A New Hope: Darkfall, sandbox mmo due this year

taelrutaelru Member Posts: 28

Hey guys,

Ive been looking around for a new mmo since, ..oh, before you were born ..  :)  well, since cu anyways!

there is this new mmo coming out soon called Darkfall. it's a sandbox mmo (which means you are free to do anything, no classes only skills, no instances, most stuff is crafted and it's open pvp - no artificial battlegrounds).

the actual combat mechanic seems more like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, which is arguably the best single player rpg ever made. you actually have to lift your shield, aim your bow, spells, etc. So Im thinking it will be a mix between swg and oblivion, whch will make for a helluva game!

[btw, it looks and seems to play nothing like wow..thank god]

plus the community seems a bit more 'thoughtful' like the swg vets. i think the kiddies will stick to the linear mmo's since sandbox requires a bit of planning and imagination.

anyway, Im no expert on this game..I just found it myself a few weeks ago, so I'll post this little tidbit from the darkfall forums:

----------------------------------------

-It has no zones, it is a big world with plenty of open space, not a linear path or direction, really go on an adventure and do what you wish.

-You can craft any item in game and invent items so you can become a fully fledged trader, it has a player driven economy. You can really gain reputation of being an excellent crafter.

-There is no radar, that means only trackers would be able to find you, im not even sure track is in. Also from what i gather there are no name tags or health bars. You actually can effectively hide behind objects.

-There is also a lot of PVE, lots of crafting options, huge world to explore with various caverns, caves, underwater places, moutains, forests, deserts, strongholds, lairs, factions, quests, you get the drift.

-PVP is not consentual, people may attack you anytime. The main aspects of the game to do with PVP is player city wars and ship battles, you have to remember though this is a huge world, the scale of the pvp battles may be big in certain areas, but these battles are on a small part of land when compared to the whole world, it has been stated that the world is very large.

You will just have to be on your toes when someone attacks you, if someone decides to try and take your life, stand up for yourself and just try and do your best to slay them, you dont lose lots from dying in darkfall

(gear only has minor advantages, so it is nice to have a very high quality weapon but people will still beat you if you arnt good at aiming, practice makes perfect)

skill at actually aiming (there is no autolock) with your spells or weapons will decide if you are the victor or not. Also because gear isnt a massive factor and there are no levels, it means it will be easier on the casual players, they wont feel left out.... the game is less to do with grinding levels and more to do with choosing what proffesions you want for your character and what role your character will be doing. You also never have to reroll a character if you want to change skills because there are no classes any race can get any skill.

-You can create a city but that doesnt mean you HAVE to go to war, perhaps if you do others a favor with trade they will want you on their side ofcourse, war is a good way to make money. Some people may decide to attack you for the land, but get a grip of yourself these are harsh times.

-There are no safezones in darkfall, BUT there are factions. So even though someone could kill you in the town, if you have good standing with the faction then the guards will stick up for you.

May the Force be with you, always.

The game sounds great, but non-consentual PvP absolutely turns me off. I do enjoy PvP, but when I wish to participate. I have no interest in being ganked when I am trying to complete a quest or harvest a resource by a group of smack-talking-punks at the expense of MY entertainment. If there is a change to how PvP is engaged, or if there is a last minute addition of a PvE server, then I may look into the game further.  I am envious of you true PvP'ers...the game seems encompass most of the elements I would enjoy in an mmo.

Darkfall sounds very interesting and I'm glad to see another sandbox mmo based on skills and not levels however two things put me off, one being another fantasy setting, I know this is the most popular theme for mmos but I'm burnt out from them.  The other thing putting me off is that I hear it is an open world pvp game.

Nothing I hate more than having a gang of high level (or skills in this case) players constantly ganking/killing you while trying to grind/quest etc.  I'm not anti pvp I enjoy it but I like to choose when I want to do it.  Which is something I like about galaxies rather then be stuck in a pve/pvp only server.

I agree with Kazara. I envy you pvpers.

The game sounds great on paper, and when and if it releases I'm really looking forward to playing it.

However, that said, we really haven't seen much of it (and a shame OP  posted the you tube video link, that really sucks and the full video was much better) and won't know if Aventurine can deliver until sometime before the end of the year.

Hopefully the wait is almost over.

yeah I know what you mean about the open pvp factor.

for me i like it since i was always a declared reb in swg precu anyways .. and i hardly ever ran into trouble while grinding on dant or running missions ..and I loved the edgey feeling walking into theed with a group of rebel friends and terrorizing the locals :)

i think that since the world is so big that soloing wont be a problem..you can go places you wont be found...just like swg.

of course, if you walk into coronet in your shiny new stormtrooper outfit, alone, then you're asking for trouble :)  and it will probably be the same in darkfall as well... there will be places you should only go with a posse

it will be intersting to see how the open pvp goes .. im sure the darkfall devs wont allow it to degenerate into a grief fest because thats no fun and everyone will leave. they say it's been 8 years in development so hopefully theyve thought of that!

Eww.  More elves and orcs.  I'm playing WoW right now and I'm getting kind of tired of the medival fantasy genre.  Miss Pre NGE, that's why I've been watching the Crusades MMO that's in alpha getting closer to beta, from what I've heard.  It's got skill trees, different planets, space travel and alot of freedoms.

Check it out if that sounds interesting.  http://www.vizualfxstudios.com/crusades/

If you havn't heard of Darkfall by now, you live in a cave.

Be that as it may...you honestly think that this could replace pre-cu swg? First off, it's ugly as a bull-dog's scrotum. Second...it's medieval phantasy. Don't we have enough of these games already?

Not gonna jump into just any old sandbox, especially when there could be a generous quantity of cat shit just under the surface.

I'll stick with pre-cu SWG. It might not be quite finished, but I can play it, and it gets better every day....why replace something that's still able to be played?

I remember back in 1999, folks kept asking me if I was stockpiling food. I always answered, "No, I'm stockpiling ammo and making a list of people who are stockpiling food"

Heh... you're certainly not the only one who suspects that this game might not be able to deliver on some (or most, or all) of its promises, given that there are so many factors riding against it  - small indie inexperienced dev team attempting possibly the most ambitious MMO project to date, years of development and little or nothing to show the web community.

If you're interested to see the true extent of 'debate' between the flaming disbelievers and the rabid faithful, check out the Darkfall forums here at MMORPG.com, can make for some funny reading at times. Basically it boils down to those who believe that despite any concrete evidence to support his claims, the Head of Development's word is gospel, the game is feature complete and moving into open beta any minute now, contains all of what they originally promised, and will be the greatest sandbox game ever created...and those who don't.

But like I said, have a look over the hundreds of threads in the forums for yourself and who knows... perhaps you too will be convinced.

I really couldn't care less what mmo setting is used as long as the game is a quality work with the gaming elements similar to what SWG pre-CU had. Pre-CU had so much - -  for the hard core PvPcombatants, to the PvE and Rp'ers, to those that enjoyed comptetive crafting and the player economy, to those that enjoyed the very expressive social life in a cantina. Players could do as much or as little of any profession they desired. The game was truly an immersive world many of us 'lived' in.

I did not join SWG at launch because it was Star Wars, I joined because of the seemingly endless game possibilities that particular mmo world offered. I could enjoy playing an elf every bit as much as a Twi'lek if the game is GOOD (and has consentual PvP). With luck, some of you may be finding that game soon.

    déjà vu

They've been shouting about having all this shit for years, you become immune to it eventually. I won't be getting excited about this until I see reviews and actual boxed copies in store, until then they can keep their hype machine to themselves ta.

When was this screen taken???    reason i ask is i haven't played for a long time and those icons look like pre-CU (the first) which members of the guild i was in showed me back in 2005

  • WharmasterWharmaster Member Posts: 234

that screen was taken last night. But that IS pre-cu.

Unfortunately, mmorpg.com has rules against me saying much more than that.

If Darkfall was Sci-Fi I would join in.

So it looks like it will be Earthrise...  Or I'll stick with StarQuest.

    And that is why...

Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.

I agree... I would definitely be more excited about Darkfall if it was Sci-fi... But since it is yet another overdone fantasy game, I'm just "meh" about it.

I can't quite understand the love of fantasy in this genre, as sci-fi is so much more prevelant in mainstream media. I probably wouldn't mind fantasy if it wasn't so over saturating the market, but overall I think that sci-fi is much cooler, and fantasy is, for a lack of a better term, kind of gay.

So I'm with you, I'm waiting for Earthrise.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Indeed.  That is what is so baffling.  Fantasy is tops in MMO's, but Sci-Fi rules TV and Movies.  Though I think for books, it is about a 50/50.

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. This game is just like Shadowbane on paper. And Shadowbane was a great game on paper. It just sucked in reality. Lets hope that Darkfall manages to be as little like Shadowbane in reality. I have my doubts though.

As long as you paid for your copy of SWG and have your original disks, you can create your own screenshots just like that one too, ya know.

For those still talking about Darkfall and have been living in an mmo-less cave, I will simply say, "Don't get your hopes up before you do your homework."

  • toddzetoddze Member UncommonPosts: 2,150

Darkfall by the end of the year? I highly doubt it. theres no release date set and every mmo release date gives ample time from when they announce the release date to when that date arrives. its 10/6/08 now so I dont see them releasing it in 08. If a date is not set by the end of october then I can guarntee you wont see Darkfall in 08.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
    Now Playing: N/A
    Worst MMO: FFXIV
    Favorite MMO: FFXI
