...quite literally.
I have a nVidia 8 series gfx card with over 350M of video ram. 2G of system memory, over 3GHz processor. I can play LOTRO in all it's Direct X10 golor without a hiccup. WoW I can obviously play (as their graphics are not taxing).
I don't get why WAR performs like crap. Inside Aldorf is a nightmere. The region just beyond the Dwarf starter area is bad as well. RvR becomes a FPS jerk-fest ... and this is with specular, lightmaps, grass, everything shut off -- still uses 95-98% of the system's memory?! LOTRO with it's ultra-realistic trees, dx10 shadows, and water reflections doesn't even scratch 65% memory usage.
It seems like they need to work on optimizing the graphics engine - especially if they expect to base the game around RvR content. I honestly get headaches after playing the game for more than a couple of hours because of the poor animations (background animations go at half or quarter speed) and FPS drops in poorly textured areas (like Aldorf).
Fanboys can flame - but the facts are the facts. The graphics in this game are not as sophisticated as LOTRO, and a little bit better than WoW (but not by much) -- yet it doesn't perform anywhere near as well as either of those games. If this isn't fixed or even acknowledged to be addressed by the developers in the upcoming weeks I don't see myself sticking around.
Flame on!

I have an AGP CARD! (Sapphire 3850 type with 512megs of DDR3 ram), a P4 3.0 core, 2 gigs of PC3200 DDR ram.
I have very few issues with the game now. I went in and forced the card to run flat out. Forced 4x AA on, Min-mapping over clocked the card and ram... I run the game with most things on high (I turn off Grass and scale back distance view to 1 notch) and well... Go forth and tweak your card sir!

No he's right. The game is just suppose to run smooth on all machines that meet the requirements.
It needs a patch, no more tweaking. It's not crysis.
Am I on crazy pills to consider running the absolute minimum settings (which I am already doing) and still getting horrible performance ... compared to LOTRO with all the settings maxed and everything runs perfect? This game doesn't have graphics that come close to anything special.
I think they need to do some work on their game -- as I'm not the only one with issues as I'm reading other forums.
I've already spent hours tweaking and it does little if anything. It runs pretty much the same on both rigs I got:
2.4GHz 2G RAM with 256M ATI 9600 PRO (i don't expect it to run nice on here)
3.2GHz 2G RAM with 320M nVidea 8800 GTS
No, I hope they're working very hard on a big performance patch right now.. because otherwise the game will not be successful.
Well I'm just relieved to know it's not me. I thought something was wrong with my system...
Good lord people, patience is a virtue. Tone done your settings for 30 days while Mythic figures it out. I'm playing WAR on a three and half year old P4 3.8 Ghz 2 gb ram with a Geforce 6800 waiting for a good deal on a new comp still. Life could be better, but I play the game and enjoy it. These comparisons to established and polished games are getting silly.
I agree, I hope it's addressed in patches. What I'm surprised at is how they have no offical forums or any dialogue (other than a post here or there on the herald). Most MMOs have extensive user forums. I know Mythic usually is good about that too - back from when I played DAOC.
I'll wait and see -- but honestly i can't play the game for more than 2 hrs before my eyes hurt me.
Mythic does not run forums. They did not put them up for DAoC either. They don't believe in putting up the resources to manning them when they can put those resources somewhere else. This argument goes waaaaay back to the DAoC days.

Give the game some time. When LotRO came out the graphic performance was the same way. I played it from day one and can still remember the hitches and complaints from people. Just go look at the forum history on their site, you'll see.
The same is true for WoW as well. When it first came out people were having trouble with lag and graphic performance. After a few patches, the issues were fixed.
I'm not making excuses for them, I'm just giving you the reality of what goes on with these games. It's a common pattern.
In all honesty, the game isn't running any worse than LotRO when it came out or WoW. Actually, in my opinion LotRO had a smoother launch that WoW from what I saw, and WAR is going just as smooth as LotRO so far. And compared to Conan, WAR's launch is stellar!
Just be patient. I know it's hard and frustrating but it will get better and you'll be glad you did.

I actually find the game runs more slow on medium for me. I put in on high, turn off the water reflects, shadows and grass, party only effects and well....
If I am in for a heavy nights RVRing I'll go in and turn the animations to balanced and the effects to balanced, self. And RESTART.
Seriously, restart the game if you go from low to medium or change the water reflections.
You'll see a huge change.

hm... i hope i dotn get any trouble with crossfire... omg
now i am so scare... i just got WAR
all through beta and now live ive had no problems at all with this game. runs smooth, no crashes, no lag. its suprising for me to read this thread. i had no ideas anyone had issues.
my buddy has an old POS machine, and he plays it without any problems.
in CB they had a patch that made performance really good for mid and low end systems but in affect did this to high end systems only so now for the new month we will be like this
8600 GT 512MB. Its a nightmare for me. I don't understand it, either, because I can play Oblivion, COD4, EQ2, and other just dandy. Not on max settings, mind you, but its not a complete disaster, either.
I get so frustrated that I just log.
Clocking up a GFX card is only a good idea if it have a fan and for clocking the memory of it you must have cooling on it too if you plan to clock them up. You must also have a good idea of what you are doing or you might end up burning it.
No, this sounds like a problem with the game engine to me, some cards get problems with it and it must be patched. Fast also or Mythic will lose a lot of customers, RvR really blows if you lagg all the time.

They have a built in program that allows you to crank up the Card and monitors it. I have a good cooling system in my box. I leave it cracked
