UO was the first and best.  No other game was able to deliver the total package package to me.

A long, long, long time ago, back when my hometown in Podunk, USA finally got the internet, and by internet i mean Telnet from a local BBS, I played a game called "Realms of Despair", a text-based MUD, the type of game that is in many ways a precursor to the modern MMO genre.

Then, in '96 we actually got a real dial-up ISP and I remember playing the hell out of Subspace (sort of MMO-shooter type game), before playing Underlight for about a year, which was my first 'real' MMO.

Sadly that game never really caught on and is no longer around, and I didn't play anything after that for a long time.  As a matter of fact I got really into RPGMaker 2000 and made a couple of fairly popular games (Bob's Big Adventure and Dragon Destiny), before discovering Dark Age of Camelot.

Real life got in the way though so I only played for a few months.  I got WoW about a month after launch, played the hell out of it - I was one of the top raiding priests on my server in classic WoW, switched to shaman with TBC, got to Black Temple, then realized I wasn't having fun anymore (for a number of reasons I won't go into here since they're not relevant to the topic), so I quit, deleted my characters, and now I play Eve (which I'd been playing already in my later days in WoW).

Now my characters in Eve are about 18 months old, I'm still having fun, I like the format of Eve so I'm pretty sure I'll hang around for a long time yet.  I think I'll pick up Aion when it comes out though (will still play Eve though, it's pretty light on time requirements to stay competitive) - looks like a good old-school type of MMO with pretty graphics.  Call me old (I'll be 30 in a month) but I think the older MMOs really were better - the new ones just seem... too casual / shallow / whatever you want to call it to me.

Runescape is my first lol.....But after I have grown up, I think it suck so much. The graphics are crappy, game is stupid... So I tried many mmorpg, and I find Cabal Online, its the best I have played.

My first mmo was some free to play asian grinder, so it was never my favorite ;p

Planetside was the 4th mmo I have played, and it was probably the one I most enjoyed, untill it went arse end up(damn SoE and their shitty expansions and 'improvements')

To be honest no mmo would even come in the top 10 games I have played, hoping that will change at some point.

how about you just tell us without the googling

He probably can't because its probably a pirated server which MMORPG.COM rightfully frowns upon.

Thanks for the votes and posts, guys. Some very interesting points. It's nice to have a thread where people can be united by their love for MMORPGs and discuss the genre without descending into a flame-fest.

I wonder if the people who are making their foray into the genre today will look back on current games with such nostalgia? The cynic in me says no. I get the impression that these pioneering games had a certain magic to them that will never quite be matched.

Games like UO, EQ1 and SWG were at the cutting edge of MMORPGs in their day, and had communities that knew they were at the forefront of something special. The market has changed now, and has finally acquired the mass appeal it coveted. The days of MMORPGs being niche are over. This is having an effect on how companies design their games, and is probably the reason many posters here haven't found a game to succeed their first love.

My first was Earth and Beyond and I had a blast playing it. After EA shut it down, I tried Eve for a very short time and this game was not for me. Off to SWG and I was back in heaven. Then CU and NGE. Guess I got spoiled, cause now every game I try, just don’t match up with E&B and Pre NGE SWG. And I think I tried just about every game out there.

My first was Siera's The Realm Online and I am glad that MMOs have gotten a lot better since those days.

My first MMO was Ragnarok Online. I still love it, but any of my friends asking me to join them again in it, I would say no. I love it for the memories, and the backpain of leveling my chars. It was infested by bots and corrupted GMs (allegedly).

I had played quite a few free ones, but my first true MMO was FFXI. And yes, it has my fondest memories, and I have never been addicted to an MMO like I was FFXI. I never even reached end level, I think I got near 60 at the time. I loved the game because it was all about grouping, you  had to group to go anywhere. The only problem with FFXI is that it's like having a 2nd job, at the time I was just out of high school so I could do it, but I can't be a hardcore gamer anymore at 24.

I was then on to multiple different MMO's, since then I believe i've played every mainstream one that exists. Unfortunately I never played SWG pre-cu, which sounds like it would have catered to my interests somewhat. The only other one that stuck like many others was WoW. I'm not one to completely bash WoW like others, I had a lot of fun with WoW for over 2 years. But again, I loved leveling out with friends in WoW, doing instances etc. Then I hit level 70, and I realized it was pretty much Raid or PVP, I did raid for awhile but I absolutely hated it. I pvped for awhile only because it was the only other thing to do. So far I love the journey of grouping up etc, but I hate it when I get to the end and everything becomes "Serious raiding". I hate feeling obliged I have to login for 4 hours on any night.

Now is a very odd time for MMO's. Personally there is absolutely no salvation in sight whatsoever. At least last year we had two potential giants of AOC and WAR (and possibly LOTRO depending what time of the year) coming out. While they are all decent MMO's, each one of them has yet to catch me for long periods of time. So what then, re-sub with WoW, pay 60$ for an expansion so I can experience 10 levels of fun with friends and be right back at Raiding or PVP? ....sadly that's becoming an all too real option lately.

I think I have the same feelings as some other people on here ... Everquest was my first MMO and the sheer volume of memories and friends made (some are more like family now) make it my favorite MMO still, HOWEVER, I think that SWG's first few months were the most fun filled of my MMO life, those 20 man raids against the Empire prison and force sensitive witches were a blast.

Pre-Trammel UO was and its still the best mmo world so far.I will be very happy if Darkfall succeeds to recreate the immersive world of UO.

My first MMO was Dark Age of Camelot. It blowed me (and my wife, who till that point only ever play solitair) away.

It will always be my favourite as my second granddaughter was born and living with us at the time and she spent many hours asleep on me as a crafted up my Spellcrafter :)

I was playing mmo's back when they were called MUDs and were all text based. My first real mmo was EQ and while I will always remember the fun I had in it, last time I went back to play it, I was extremely bored with the simplicity of combat... Pull mob, click auto-attack, click 1 of 8 allowed spells every few seconds, rinse and repeat. I think it was the community that was the best part of EQ and well that community I knew is long gone. There are some players on the server still but none from the days long ago.

I played Ragnarok in OB but failed me when it became pay to play. Besides, I didn't have the time either. Next was my first true MMO, MU Online, which was composed of mainly zombie-like grinding for hours and when your character reached a certain level just leave them in a corner with an inventory full of potions. Then

I quit that moved to Cabal, and then raising levels became really hard so I quit hard after reaching end level twice (cap gets higher argh). I'm playing Atlantica now and it's amusing for now. Don't know in the future but I have expectations.

I still go back ot the old games and see if my characters are still there. Just that. Most of them have reached endgame anyways. I plan on reaching endgame in Atlantica too. Not sure if its gonna be good though. So my answer is, nope, my first is not my favorite. Its like your first girlfriend. You quit her because you had something better in mind. Same with the games.
