If you're interested in a bit of reading, the official site has the entire known history up to this point. It's in the "story" section of www.worldofwarcraft.com
I spent part of my day reading it earlier this week, to brush up a bit on Warcraft storyline. I ended up being completely drawn into the story and loving every bit of it.
No, he didn't. If you read the history on the WoW site it says he survived the blow and escaped back into the Outland.
I would say they're equally matched. But the question was not who is the most powerful character in Warcraft history, it was who is the most powerful character in the WoW game. Some of the players in that thread are discussing that Illidan already is in game, while Arthas...now the Lich King...will be put in with a Northrend expansion.
For the closed beta testers, I think they can't get to Illidan even though he is in the code. He is in the Outland, so the dark portal has to be opened to get to him. The opening of the dark portal is a large event that will happen sometime after release. It will take many powerful warlocks working together to accomplish it. Once it's accomplished, it's set that way in the world. What I mean by this is that it's not a quest that people can do over and over or that many people can do. Whoever helps to accomplish it gets to be a part of it, but after that, it's done.
The only way we'll be able to fight Illidan would be by opening the Dark Portal and assualt his forces (Naga, Blood Elves, Draenai, etc.) head on in Outland.
That's probably why Illidan is considered being the most powerful in WoW atm.
Yes, the portal CAN be opened by warlocks, but not just any lone warlock running around. It takes many many POWERFUL warlocks to get it open. I do believe that I've seen blue text on that fact. So I don't imagine we'll see the opening of the dark portal until a lot of the warlocks reach higher levels and work together to open the portal.
As far as the closed beta goes, they haven't opened up content like this for the testers. I imagine they're testing it internally and will not release it to beta testers at all. They're saving it for release. So, the portal has not been opened...Illidan has not fallen. We can look forward to hearing about huge world events like this once we're in the game and even possibly help participate in them.

sounds very very exciting
I would like to get to high lvl and face him one day with you guys...
from what i've heard, illidan was more powerful than arthas at the time of the fight, but arthas got all the power of the lich king (notice frostmourne glowing blue) to stun illidan. even though arthas is now uber arthas, kil'jaden, who created the lich king, may give illidan some of his power to finish the job of destroying the lich king and therby increasing his power. all i know for sure was that in WCIII, whenever i faced off illidan alone with arthas with me, no matter how hard i tried, i could not get illidan down on that last level.

One thing just came into my mind.. are we talking NPC or Monsters here?
WoW with include Dragons, right? Anybody met the Great Horned Red Dragon with 1.000.000 hitpoints, immune to all magic spells and unpenetratable scales?!
Uhm...I voted for the dragon. I mean come on, a Dragon. But that's what I would think it would be. If you are going by how the game played out, it would be Illidian. Because you know, the whole demon and the skull thing. Yeah. I was surprised when Arthas hurt Illidian, totally caught me off guard.
I was like "Okay, another walk in the park victor for the Nightel- WOAH! That hit had to hurt...

Here's a desktop wallpaper of Illidan, off of the Blizzard site.

I think that was taken from one of the cinematics in Warcraft III.
And, here's what he looked like in-game:

And we know from what blizz said that Warlocks CAN open the dark portal.

Hail to the King, baby.
I hope he hasn't been killed in beta yet. that was a huge bummer in CoH, having the ultimate baddie dead after 30 days .

Hi,

//Petros the Gnome

Ill is somewhat a Neutral type I hope we don't HAVE to kill him. Maybe send some of us on a quest to kill Arthas in the next expansion?
