crafting from a slightly different perspective then you Obraik. I enjoyed being an architect for the first 2 years of SWG because I liked what I could do to help my friends, guild, and city. I liked building something with others, and having something that we could collectivly be proud of - our metropolis.

Being an architect allowed me to help develop a virtual community, as well as contribute to make our mark on the landscape of Dantooine.

Well, architect operates a bit differenty to AS and WS which are heavily stat based.  This makes them, IMO, more competitive then other crafting professions like Architect, Tailor, etc.

agreed. I used to buy up 30k deeds just so I could provide the BEST armor cores possible on the server.

Who wouldn't want server capped cores for their RIS or Mando?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming otherwise. Architect just fit my playstyle. But there certainly was some competitveness to it at times.

Oddly enough when I did try Chef for a while I found I didn't have to be competitive. As long as I kept my vendor stocked people would eat it up - pun intended of course ;)  It was by no means the best stuff around, yet it still sold just fine. I think I made more credits at Chef then I did at Architect.

I believe they are planing an Architect revamp in one of the next few Game Updates.

Architect as of now doesn't do that bad, some of the Collection items can be made my Architect's so people look for them in order to make those items. Architect now has SW with it as well, and believe it or not on a server like Starsider you can make a ton of money now. A friend of mine still makes a nice living off people coming in and buying Missiles and Chaft's. The Gunships come in schem form, so people will see you to make those. The Space Collection stuff is in Schem form as well, along with the Schems like the Nova Engine's. And I tend to tip someone who can RE parts of me.

So you can still make money in SWG by playing a trader.
