Husband and I were talking about this the other day. Basically we've been playing a load of free to plays until we find the next bandwagon to jump on and I mentioned that they all had a certain look and feel to them aside from the obvious 'hey I'm not paying for this' idea.
Bascially I came up with 3 main things,
-Interface is sloppy/confusing/bugged
-Fonts are all ripped from windows and don't fit the style
-Really elaborate stories on the websites that are instantly useless since all you do is grind and wonder why none of the NPC's give quests.
So what I'm asking here is what are the most common characteristics of free games that you don't see in pay games? What makes the free games look and feel free(cheap)?

Because 90% of the population ingame doesnt speak English.

In addition to what you said, I have to add the IMoD (Item mall of Doom :-D)!

If I am the owner of F2P I will sell items from item shop also free and keep it 100% FREE.
And how exactly do you plan to make money? Servers, bandwidth, employees cost money. Having ads won't be enough.
Well the most significant difference is the manipulation of mechanics to coerce and encourage purchasing stuff from the item shops. That is of course the design of the revenue system, to get players to buy as much as possible, regardless of the impact on the quality of the game, unlike flat subscription games, where the revenue system dictates a focus on game quality, to encourage additional subscriptions and longer retention.
Well, Item malls and stuff like that are obvious... how else do they make their money...
BUT ! It does have that certain feeling, all of them have similar graphics if they are 3D, and if they are 2D.
And its pretty hard to have a decent conversation with someone, and i dont mean everyone speaks other languages, just the UI is complicated.
And the quests are retarded.... like no thought put into any quests.
so i agree with you.
Its easy to pee in the toilet, but most of us dont.
Well Tobe honest. What dose free mean to you? I for one see SOME games where they are forcing you to buy from the Item mall.Whats even worst the pricing is so outrages it feel like you are paying for those who don't pay.I don't think anyone here will buy a 1 item for 60 dollars.Whats even funnier yet. Some games are still in beta with the item mall open. Can anyone seriously say what free mmo game is really worth it, were we ALL can enjoy? I wont pay for any free to play game that is built half fast. However will support a game if it meets what i like but the pricing has Tobe fair..
Some people rob you at gun point..Others will rob you at "Ball Point Pen"
If there are 5 millions people playing your game 100% free everyday, you shouldn't be worried about where the money comes from. Go to business school and study more about economics.
FTP games are similier I find is due to the grind. Don't like it but, understand the reasoning(item mall). If I thru you in a pit of stinking sh$# for days on end And asked if you would like to buy my magic rope(+3 climbing) from my item shop, I think I would say yes don't you?
Item mall aside, if you look at a screen with a free game on it and then look at a pay game you can usually see a difference. What visually makes it look cheaper? Any other ideas?
This is more what I'm looking for. What makes them all have the same feel to their graphics? I know what you mean, but I can't seem to put it into words about why they look the same. Too clean and perfect maybe?
nyahahaha now thats funny but true UI is sloppy and somewhat always bugged, also true that Fonts are from windows, well the last ones a little bit.... no no.... some games do give quests but its quite repetitive quests... or same all in all
