What do you do when you don't want to manage your game with GM's and real people. You design a free to play game and put a bloatware security program on the front end that hopefully will provide some security. Of course this rarely works well as F2P games have shown.
Now warhammer will be breaking new ground and placing punkbuster on your PC. Good old punkbuster that caused tons of issues in battlefield and other FPS games. Did it actually stop the hacks and cheats? Nope.
I am assuming this move is an attempt on mythics part to reduce manpower and increase profits. Guess time will tell if this is a good idea.

When they announced that they were going to use Punkbuster awhile ago I ranted about it to anyone who would listen. About how bad it is and how it doesn't stop anything at all on the games thats its currently in use on. It's rediculous that EA Mythic would decided to use a service that just doesn't work. I think it's a bad move and we will see a big botting/hacking following that will come from the fps games to the mmo games.

Punkbuster in WAR is old news. Iirc, it was announced in the same interview (on this site) where they announced the removal of those cities and classes.
In my opinion it's the same mentality as not having official forums (because the staff can't cope apparently) but I see now it's for the forthcoming influx of "Punkbuster screwed my system up" threads are the real reason they don't have them.
That may be so... But did you know its being reported as having been pushed this patch? If you note the title "punkbuster Inc". Incoming...

Yes, I did note the title. I'm just saying it was expected.
More cry threads from you please.
Avery, don't make me come over to the AoC forums buddy.

I'm no fanboi of punkbuster (glad to see your looking for trouble, great work) but I will disagree with you. I've played CoD 4 (which uses Punkbuster) since it released and I must say I was exceptionally pleased with the distinct lack of hackers, having come from CSS prior. I'm not sure if this is entirely attributable to Punkbuster, but it must be doing something right.
So I kinda think your full of shit, hell I hated Punkbuster too when I first had to get it, it was a pain in the ass to install and seems somewhat primitive in nature, but now I just update it every couple of months and off I go.
So whatever, it really isn't a big deal.

How does it work?
PunkBuster in Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning simply looks for anything suspicious that might be indicative of a player attempting to cheat or use exploits. It reports this information to Customer Support, who will then decide after a full investigation whether or not someone is breaking the rules. The most important thing to know is that it cannot do anything automatically and is only there to help our Customer Support create a more enjoyable game environment. It is also important to note that Punkbuster is just one of the tools in our arsenal to use against cheaters. We will continue to do what we do with DAoC and not just rely on Punkbuster. Our plan is that most people will never even know it's there!
So umm..i don't get the problem...it finds something suspicious, reports this to a csr, who will investigate it....
ummm...am i missing something? it doesnt do the banning or the work, just reports it.
yep... punkbuster runs flawless. Nobody ever has issues with it. Perfectly coded. Unhackable.
Kinda like war... perfect launch. Absolutely no errors playing my SH.

still waiting to see if you have the gall to answer my post further down, since you are consistently spouting doom and gloom everywhere you go
Remember that PunkBuster is only being used in WAR as a monitoring tool for tracking down abuse. It won't be automatically kicking players (often wrongfully) like you see in many FPS games. I too cringed when they made that announcement, but when they said that they'd only use it for monitoring purposes, I breathed a heavy sign of relief

Punkbuster runs as a process on your pc. It takes up memory. It interacts with other processes in your system and often checks those processes. It also sniffs traffic.
In the process this can and has caused system instability, crashes and lag.
By passing punkbuster is as easy as running your hack at a root level (think Root Kit). There are other ways that are more complex and involve a second linux/unix based pc and a hub. No need to get techy here...
The reason mythic is using it as narc only and will investigate reports is because its unreliable and easy to spoof.
Any other questions Einstien? Want to get techy... Lets go
thats not what your original post said...you originally said because they were to lazy to do it themselves, now you are taking another tactic...anything else?
So basically all I see is that people are upset because they wont be able to hack or bot as easy in WAR. Not sure why everyone feels the need to cheat all the time in games how does that make you feel better than other players when you cheat to win. Anyone who complains about anti hacking software is a cheater IMO.
Everytime there was a ban wave in WOW for the same stuff people would always get upset when they got caught and cry on the forums about it that they were innocent. Will there be people that find ways to get around it? Im sure there will be but it will still keep the majority of people honest not enough to ruin the game. WOW just won a lawsuit against glider and thats great as it sucks when you did a BG with 35-36 people botting all following the same paths.
I have already seen this a little bit in WAR where people try to AFK in scenarios and I report them. If WAR becomes a game where there are 10 out of 12 people AFK in a scenario it will ruin it for the honest folks and I fully support any anti cheat software.

I think punkbuster bogs down performance and it doesn't even do what it is designed to do, namely stop the cheaters.
I know some folks who are game developers and they hack games as fun/hobby, and they don't feel it is cheating. It's weird, and I don't understand their perspective at all. To me if you are running code that is not native to the program that gives you an advantage that another player doesn't have that is cheating. But they don't see it that way....
Anyway, cheating ruins competitive gaming.
They are lazy. Nothing takes the place of human intervention when it comes to catching someone cheating. no program made can replace a gm on the spot. Expecting a program to catch cheaters is lazy.
A real hacker is hard to catch. Wow script kiddies running some program on thier pc are easy to catch. Good hacks are rarely posted or published. The gold farming industry uses them in house all the time.
And guess what... it takes a johnny on the spot gm to catch and stop them.
So what do you suggest?
A hundred GM's on every server just looking for things that look like cheating?
Using software to help detect cheaters is smart. Then the people can focus on the investigation.
You still dont get it... If punkbuster gets bypassed nothing gets reported. Nothing gets reported cheaters are free to do what they want.
Do you see any other major mmo's using an anti cheat program? wow? EQ2? LOTRO? can you guess why?
Well a few hackers is gonna happen but glider made botting as mainstream as WOW made MMO's so when everyone is doing it the game is ruined. I have seen spawn points with litterally 30+ people all jumping over and over and I have also seen 30+ people all running the same exact path to their deaths in BG's. If it were just 1-2 people no big deal it still sucks but you can deal with it. If its 80-90% of the people playing then its a severe problem.
When you are talking about a game with 200K+ players that is way to many to expect them to hire enough GM's to track that many people by themselves.
If it is truely a system hog like people say then that sucks but can be fixed. If you que for a scenario and see your whole team botting and your the only one playing thats a much bigger problem. Which would you rather have?

Glider also just got the crap sued out of them. human intervention did this. Not some program.
well Im off to play... SOR
Have fun... Hope they fix the bugs soon

Yes I do WOW uses a program called Warden to catch cheaters and it works very well. Noone even notices it running in the backround and yes people do bypass it but eventually most get caught due to updates for Warden. Will Punkbuster get bypassed by some ofcourse it will but it will keep control on most of the players. Blizzard has probably banned more accounts for hacking and botting than most companys will ever get subs for.

Actually, WoW does. It's called Warden http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warden_(software)
It works much the same as Punkbuster.

Have not played wow since 2004. stand corrected. Apparently warden was inneffective from stopping glider. Blizz had to take em to court.
thanks for proving my point
Pb is great for taking out little cunts using downloadable hacks. The real hackers doing the work themselves are way harder to catch... but there are only few of them(they are also cunts)
And the whole issue with pb - The process running in the background isn't really using any memory. Some people might have issues with stability... but that might be because of crappy 3rd party software. I've never had any issues with pb.
