What if WAR was $5 a month?

well in most games, developers pay the publisher, so there is not a whole lot of profit made off of gameboxes for mmorpgs, their primary income is in subscriptions

$15 a month is fine. Computers and games are getting less and less expensive.
In 1993, a good new computer cost $3,000-$4,000 and AAA games cost $60-$70. Now it's more like $1,500-$2,000 for a decent gaming PC and, considering inflation, the games are less expensive($50).
People never really know how good they've got it, do they? Always ready to complain.

No one is Complaining just wondering why none of these big games have not tried a different approach to the market.

they probably did allot of research and found that e.g. cutting the price by 1/3 does no necesseraly mean x3 the subs.
    its inilastic.

No but I would be willing to bet that 3 times more people might try it.

If you want to pull people away from what they precieve as the best then you have to offer them a better deal.

Then you let your game speak for its self.

they probably spent thousands of pounds on customer research and they have chosen the best option from the research they did, and might is not good enough in the business world. they need active subs...x3+ subs to make the deal worth while..

also x3 subs will mean they need x3 the servers which means the costs goes up by x3 and more staff is needed  which means less profit....get what i mean. so in the end they will be loosing money

I see what you are saying.

Maybe more along the lines of what this guy said.

"As for 5 bucks a month. isn't bad... but what you have to take into account is box sales. Personally I would pay less up front for the box with 1 month free rather then pay full price for the box and less per month afterward.

That way I pay less to try the game.. but more over time if I like it. WAR will obviously be fun to some rather then others .. so to know what part of the community will stay you'll need to have a lot more people try it. A free trial would be nice.. or ultimately a low first month purchase... I think that would get the community hopping with people that actually like playing the game."

Lowering the up front price I think would get a lot more people to give it a try.

yes, lowering box cost will be a better idea than lowering the monthly cost.

I think this is more a question of current value, and has nothing to do with past costs.

Look at it this way, almost every single pay to play MMO costs $15 a month, but in no way does every pay to play MMO have the same quality.  Lets compare it to food. You wouldn't pay the same price for a cheeseburger as you would a lobster tail would you? So why do we pay the same price for a high quality MMO as we do a crappy one?

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

you have to ubnderstand, that these games use hundreds of servers, with tons of bandwidth. Both of which need to be paid for, as well as dev salaries. Then you have your IP costs (aka paying Games Workshop for the rights to use their license of Warhammer),  Then you have advertising, distribution, production, maintenance. on top of that, you also have Customer service. So while it may seem easy to chop the price, you have to look at what that price is paying for. Free games counter this buy having companies by virtual space to advertise their products. I would gladly pay more for a monthly sub than to see an alternative income (aka ads) in game.

And you bring up Guildwars, well guild wars gives you new content by forcing you to pay another 50-60 per expansion, while most mmorpgs add content here and there for free under the subscription model, while the really huge updates or expansion get bought.

Yeah, but every MMORPG developer at least wants to believe their game is worthwhile and competitive. Charging less than $15/month would be sort of like publicly admitting: "Hey, our game is inferior, so we're charging less for it."

And just because you think a game's crappy doesn't mean its developers or current players agree. Unlike cheeseburgers and lobster tails, absolute value is far less clearly defined when it comes to MMORPG subscription fees.

Ironically, some of the worst games on the market (post-CU/NGE SWG for example) not only charge $15/month, but also strongly encourage people to own multiple accounts.

EVE's a good game, but if you want more than one character (that actually gains skills), you're going to be paying at least $30 a month.

By that yardstick, $15/month is a bargain.

$15 has been the standard since Everquest in 97. Was like 10-12 bucks for games like UO and Meridian 59 before that.

I'm not sure that the OP was trying to figure out a way to bring back the people that have already left, but, your statement here is true.  You play what you enjoy playing, and I, for one, don't make that decision based on the montly fee.  (I mean, unless it was something ridiculous like 50 bucks a month or something PER account.  I have a family, so we pay $30-$45 USD per month for EACH game that we sub to already.)

If we're specifically speaking about Warhammer...I wouldn't go back after this month even if it were FREE, but that's just me.  It's not my type of game, and I didn't particularly enjoy it.

To suggest a company start OFF with really low prices, though, well...I'm not sure that's a great idea either, because most people believe that you "get what you pay for," and that would cause some suspicion about the game's quality and ability to maintain updates, hardware repairs, etc.

Mythic charges $15 USD a month, so they are going to get compared to the other games that charge the same.  If they charged $5 a month, people would compare them to Runescape.  And while I'm sure Warhammer in a comparison to Runescape would, of course, look amazing....it's a bit tougher competition being compared to all the other games with the standard sub fees.

Let's think about it like this....

Do you really WANT people that prefer other games and gaming styles to swarm your game because "it's cheap?"  No...probably not.  You want people playing the games YOU are playing, because like YOU, they ENJOY them and find that particular style of game compelling.  I, for sure, wouldn't want to play with other people who didn't really play the games I play out of a love for the games, but because ..."Meh, well...it's cheap."

The sad thing is, alot of players only know SWG by name.  To them, WoW is "The MMO to end all MMOs".  Which is ironic, since most of them have only played WoW.

You should have kept reading, since what he was trying to say is that although he acknowledge that there is an open world PvP/RvR, players won't use it, and prefer to do the scenarios instead.

So unless Mythic find a way to make the open RvR interesting and worthwile, this game is just like another GW.........and is not far off the mark.

I hope I clear it up for you.

    WoW: Nov. 23, 2004

    EQ2: Nov. 8, 2004

Roughly at least.  So yes, EQ2 came before WoW.

I can't say for everyone else, but it would certainly help with me. Not to the extent im hurting for money, it's the ethics behind it. If i'm not having a decent amount of fun in a game and paying a monthly fee, it feels quite wrong to me and eventually turns me off. It doesn't necessarily determine whether I quit it or not, but it certainly factors in. I get a very strong Guild Wars-esque feel from this game as well, I think it is the presentation, not necessarily the mechanics. I played Guild Wars for quite awhile, simply because it was free, and it seemed like amazing value, though enjoying PVE+PVP I eventually left.

When it comes down to it however, I would rather WAR have been an incredibly addicting game for 20-25$...As opposed to what it is, which has already caused me to cancel my sub for 15$.

It's really a sad state of affairs when I think of it, I am willing to overpay for something that seems so dried up. While it makes sense in an economics arena, it's quite disheartening as a gamer.

It simply costs too much to play a new game anymore......Figure 50 bucks to buy it then at least a month or two to get a feel...By the time you decide whether you like it or not its a hundred bucks sometimes....The more I think about it the more I like the Guild Wars approach.....The lifetime sub that loTRO offers is a good idea also but in reality I have only played one game for more than a year so lifetime sub would be a waste of money for me .......I have also played several that looked good initially then got boring fast (eq2, lotro, wow, etc) but I paid for 6 months and played for 2-3 lol........

Hmm, don't know what server you are on, but try Ironclaw or Darklands during peak hours, and you will find plenty of open world RvR.
