Considering WAR

As an old DAOC player who loved RvR, how does WAR compare?

It's pretty good.  It's a lot more casual though (which to me helps as a i get older).   It can still get your blood pumping and keep battles are great.

     Some things to consider:

    - They're not redoing Trials of Atlantis.

    - CC has been toned down a lot compared to DAoC.

    - There's keep sieges like in DAoC.

    - Classes complement each other very well, like in DAoC.

    - There's a lot of open world RvR content as well as instanced RvR content (though currently people seem to hide in the "battlegrounds" a lot while leveling rather than fighting over keeps etc, but hopefully Mythic will do something to change this.

    - The instanced RvR (scenarios) is more like WoW battlegrounds than DAoC battlegrounds, although there's about 30 of them I believe.

    - In addition to keep sieges, there's massive fortress sieges and capital city raids.

    - Combat system is global cooldown-based, like World of WarCraft, rather than like DAoC.

    - People die slower.

    - Grind-based leveling has been replaced (or masked, if you prefer) by quests and Public Quests. And of course you can also PvP to level.

    - There's a Renown Rank system similar to the Realm Rank system, but without immensely powerful abilities.

    - There's no Relic raids, but you can raid the enemy Realm's leader NPC if you take their capital city.

    - There's 2 Realms instead of 3, and population balance is much, much better.

    - It's rather buggy, as it's a newly released MMO.

I love the game. It's been a while since I've been  addicted to an MMO, but WAR changed that quickly.

I'd say buy it and try it. Only you can decide if you like it.

This sums it up really well. I'm in one of the open PvP servers and my only complaint is that too many people use scenarios to level which appears to leave the rest of the world a bit empty. I've played the scenarios and you can level faster than running quests and grinding but it got old fast. I would love to see the exp you receive in the scenarios toned down a bit.

I would like to see quest xp upped. I find it odd that at level 13, quest give you almost 2k xp. And at level 23, quests give you 2k xp. These quests should atleast scale. You could get btter xp doing PQ's and even thats not much xp compared to scenarios, where your constantly spammed by xp gain. So I say up xp outside of scenarios across that board. ANd make the quests worth picking up. I know this isnt a PvE game, but how do you really expect people to come outside of scenarios, if you offer nothing. There item system is good. I've heard alot of people state there are problems with it. But my only problem is that you get anyone and thier mom needing on items when they can't use them. SO i can't wait till that's eliminated with the upcoming patch. The stats themselves are fine. I don't need big glowie things. It takes the immersion out of my gameplay seeing crap that reminds me of my little pony. Other than that this game lives up to my expectations for the most part. It's fun and casual.

My wife plays a black orc, sometimes.. when her Tank is running off after something, I think it's DAoC, the ghost of the game haunts WAR in a GOOD WAY.

When we were taking out a keep the other night... I was back in Camelot, watching my Albion Brethren raid those DAMN MIDGARD!  (till my wife came on the screen and shattered that illusion... sigh).

WAR is DAoC, but it's more then DAoC, it's less cumbersome, more fluid... it's DAoC if it had been done today if you get my meaning.  Influenced by changes in the MMO market, and based in a known IP.

    I loves it.

It may feel like an amalgamation fo both DAoC and WoW..   but it is a good game in its own right.

    The problems currently are:

    - bugs and some people having stuttering problems.. but I think the majority of people do just fine.

    - Destruction outnumbers Order.  Its not a game breaker and I suspect things will improve with time.

    - Everyone doing scenarios to level.  I think everyone is trying to rush to 40...  theres still plenty of RvR on the busier servers.

I would strongly advise you to play order on a med/high server.
