Yes, I said it. Everyone praises the community in this game above all because everyone is so polite and friendly and willing to help, not something that is common in the MMO sphere. Nothing wrong with all that, but the majority of us don't hang out in church to have a good time (no offense to the holy rollers.)
Ryzom died, was resurrected, only to die and, by some miracle, rise again. This, I think, has driven away all the normal people from the game. What you have left is a hardcore cache of crazies who make this game their entire life -- THEIR LIFE. How is the normal player, coming from another game like WoW (much maligned in Ryzom for some reason) supposed to relate to these people?
I'll give you an example of the kind of nonsense I'm talking about. Recently, some people on the SA forums discovered the game and started a new guild. They called it Goons of Jena. But OH NOES, another guild already exists by the name Guardians of Jena who thought that the Goons were taking the piss. They got their feelings so hurt by the fact that they actually went to the CSRs (moderators) about it and, after asking around, nobody's seen the Goons since.
Note: I am not part of or affiliated in any way with either of these guilds, not that it matters. What matters is that stupid petty issues like this come to the attention of Big Brother at all. I have never played a game where political correctness matters so much to people that it is actually enforced by the higher ups.
Second example: Someone in universal chat starts relating a funny work anecdote about their technical support job. Something about some guy who's motherboard caught fire. Nothing objectionable, or obscene, just some people having a casual chat. A CSR butts in the middle of the story to say that the chat was off-topic and should stop... I can assure you, it was in no way interfering with the normal flow of chat, which would've been dead silent otherwise. But in Ryzom we must only talk about Ryzom, sieg heil.
Note: Ryzom doesn't have an role playing channel, nor have I ever even met an RPer in the game (although I'm sure they exist somewhere). Uni-chat is widely regarded by most to be the general channel because its the only channel where you can talk to the whole game.
I'd like to say that these two instances are not the typical experience in the Ryzom universe, but they are. I have played the game for about a year, on and off, and there's a reason why their player base remains so small. It is way to easy to offend or to otherwise overstep their ridiculous social proprieties and end up shunned. Mention WoW? That's a shunning. Criticize Ryzom? That's a shunning! Enjoy PVP? Shunning! Riske or off-color jokes (even though the community is mostly 25+), trash talking, your mom, etc... anything but the weather is a shunning. Now, I'm not a troll, and I actually have a low tolerance for assholes, but this is effete society gone too far. It's your grandma's MMO. You need a healthy mix of personalities to form a healthy society, and right now we don't have that.

We have guild chat for all the crazy stuff... and sometimes, the local chat gets pretty special as well...
You're obviously putting all the apples in the same basket.
And the Goons of Jena thing seems to me like a misinterpreted bad coincidence due to ignorance. Shit does happen.
Personnally, I'm not factionning because the outpost politics can get pretty nasty. But outside of it, I generally enjoy the Ryzom community... like 98,5% of the time.

Well, that's the issue. I have run around a bit in Ryzom and tried to meet and talk to people. You just can't engage them in conversation beyond the normal sort of church talk, where everyone is awkwardly polite. The craziest stuff I've ever seen happen in uni chat involved Nysha making hyper-sexual remarks and *gasp* some other people playing along. I usually hate attention-whoring like that, but it was a breath of fresh air compared to the crap that normally goes on in uni. And as I recall, Nysha (who went by some other name previously, I think) eventually got a stern talking to and was eventually forced to kowtow to the powers that be.
Universe is the help channel for new players, NOT a global chat channel. So the CSRs have every right to tell you to (politely) shut up if you're talking about stuff that doesn't belong in there.
This, however, is why I find it astounding that in all the incarnations of Ryzom, not one dev thought it would be a good idea to add another global channel.
It would be a mistake tp judge the Ryzom community based on uni chat.
Did you check region chat? Ever ask for a rez in region chat?

"Universe" should be renamed to something more practical and descriptive like "newbie help" and have a real universal chat that is OOC (but not indecent).
Most of the CSRs seem to be okay, but they seem to be given almost carte blanche and there have always seem to be a corruptible few. I think back in the day I encountered the famous Themis GM who gave Funcom a bad rep with AOC. Luckily Themis is out of the picture, but they could still use stricter guiding principles.
Outside of keeping public chat channels kid friendly I wish the CSRs would take a lesson from EVE and let the community police itself.
I always wanted Ryzom to succeed because it was originally a story centric and skill based game but I don't know that any of the owners have had a good vision of customer service and cultivating strong online community relationships (beyond the central cliques that already dominated the game in its dwindling days).
i dont see your point(s) tbh
uni channel could indeed do with being renamed, however there is a big message box that pops up the first time you look at it that states quite clearly what it's for. If you dont like it dont use it. Have you conversation about motherboards or whatever in GC, or tell's, not that hard
similarly goons of jena is a) not a good name for a guild, and b) certainly reasonable for guardians of jena to raise a ticket about it i think. Ryzom is not Eve, if you dont like the idea of a nice friendly community, and using chat channels for their purpose then maybe the problem is with you? The community is not crappy - your assumption that you can turn up and ignore it is the crappy part. sorry.
Goons of Jena is not a bad name. Goon means something completely different to people from SA it's a group identity.
Taking the name away might as well be discrimination on a group. Sure it's the Internet and you never see the guys flesh or creed but it's still group discrimination.
As for ruining the name of Guardians of Jenna it wouldn't anyone who has been around MMOs for any amount of time will instantly reconize the differance between a goon and some other group name.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
As said Uni is meant for Q&A so the fact that off topic chatter is even allowed is a consession at best and an inability to enforce the rules at worst.
As for the matter of the guild name I have no idea what the motivtion behind GoJ 2 was for choosing their name I'm sure they'll tell every one it wasn't meant s any kind of insult to the original GoJ but even if that is true there was obviously as possibiliy for confusion with two names that were that similar.
Sadly I'm not surprised that two examples like this are cause for some people to paint everyone in a community with the same brush. Unfortunately there will allso be people who'll believe you when you call the Ryzom community crappy and by doing so insult even the people who have done nothing to deserve it. Most people in the game will go out of their way to help others and to expect them to take abuse like this time and time again without sometimes retaliating would be a mistake...
As for "mature" talk in Uni being allowed because most of the players are 25+, I know for a fact that there are minor payering and some players have childeren so maybe it's a good ide to keep whatever chatter is going on in public channel is kept "moderate" it not like it's hard for adults to show to some restraint and selfcontrol...
To clarify something, guardians of Jena did not ticket Goons of jena, we couldnt give a crap who names their guild what. I did hear some people moan about goons but only people outside of our guild asking whether it was us having a joke or someone trying to wind us up.
uni chat is not general chat, CSR should just mute people instead imo, but I gues politly asking ppl to stfu would have been nicer no?
astonished that i seen this as a topic in a thread about ryzom, I had always loved the community, helpful, heavy roleplaying, hope this hasnt changed, it was one of the things that I really loved about it.
playing eq2 and two worlds
is this the same goons that are in eve online? I dont think anyone liked em there either.
playing eq2 and two worlds
HAHA! while I think Ryzoms community is great for the most part.
It does seem a few of them have jumped right out of a Seasame Street episode.
They are extremely tight assed and get butt hurt easily if you say anything bad lol.
Dude if you wanna hang with some people that don't give a shit and have a chat similar to a college dorm atmosphere send me a mail and ill give you my avatar info.
Playing: Nothing
Looking forward to: Nothing
seems to me that the OP has some pretty slim pickings to create a complaint thread about
is Ryzom chat all sweetness and light - nope
is it vastly superior to any other MMO that I've played - yep
I don't think the fact that you find the community bad makes the community bad. the reality is if you have a nice polite playerbase...people complain. if you have a weird "geeky" playerbase...people complain. and if you have a bunch of smacktalking pvp exploiters who cheat...kill...then belittle....people complain. there's tons of mmorpg's outthere...many with the exact same theme...so if each game has it's differences with regards to community this is a goodthing....as hopefully there's a game for everyone. don't like the community..or the game? then go play something els.
The Universe chat was created for Q&A and as someone pointed out there is a box that pops up ant tell you that. How hard is that to understand.
The CSR's are very lienent but you have no idea how one little statement can steam roll fast and out of control and that is why they watch it.
There are kids playing so does it hurt so much to act semi human.
As far as church talk I have not seen it. We are nice so sorry if it offends the OP but I am sure there is a game that will fullfill your type of playing.
Hehe, as far as the WoW talk sorry but every game I have been in has the same feelings. In Beta of LOTRO that is all I heard was WoW jokes so don't limit it to Ryzom.
Ryzom does have the best community there is, but there will always be the 10% that is not happy unless they are making other people misserable or unhappy. I guess it is the internet that allows people to act like the way they secretly want to act but since real life will not allow them this is where they can be themselves.
It is a game just enjoy it if you don't like the chat close it out. You don't have to see it at all. You want to chat, go to MSN or a chat room.
As far as names go well that is up to the staff. They were trying to be funny I guess with Goons but did not amuse me. Just made me think, "stupid" but that is my opinion.
Yes there are quite a large RP community but guess you don't look. But since you think it should be in Uni you won't see them there they are probably doing it in the chat they are suppose to be doing it in. As far as a general chat, it isn't necessary in a game. The ones that regard Uni channel as their channel to do what they like, don't read rules, don't care about rules and think the world shines on only them and the H with the rest of the world.
It is a bit funny that someone would complain cause a community is not offensive and is to nice. Never thought I would see that.
If you've been around in the internet for a while most people develop a habit with pop-up boxes.
Close them immediately.
Seriously, how hard is it to name chat channels something appropriate? Changing 'universe' to 'newbie help' would clarify exactly what it is for and reduce a significant portion of the unwanted conversation.
As for community, it is never a static entity. Say it is always anything is a load of propaganda (for good or ill).
If you close pop up boxes with out ever reading that is your problem.
As for a chat channel, it would be a really bad idea as people don't know when to shut up.
Even games with a OOC channel they can still be censored so what is the advantage.
Why change the name when everyone tells people when they chat it is for Q&A.
Anyhow to each its own.
Going back into Ryzom to relax.
You all have a good day now
Most people do close pop up boxes immidiately (usually without even reading them) which is why most people only learn about that "nice" trojan they've installed when they have someone look at their rig because it's become so slow.....
Just because most people do this or that doesn't mean most people are right...
I close pop up boxes when browsing the web but not when playing a game. Especially if I'm new to the game.

The problem is that it is an established community which makes it hard for noobs to fit in. They need a fresh server launch.
All I can say to that is:
Entirely untrue.
Newbes are nowhere more welcome and accepted and helped than on Ayts.
´Nuff said.

Do you dare to adapt?
There is little doubt taht one of the biggest weaknesses of ryzom is the lack of a universal chat for players to just shoot the breeze.......I too was a little put off by the universal chat police that would butt into every single topic to remind people that Universal was for Ryzom Q&A only.....Sorry but alot of us enjoying chatting in MMOs and it is one of the main reasons why some of us play........The topic has come up hundreds of times in chat so obviously it is important to many people.....The problem is that too many of the veteran players give the appearance that they just want all the new players to go away so they can have things the way they want them.......Overall the community is very good, often very helpful and well informed, but a little too critical of newer players trying to learn the game and have fun.
Take the Hecatomb TCG What Is Your Doom? quiz.
Try Region chat, that is what most players use for general chit chat with other players in that area. Universe is for Q&A as clearly stated, which is to 'help' new players with any questions they have about the game. Which means it's best not to be bogged down with people talking about what they had for breakfast this morning.

i was reported in lotro for using a smiley in a chat channel. now that is over the top.. not wanting to hear about some baseball game, or how cool your processor is on uni or region is perfectly acceptable.
If you are enjoying the game is very easy to you know, talk about the game. If you have a free account and are a bit bored then its easy to spam game channels with out of game stuff. which, erm people dont like
if that's hard to understand its probably time to consider trying another game
