No More Down Time?

TivianTivian Member UncommonPosts: 168
I heard that there is supposed to be no more daily down time. Should be great for the Aussie's as DT is right at their peak play time. Any one else hear this?

I haven't heard that, but I'm sure the people that complain about the downtime will be happy. :)

Isn't the downtime used to replenish the asteroid belts (among other things). Not being able to find a belt that wasn't depleted was the biggest complaint I heard this weekend on the rookie chat channel.

DT is mainly used to clean up the servers from what I understand. Sounds like they have memory leak problems that require a restart once a day. If they manage to track down their leaks and eliminate down time, I am sure all will be happy, as it is the only substantial MMORPG that requires daily scheduled downtime. If you are looking into roids I would head out to the outer rims near 0.0 space and find a decently high security space and mine away. In my empire days I used to call Sinq Laison region home, try checking it out.

There are plenty of roids out there in secure space.

As for downtime, don't think its memory leak based think its just used to tweak things and add stuff mostly....on Sundays downtime is less than 15 mins usually and it really isn't that much of a bother in imho

I don't think its memory based either. if  so the servers would need to be rebooted alot more often then once a day.

But it is conf. they had extended down time last week that was designed to assist in eliminating the need for down time. we should see this in the next month or so.

If you know where to look and how to get there...which is not a given for rookie players. Of course I can't speak for all of us - but if you are just starting out it can be disheartening to not find asteroid on the first 3 belts you've searched.

From what I understand they basically keep that hour open so that players expect it and can plan for it, such as hotfixes after patches, minor equipment upgrades and replacements, stuff like that. Major tinkering of course they need to schedule longer outages, but things like content additions that can be done server-side without affecting the client (enabling new skills, for example) and eliminating certain types of server-side bugs require shutting down the server.  I'm not sure if they have to reboot to replenish resources such as npc-supplied items and roids, certainly they do not replenish when CCP reboots off-schedule. And the devs try to not work Sundays from what I've read in the devblogs on the site, so you are right, Sunday dts are usually very short.

As to the rock situation, you may find post-Shiva that rocks might be more accessible, since there will be other things to mine as well (dust clouds, ice fields, comets) that might be found in those systems. They promise to me more lucrative, so perhaps those with the skills/equipment to go after them will do so, and leave the rocks to the noobs. I certainly hope so, I was appalled when I started my main character in February, compared to my first account at release.

Another thing I recommend is to hook up with a pc corp asap, as they can often support new miners in more dangerous systems (comrades in Thoraxes are excellent at this).  Just make sure you are on compatible schedules.

Eve-online is based on a sql system. The Dt is supposed to be used to optimize the database (which is quite large I imagine). At the begining there was a full hour+ DT every day. Now the 1 hour Dt is  on Monday, Wednesday and Friday the other days is just a serverreboot (aprox 15mins). Sometimes there are 1 hour DT the other days too...

And yes it´s very annoying with DT. Few months ago, CCP said that it might come a time after Shiva when DT would be no more (or atleast not every day).
