Everyone has their own perspective but here's what I saw when I started playing..
I played this when it was "Space Cowboy" by a company called gPotato I believe. At first I was so happy, it was really fun being able to fly a ship in first person and control it rather than click around moving your ship.
You do missions, etc and I think you can train skills and whatnot. I wish I could tell you more but I can't remember exactly why I started getting bored, I guess i never tried the PvP and got tired of doing missions. You can also land at a station and buy things, anyway best thing is to try it or read more about the game haha
I played it to like 55 when it was sco, then to like 40 again in the european version... Once you hit 50 and start the pvp it's "fun on the bun!". Lots of pew pew and stuff blowin up. I believe someone in another thread refered to it as a gank fest. It's really not like that at all. There is a downside. after like level 25 there's about a solid weeks worth of grinding to level 50 or so where pvp starts up.... I do believe they added an arena though, and that'll give you a diversion from the inevitable monotony.
Honestly, I would say when you're in the ship it is fun, but the lack of effort put into character creation, ground movement, and voice effects are pretty annoying. When you first start play a woman yells all sorts of obvious things at you. The tutorial is made for retarded badgers with quests such us "Turn Up", "Turn Left", and the exciting, "Turn Right". There are only about 3 male characters to choose from, one of which looks ok, but every other weaboo in the game chooses so you get to look like monotonous sheep. So I chose a female char so I could be slightly unique. The toons are point and click, and while flying the game runs smooth as silk, but when I'm in the cities it's rather choppy. Then it's a mindless grind, mission after mission. But it's more entertaining than many mmo's because you're ability to kill things is a bit more based on skill and a bit less on how much of your soul you've dedicated to the game. Having a friend to do missions with makes it 10x more fun, and I think the pvp is pretty fun, even though I die a lot. And if you didn't hear yet, yes this game used to be Space Cowboys Online, and I'm pretty sure that the differences between Ace and SCO are negligible and very little has been done to improve the game so far. Hopefully the new owners will make some improvements, if they just fix the bugs, add some content, and smooth out the wrinkles it could be an amazing game.
Actually, the game just went under a huge expansion as of 2 days ago. It's still very buggy because the GM's actually ASKED the players if we wanted to help test it or just wait until the final, polished version. Naturally we all voted to test it early ;D
As per the game itself, it's a heavily skill based game. This is NOT your standard "Point, click, throw in some skills and move to the next guy" MMO. The actual avatar variety IS somewhat poor, I'd agree, but you're only not in your gear (plane) when you're in town, maybe 10% of your time. Unlike other MMO's, you control EVERYTHING you do. Altitude, strafing, barrel rolls, speed, boosts, you can even fly upside down if you turn off autobalance (though I recommend keeping it on for a bit while you get used to everything). The grind is made easier because the GM's introduced a 50% extra EXP bonus because they didn't want it to be so much a grind game.
But enough about the grind, that's the LEAST important portion of this game. This game is ALL ABOUT the PvP. The wars are amazing. There is so much strategy and skill involved when fighting someone else, that it far outdoes any other MMO I've ever played. The maneuverability offered in this game surpasses most, if not all, other MMO's I've even read about. I grant you that PvP is hard for the lower levels, depending on your "class" (in game known as "gear"), but as you war more (and warring should be done more then grinding as you level up, it's just way too much fun) and get better, the game in it's entirety will open itself to you. From Major Mothership Wars and Strategic Point Battles (both are nation vs. nation), to small skirmishes and raiding the opposing nation's maps (there are safe zones to grind in without fear of being pummeled by a high level raider), this game has more PvP Opportunities then you can shake a stick at.
The community is amazing. After all the versions of this game that I have played, this is by far the most helpful, fun, and talkative bunch I've found. The GM's are above and beyond any GM in ANY game I've ever played, hosting daily presents at 5:25 EST, as well as random events thrown in every few days or so, consistently. You won't go even one week without a GM event. Not only that, but many times the GM's will visit, answer questions, and just hang out with the player base to get a feel for how things are going.
I'm not someone who just played this game for a few days or hours, I've logged months into this game in all 3 versions and have experienced everything this game has to offer, and it's a 10/10. If you go to the ACE Online site and go to Individual Fame Rankings, I'm Bashy. While I don't show up in the level rankings, there IS like a 20 way tie for being level 80 at the moment, and I'm not sure how they determined who gets up there XD
To sum it up, if you want to PvP on a massive scale in a way that actually takes skill, and not simple point, click, and throw in skills, this game is for you. There are thousands of variants of items and hundreds of upgrades available, and best of all, it's NOT a Cash Shop based game. I haven't purchased a single thing and am still on par with those who buy a LOT. Granted my weapons are not QUITE as good, but the skill factor in this game far outweighs any amount of Cash Shopping.
Anyone who says this game sucks or is total garbage has never played it past level 38. Sure, its a grind-happy fun fun time until then, but once you reach that magical level, everything is all better and fun.
This isn't a game that you can judge simply from what others say. Once you get engaged in a large war, you will forever be ensnared in the awesomeness that is ACE Online.
I'm sorry all the people who say this game is garbage, your impatience has lost you an awesome game.
This game is a great one. For those who bash it obviously have not played it enough to really review it. The game involves skill, isnt like most MMORPGs where its click to move. The gameplay is amazing. Sure the game takes quite a bit of grinding, but even that isnt mind numingly boring.
Give it a shot, try out different gears. The game is great, you just need to know the basics when you play. Read the guides a bit, learn the basics in tutorial, and your set to learn. You will be able to find quite a few people that will help you out along the way.
This game, is THE ONLY game I've ever played that offers u a variety and u never hav to pay a monethly subscription. Athough if u want some more bonuses, u can also buy some items for just a mizzly $5 dollars. Best of all some items u ge to keep forever.
Out of all the online games I've Played, this is the most single game that offers everything tht Ive always wanted. Sure it takes a while to download, but once u get in-game, its hell of alot of fun! I gaurantee it!
All but the last post shows a pretty cool community. thanks very much for the information. it was helpful enought to make me want to try it. And as one post put it. what do ya have to lose? Most all posts are older ones so I am hoping its still a good game compared to the other newer ones out there. But then again what other games did come out like this? Thanks again for taking the time to post helpful, constructive (wheterh you like it or not it was well said), information/opinions. Later.
This post is intentionally written as to not make any sense what so ever. Thank You Very Much.
Bumpin' to say this game definitely is still around, and server populations are rising. With this game and the massive wars involved, the more people, the more fun; almost exponentially so.

Why don't you find out for yourself? It's not like it cost anything to try you know.
