I would have to say my fav strategy game would have to be X-Com.  Graphics are horrible, but the game play was awesome.

Yes it is. Its a turn based strategy game. In the same way the Total War games are, except it doesn't have a real time strategy screen.

Although my take would have to be either the command & conquer games, excluding Generals (didn't really get into it) or Total Annihilation.

i think the Total Wars have all been highly overrated.  I bought them based on the main game site reviews which all score them very high and praise them like crazy, but they just arent that fun to me.  I guess i cant stand the slow pace, and i'm sure that incorporates more strategy, but moving units across the map takes so damn long it gets really old after awhile.  I got Rome:Total War due to all the hype and i was hoping it'd be much better than the previous ones, but its still feels very tedious imo.  I guess i'm accustomed to the StarCraft style rts's more than the pure strategically based ones like the Total Wars.  And the fact that you can zoom into units that look pretty good while fighting just doesnt seem to excite me as much as the reviewers seem to get excited.  I'm not saying Rome:Total War is a bad game, its good, but imo its not as great as the hype the reviews i read make it out to be.

I still think StarCraft is king.  I didnt think C&C:Generals was bad but i have a beef with their movement animations in every C&C.  I thought Rise of Nations was really good, Age of Mythology was ok but i thought Titans was lame despite all the hype on it.  WarCraft3 is ok too, but i dont like it nearlly as much as i loved StarCraft.  Ground Control2 wasnt bad, but i like some base building which Ground Control2 didnt have altho the tactical play was fun.  And i've never been a huge fan of the AoK's or AoE's, but enough of one to buy them and play them for a few months or so on and off.  I just wish Blizzard kept making expansions for StarCraft, cant say enough for how well that game was done for its time.

Sid Miers Alpha Centurai has to be the most indepth turn based strategy game ever followed very closely by Starcraft: Broodwar in the RTS genre.

My vote's for X-Com, the original one.  Greatest strategy game ever made, hands down.

Give it a try if you haven't, you will be surprised, and then you won't be able to stop playing.

Looking forward (cautiously) to: Age of Conan, Dark Solstice, Armada Online.

    Will soon try: Guild Wars

Overall: Amazed and bewhildered at the current sad state of the artform of gaming.

Rome Total War looks AMAZING!image I can not wait to get this game. I have been holding off purchasing it until I get my computer upgraded.image

    I really enjoy RTS games.

    Age of Mythology

    Command and Conquer Generals

    Warcraft III

Although my list is short, I have spent many hours playing them to my hearts content. I was a late bloomer to online games. I give special thanks to my boyfriend for letting me see the light!image

Added: Forgot to list which was my favorite. I have to choose AoM from my small list. I could never get sick of that game. I also love making my own maps. Goodtimes.

i would have to say the best strategy ive played is Rise of Nations because it plays like a zoomed in version of civilization--which didnt appeal to me because it was slow althoh i liked the economics--and plays like empire earth.

Obviously both Warcraft and Starcraft are overwhelmingly considered the best RTSs ever seeing how they pretty much define the genre.

Just ask some random guy on the street what an example of an RTS game would be and they would most likely say either Starcraft or Warcraft.

My vote goes for Civilization III Conquests with the latest patches (less corruption with large empires). It still has too much randomness in the unit fights though.

So looking forward to Civilization IV under development.

Nobody mentioned Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War, so I will. Rise of Nations is right up there with it...

Those Rome: Total War screens look great. Might have to pick that one up. The battles look epic!

As long as you are playing another person (multiplayer), the Combat Mission games. But of course not many people have even heard of them.

Gamespy- This is, quite simply, one of the best games of any genre available for the PC.

Gamespot- If ever there were a showstopper of a wargame, this is it.

UGO- ....pathological attention to details and simulation accuracy, .....this is the best tactical WW2 wargame there is, .....some may be put-off by the novelty of the we-go move system, but they're wrong; it works superbly.

I'm an old fan of the X-Com series so I'd say that, tho the series only degraded untill it reached a bottom low with X-Com:Interceptor.

As far as Heroes of Might & Magic goes, well, I can't stand that game. The first one was fine, the second was a decent sequel but from the third on it just plain sucked. Might & Magic on the other hand was an awsome series (even the latter one with simplistic quests, amazing how much time you could spend on a game with hardly any content or interaction) but the Xeen pair was the best... tho that's not RTS.

I don't think there is one startegy game I like the most... I played the original Civilization for ages, Civilization3 caught me with the underwater and space colonization. Age of Wonders and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic were mucho fun for a long time, was a good blend of the good parts of Heroes of Might & Magic with some Civilization tweaks.

But all in all, I'm a FPS player and still a diehard fan of OFP ::::02::

Number one has to be Civilization 2 (haven't played 3) just due to the sheer number of options: tech tree, age advancement, diplomacy, trade, spies, etc. etc. etc.
  • BolkaBolka Member Posts: 14

As far as strategy is concerned, Civilization III is definately my first, by a huge margin, only followed by Civilization II way behind.

Then Total War, I haven't played Rome, but I played Shogun and Medieval, and they are the only RTS I played and I found worthy of the 'S' in 'RTS.' I haven't tried them all, but usually I found RTS to have a lot of real time, and virtually no strategy, at least not for the obstinate player.

    So here it goes:

    1) Civ III

    2) Civ II

    3) Total War

There were quite a few titles mentionned in this thread that I really liked, but I don't think they apply to strategy. XCom was indeed great, Master of Orion II was a lot of fun, so was Master of Orion I, actually Master of Magic was probably the best of Steve Barcia's games.
