thinking of switching to this game

I'm a 2 year WoW played and I played Aoc for a little while, but is saw a video of this game and became interested. Is now a good time to join? i know the new exspansion is coming out some thime soon. My main interest is end game content, is it ang good? I know this game doesn't have much of a pvp system, which is ok for me since im siwtching to playing pve over pvp. Also is the life tim subscription owrth the money? I know this is a long post and thanks in advanced for you input.

I am down to 5 days on my 14 day trial of LOTRO, and I have to say I enjoy it very much.

There are alot of quests.. i mean alot.. i have had plenty turn grey on me because i just outleveled them before i got to them, due to so many quests being multi part. I am only level 18, and still enjoying it.

aswell pvp (i am not really one for it but...) at level 10 you unlock monster play, which is kinda neat as you get to play on the evil side, as a lvl 50 i believe. try it out atleast!

another thing that blew me away was the music abilities.. to play music that is, i came into bree town one day and 2 hobbits were sitting playing (guitar and drum) Santana - black magic woman.. that just amazed me and forced me to lose a day of play time just figuring out how to do it myself...lol.

I really say try it. atleast get the 14 day trial, if you like it you can do a full purchase with 1 month free i think for 19.99USD.

There is a decent amount of end game content, though I wouldn't say enough for the hardcore gamer type. There are 2 main raids and I think 5-10 6man instances. (more raids and instances coming with the new expansion obviously) I have not tried the raids yet, but if the instances are any indication of the fun factor, I cant wait to try the raids! But since there are only a 'few', hardcore gamers tend to get bored. (not always, but usually).

I have only recently started the PvP (technically called PvMP in this game) and once again, really fun, but the hardcore gamer will get bored after a while.

As you see, this game sways toward the casual crowd (though like I said, there a decent amount of hardcore gamers that do enjoy and play it). Within the first year, the game has added 2 entire new regions, along with many other updates and now the expansion soon. So I see this game lasting a long time and I already have my lifetime sub and do not regret it one bit (have been playing 7 months and still not close to being tired of it)

...but its all personal preference, try the 14-day trial and see how you like it  :)

I played for 2 months but found the character system far too basic and far too limited especially for a p2p game couple with some bad animations it was enough to make me quit

but the enviroment has been really well done, wierdly i actually prefered it on a lower setting to those you see in the screenshots as it gave it some rougher edges

the quests have had some thought put into them and they aren't all go over there and kill x amount of those

Definitely worth a try even if only to look around middle earth for a bit but I would recommend going for 2 or 3 months by paying monthly before thinking about lifetime subscriptions and would also recommend trying each race as they have different prolugue stories, human being my favourite and went through more than once

Well, I'm also a wow vet. I played that game from the start till now. I bought lotro a while ago and played it for a little month. Due to I have a bussy life I quited with this game fro a while but I think I'll come back next weekend. I'm not that far in the game yet. I tried some different classes and races. Did a bid pvp, I enjoyed the pvp although it's limited. But this is a pve game and it's great, good for casual play in my opinion. I didn't spend that much time in it yet but it is fun!. I don't know how the end game is because I'm not that far yet but I suggest you to just enjoy the leveling. Really try the 14 trail, if you think this game could be something for you. And about the life subscription, I dunno. I believe it is cheaper when you just play this game on and of like i do.

I've been looking for a game to play, thinking I would be playing warhammer I didn't try any others. Hated War, didn't want to play WoW and so I ordered Vangaurd. I saw that LOTR had a 14 day trial and thought I would do that while I wait for Vangaurd. I got Vangaurd and I won't be playing it, didn't even install it. (heard VG got alot of bugs worked out and it seems like it has alot to keep people busy so that might be one to look into now/again) I wish I would have tried LOTR a LONG time ago! I am having fun and the people there are great (Brandywine server) You can actually ask a retarded noob question and people answer it in a mature way. Many people around so it's not dead at all and I've met many strangers (higher levels not in my kinship "aka guild") willing to help me and it is very easy to get into the story of the game because who doesn't understand what's going on ya know? :) After playing on pvp servers with the other games, it's nice to finally not get ganked and there is the monster pvp for when you are in the mood. If you are looking for a new game It is worth the 14 day trial at least. I also notice there are many first time players with low lvl toons, thinking they are there for the same reason I was so now is the time to try it, very very easy to get into same level parties with others that are new to the game as well.

I've been playing LOTRO since fairly early on in to closed beta and from the first time I logged in I haven't looked back personally.   The quests are definately well thought out -- not the typical cookie cutter especially where they play off of the tolkien lore.   The epic line of quests or book quests are lots of  fun and present a pretty neat well thought out story --- great unexpected twist at the end of bk 14!

As for end game content it's young, however, the two raids are a lot of fun.  Rift (a 12 man raid) that ends with a balrog to kill is a LOT of fun -- it's the main raid that everyone does.  I've killed the balrog probably 20 to 30 times and I"m not bored of the fight yet.   However, it really does stop there at the moment.  The other raid (a 24 man raid) is Helegrod and not utilised as much because the beginning features a snow storm presently that causes a lot of computer systems to lag  like crazy.   However the final boss in the zone (Thorog an undead dragon) is a very fun fight that many haven't won yet (including myself).  3 reasons though -- 1 it's hard to get 24 together for this zone 2 the rewards gear wise aren't that great and 3 it's a very difficult fight to learn so a lot don't bother learning it due to point number 2.

The 6 man instances are well thought out and lots of fun -- there are 6 what I consider higher end instances right now that have relatively difficult final bosses as well as 3 really cool dungeons designed around earning reputation with various races and then there's the always entertaining goblin town.   There are also 3 other 6 man instances that bring you through the lower levels that have some fun boss fights in their own right.

The content that exists has been a lot of fun -- although like someone already pointed out there's not a ton for the hardcore player.  Even Rift didn't take nearly as long as some of the harder core raiding instances in other games for the top end to figure out.     As far as difficulty goes I"d put it on par with the other games I"ve played (EQ, EQ2, WoW, etc).  I've heard some say it's too easy but other the other games really that hard?  Besides it's not the difficulty level that's that important to me it's how fun the encounters are.  These encounters are decently hard to figure out and also a LOT of fun to do and the repeat value goes beyond the gear.   It's not uncommon for a completely geared out group to kill the balrog for fun for example even though no one really needs anything from the encounter.

I hope this helps -- definately a very bias'd opinion I love this game for sure!  Hope you come over and give it a try.

I downloaded the trial and about few hours in the game I went to my local GameStop and cancelled my preorder for Wrath of the Lich King and will most likely use the money to buy a full copy once my trial in over. Thanks for all your responses, this is a very good game!

Pretty sure you won't regret it :) especially with Moria coming this month (?), there'll be heavy tons to play !

I myself have serious symptoms due to not being able to play the game for almost 2 months now, but that is because IRL issues (switching flat, girlfriend etc...) so I can't complain (too much sex lol), but still can't wait to come back to this game asap :)

Don't rush into things. While I'm not saying it's a bad game, it gets a lot lot worse shortly after the areas a Free Trial member can reach.  I thought it was the greatest thing I had ever played for a while, until I got into it more.

Hopefully Moria will fix most of the problems (more content, more people)

I can still sense a little unjust bitterness from you towards the game. Let's try to be objective for a change, shall we?

First of all, a Free trial member can reach *all* areas. There is no restriction. If someone plays 24/7 it might be even to cap a player - well of course, no one in their right mind would do that.

No, areas do NOT get any worse above levels 20, 30 or 40. There could be problems of not being able to find PUGs for each and every FS quest, but this is not the equivalent of the game getting "a lot lot worse" at any stage. A lot of things actually open up as you proceed to higher levels. At launch, some level ranges were a little harder to play (due to lack of content), but after Evendim and Forochel were introduced - playing through the game is a piece of cake - no issues in solo play. I admit that FS quests can not always be done, but that's due to the lifestage the game is currently in (19 months after launch, 1 month before expansion.). When Moria is launched, a HUGE number of players will try the new classes, so be prepared to have the newbie and later the lower range (Lonelands, North Downs) zones packed with players.

After playing maaaaany MMORPGS, including the last 2 (AoC and WAR), my opinion is that LOTRO is, at the moment, the best PVE mmorpg to play.

How long ago did you try the trial? I have been playing for about 7 months (1.5 months of being a lvl 50) and still very much enjoying myself, with plenty to do... and I have an alt at lvl 44, and I am having plenty of fun replaying all the quests... so yea... whatever  :)

  • musicman2000musicman2000 Member Posts: 91

Yah admittedly I"m bias'd but this whole statement that after a 2 week trial period the game gets worse really needs to be justified -- and frankly it wasn't it was just a stated opinion with no backing giving it little merit.

The potential issues at this stage in the game I can forsee could be population woes between level 20 and 40 -- it can be troublesome to get groups at this stage but not impossible especially on one of the bigger servors (brandywine, Landroval, Ellendilmir for example).   However there is so much solo content in the game (almost too much now hehe) that really leveling shouldn't be an issue at all.  At this point I"ve got 2 level 50's, a level 41, a 24 and a 16 -- I enjoy all the characters in all of their stages.

With the level of knowledge I have about all the content available to you at the level points I would be surprised if someone started to complain about boredom until long after they've been 50 and have run the 2 raid instances way too many times etc.   But that would take months to get to that point not soon after your trial runs out! hehe

Obviously the game isn't for everyone -- but I think it's safe to say if you enjoy'd leveling in WoW you ought to enjoy leveling in LOTRO more because it's a similar style of getting quests etc but I think the quests are much better thought out and implemented.

o.0  An interesting statement there. This game is pretty much based on being casual friendly. I consider myself a casual gamer (5 hrs total on weekdays, and no more than 10rs total on the weekends). I have gone two weeks not playing (stupid RL) and you never feel like you are falling behind in anything. You can pretty much play at your own pace and just enjoy yourself. You should consider the $200 lifetime sub from the founders referal; pay once and play whenever you feel like it.

I changed jobs that required me to pull massive overtime reducing my play from 30+ hours a week to 5-8.

Seeing all my friends progress faster than me and missing out on guild activities was too much for me to deal with.

Sure I could of stayed and played casually but I enjoyed playing with my friends to much and it suxed that I couldnt keep up with them.

got a quick question, if I go buy the game can I just use the free 30 days until I can get a time card or do I have to enter my credit card info to use my free 30 days until I can get a time card? (Id don't like to pay with credit cards because sometime they charge twice accidently)

While I never had a problem using credit cards (debit card actually as CM accepst Visa Electron!), I assume you don't need one to play, since there are prepaid game cards as well.

To begin playing, you can create an account with 30 days access using your retail product key!

My last three MMO's I've bought is LoTRO, AoC and WAR. To be perfectly honest LoTRO has it's issues, but it's the MMO that has been the least of a letdown.

It seems I'm going to give the expansion pack a go when it releases. I remember there were a lot of annoying features and bugs which I'm sure are ironed out by now. All in all it's best MMO of three mentioned in my humble opinion.

  • KarahandrasKarahandras Member UncommonPosts: 1,703

I played for 2 months( was actually 45 days with gold edition and a 30 day sub), but i found that the character side was too basic, had very little variety, quite childish in places with some bad animations and overall didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the game.

But even though it's not the berst MMO i've played it's also not the worst(personally I put it somewhere in the middle)

Not really a love it or hate it MMO more  take it or leave it and one best trying and deciding for yourself

I would suggest contacting the relevant customer service to make sure as I had to set up my first months sub to go with my free time

interestng -- I've tried quite a few MMO's and if LOTRO"s animations are poor and *childish* and middle of the road I'd be curious what MMO's you've been playing that surpass it hehe.    Far better character creation abilities than WoW, Everquest, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, DAOC, AC, AoCand Star Wars graphically and animation wise imho.   Some of the animations were broken at release a bit but they did fix that (and broken animations sure beat the recent issues AoC had=P)  The only game out there that seems to be a bit better with graphical customization on the character end of things is WAR which is a newer game so I'd hope it did although that's based purely on screen shots.

The word *childish* may apply to hobbits but that concern definately suggests a complete ignorance as to who and what hobbits were -- they have been represented very well imho.

  • 0makol160makol16 Member Posts: 15

Well, instead of getting this game I picked up WAR...

  • blindside044blindside044 Member Posts: 250

(note: this is not a post bagging on WAR or 0makol16...it's a half-joke type thing so everyone calm down)

...so you have decided to be one of those "oh wow, I love this game. Why isn't this game bigger and why haven't I tried this sooner?!" people once you get around to trying LOTRO, that's fine.  :P

(I have seen more than an expected amount of those type of posts around the internets for this game... but as someone around here mentioned before, best kept secret  :D  )

I really liked this game, but then when I was going to buy it I found out a lot of my freinds switched to WAR and I didn't want to play alone, so I got WAR so i could play with them and in my opinion it's kinda like lotro graphics wise and has kinda similar game play.. but atleast i can say i played lotro and enjoyed my time playing the trial
