MMORPG.com Lord of the Rings Online Correspondent Malcom Calivar has written this report discussing the outfit system that makes it possible for LotRO players to change their appearances both in the facial models and in terms of gear.
If you've played MMORPGs long enough, then you know that one of the most important aspects in almost every game is personal achievements. One such personal achievement that players are always after is improving their avatars aesthetically. No doubt, in your quest to find the best gear, you may have come across certain pieces of equipment that you thought looked better than others. Unfortunately, as you reached higher levels, or as new expansions were released you found that the once beautiful arrangement of steel or linen you donned became vastly inferior to new pieces of equipment. Lord of the Rings: Online offers ways in which you can continue to upgrade your armor, while wearing what you want to wear. Whether you're a fan of the washed, torn robes you had at level 10, or the feathered hat you got as a quest reward, the outfit system will offer you hundreds of possible combinations to customize your character.

This was really a great feature they added. I wish they would add some more customization options for the faces though.
I think the system itself they implemented is a very welcome addition to the game, especially from an RP perspective. Unfortunately many of the faces themselves are kind of disappointing. This is purely a personal opinion and I am sure most people think they are great.
I have only truly been happy with three mmo avatars, two females and one male in SWG. I just really loved how my characters looked. Sometimes when I was bored or something I would spin them around and take some screenshots with something interesting in the background. In LOTRO, I still occasionally take screenshots but I make sure it's with my character facing away from me. Or better yet I zoom in and leave my character out of it entirely. I'm not sure what it is....if I knew I would say here. They just bug me though.
My Empire warrior priest in WAR looks very cool. I find myself looking at her a lot and taking screenshots too. The only drawback was her hair...I like long hair and she has her hair in a bun style that was the only one that appealed to me. Also you can't adjust individual features like in SWG, which kinda sucks, but she still looks cute.
There is definetly something wrong with the character models in LotRO! NOt sure what it is either though but it buggs the hell out of me as well. And apparently that is the reason none of my 14 real life friends could stand to play the game longer than an hour or so before deleting the entire game from thier system and shouting : "That game sucks!" ANd most of them are really hardcore Lord of the Rings fans! They can tell you the whole story of middle earth from the top of thier heads. They all went back to WoW and are now all playing WAR! (We all work together in real life)
I was a bit disappointed by the LotRO character models, frankly. There seemed to be basically one face for each race/gender combination. You can tweak these faces a bit, but all human males, for example, look like pups from the same litter, basically.
I would have like more variety in the faces -- but oh well. Nobody much sees avatar faces up close anyway.
The ability to wear the best gear possible, but display what you like to the rest of the world, however, is very nice. How often I wished for a feature like this in WoW, which has some of the ugliest, most outlandish and absurd-looking gear imaginable, especially at the higher levels.
The models seem to be the major complaint for this game (mine also includes the cruddy UI).
The models are not proportioned properly and even though you can change the outfit skin, you still have men with size 2 feminine waists, plate armor that is form fitting, females with hands the size of hammers and faces that only a Mom could love.
Wish they had the WETA models from the EA based LOTR games...then they would look incredible.
Moria seems to offer the same models, and even have some great looking new mobs <NOT> (like the Pink Brain monster in this Soulcaliber pose...YUCK)
At least there is always the landscapes....
That was really good, I've been dying for features such as these. And I got tired of seeing people running around in the same outfit. I might even consider buying this game... sigh. We are the bored.
The true masters of martial arts are rarely ever forthcoming about their abilities.
My biggest problem with LotRO models is the hair actually. Nearly all the styles do nothing for me and seem very stiff/plastic. Even EQ2 had better looking hairstyles and that's saying a lot because most of EQ2's hairstyles were all kinds of bizarre.
It sounds really shallow but it really ruins my enjoyment of the game if I'm not happy with how my character looks. The game world itself is absolutely gorgeous and the best I've seen out of a lot of MMO's I've played. Why can't they get the models right?
I am always amazed how Turbine delivers great new stuff .
The barber and cosmetic clothing are a MUST to have in any MMO.
But SWG I'm really annoyed how my character look is set by the designer (read sets) not by me.
Funny how WoW add the barber 5 years after launch.
If WoW would have the social clothing feature I would be 50% back.
(last 50% is get rid of BOP and redo loot distribution now based on guild rules and points)
I forsee after Mine of Moria, others studios will move to make their own huge underground world.
Then we might see Turbine doing underwater adventures or boats travels and combats...
Also Turbine is once again ahead of others as they are making their "Facebook MMO"...
