My first 5 minute impressions

rikiliirikilii Member UncommonPosts: 1,084

1.  Graphics are dated but not bad;

2.  Character appearance customization options blow;

3.  No voice acting at all = meh

4.  Control customizations are horrid (unless there's a workaround)

  • No mouselook toggle
  • Cannot strafe and mouselook at the same time (holding down the LMB toggles your strafe keys into turning keys, which is totally the opposite of what it should do)

If anyone knows any way around #4, please let me know, because otherwise, I won't be playing this game.

    1. you are running everything on max?

    2. Sliders, sliders, sliders. If this is bad then I'd like to see good I can think of at least three games than are far far worse...

    3. Nope kinda miss that myself but SoR was created by a smal compagny and voice acting probably isn't cheap...

    4. Asked in Uni did you? No didn't think so hit "k" to remap every key, that's right every key, to your hearts content..

    Mouse look toggle? check

    Strafe while mouse looking? check (in mouse look the turn and strafe keys swap...(bit silly I admid but hey))

    If you had taken the trouble of asking in Universe chat (Q&A) you would have gotten the answers to all your questions.

    Lastly a small tip: SoR doesn't take you by the hand to lead you through the game, asking people might help you to get into things but if you expect to get everything handed to you in the first five minutes you'll be diapointed because even I'm still learning new things after about three years of play.

    If you are prepared to make the effort you might find Ryzom enjoyable but if you want things to be easy this simply isn't the game for you.

    wow - still using that Amiga huh?

    heheh

    your numbers 1 and 2 seem to be about a different game - Ryzom is gorgeous with everything maxed and since it is an older game most people should have a computer that can do this

    for myself 3 and 4 - never noticed so i don't care (even though apparently you can create 4)

    a full 5 minutes - yup, a good place to stop and write a review

    Real custimization surpasses just about any other MMO.   Starting at custom gear crafting, the leveling system, and  the stanza(custom skill) system.

    I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

    Ryzom is a game for an intelligent player - and 5 minutes wont EVER give you credibility as a reviewer for ANY game.

    And initial impressions - much like real life are often misleading.

     I must refrain ... from... insulting ... intelligence ... of OP.Hey I just got this nice bag of chips,I just opened the bag,I am now going to review it.

    1.It smells

    2.The bag is shinny

    I give it a 10/10,awesome!

    Say what you will, but if I find the controls unbearable, I can't see any point in playing it.

    And yes, I had all the graphics maxed.

     YES.  Like I said, it looks okay, but nothing special.
    2. Sliders, sliders, sliders. If this is bad then I'd like to see good I can think of at least three games than are far far worse...
     Terrific.  I can move my lips up and down.  But there are about 6 different hair styles.  Again, this is not a deal breaker for me, but it would be nice to have more options, and for the sliders to do more.  SWG comes to mind as a game where the character appearance options actually had a major impact on character appearance.
    3. Nope kinda miss that myself but SoR was created by a smal compagny and voice acting probably isn't cheap...
    I wouldn't expect full voice acting, but vocal greetings from NPCs are nice...add a bit to the feel of the game without being overbearing (e.g. EQ2)

    4. Asked in Uni did you? No didn't think so hit "k" to remap every key, that's right every key, to your hearts content..
    Mouse look toggle? check
    I looked through all the key configuration options, and saw nothing for ML toggle.  Care to enlighten me where I could find it (that's what forums are for, no?)
    Strafe while mouse looking? check (in mouse look the turn and strafe keys swap...(bit silly I admid but hey))
    The fact that they swap is the problem.  I don't want my strafe keys to switch to turning keys when I use mouselook.  It's pretty stupid to have turning keys activate when your in mouselook.
    Can that swapping be turned off?
    If you had taken the trouble of asking in Universe chat (Q&A) you would have gotten the answers to all your questions.
     How do you know?  I didn't get answers on here.

    I don't expect anything other than reasonably adjustable controls.  If they are, fine, but I couldn't find the option anywhere.
    If you are prepared to make the effort you might find Ryzom enjoyable but if you want things to be easy this simply isn't the game for you.
    It should be easy to configure your controls the way you want.  The game can be hard as it wants to be.

    So I figured out there's a  "Free Look" option on a pull down menu if you left click and hold.  This locks in mouse looking until you right click again.

    Still can't find a way to bind this to a key.

    1. graphics are fine, jsut as good as any other  game IMO

    2. Yeah could be better but not gamebreaking

    3. Voice acting is overrated....its ok once in awhile but play a game like EQ2 where they constantly jabber and it gets old fast.

    4. Only thing that bothers me about the controls is I'd like to move my view back more but other than that its fine.....Also I dont see any reason why you'd need to strafe in this game.......

        The biggest mistake so many new players make when they come into Ryzom is that they think its going to be identical to whatever game they came from (WoW, eq2, lotro, aoc, whatever)......You have to take some time to ask questions in ryzom....if you enter the game thinking you know it all you will not last very long.

    Really It's that easy

    As for the strafe well like Gilga allready said there's little use for it after all it's an MMO not an FPS. Personally I've yet to find any use for the mouse look in Ryzom in fact switching it on accidently can be a real pain.

    (to switch on mouselook without going through the right click menu simply press both mouse buttons at the same time..)

    As far as I know you cannot change the swapping but then I've never bothered with it.

    So you asked in Uni and no one answered? Somehow I find that hard to believe but maybe you play when there's hardly anyone on.

    To sum it all up: You can customize the controls by simple hitting "k"on your keyboard. The mouse look has some quircks but it's not as if it's usefull in an MMO, same goes for Strafing it's there but not much use.

    On a side note, the game has a "help" function that nobody seems to bother about. Look for the question mark in either the control panel or at the top of certain windows. A lot of the stuff you want to know is probably in there and if it isn't then maybe it should be.

    Oh and once again: you do have to put in some effort, if you are not prepared to explore a bit, both in the game world and in the UI, you'll never get the full enjoyment out of this game. Ryzom requires you to think because it will not hand it all to you on a silver platter...

    You can strafe by holding ctrl and pushing your left or right key.  (Well its more of a sidestep)

    I am well aware that you can hit "k" (or click on the system menu on the right side) to open up the key mapping.  I did this long before I posted here, and I have checked and double checked, and here is no option to bind "free look" to a key.

    The mouse is VERY useful in an MMO and so is being able to side step.  Side stepping allows you to run in one direction and move around obstacles without taking your eyes off of what you're running towards.  This is VERY USEFUL in PVP.

    It just seems very odd that the function is in the game, but you can't key bind it.  I even tried to make a macro, but the function is not on the pulldown menus (and I don't know if there is a way to use / commands to build macros).

    I guess I am a little confused by the semantics here… How is free look all that different from simply right-clicking and panning the camera angle? As far as I know my movement and strafe keys work normally when I am doing that.

    Toggle mouse look with right is apperantly the only way to toggle.

    As for the trouble with strafe I don't really see how there can be one...

    Without mouse look:

    W= forward

    S= back

    A= turn left

    D= turn right

    With mouse look:

    W= Forward

    S= Back

    A= Strafe left

    D= Strafe right

    Mouse look in Ryzom plays just like just about every FPS out there, sound fine to me. If the right click toggle is that big an issue then I doubt you'll ever find a game that works for you.

    Maybe, just Maybe strafe fighting is usefull in some MMO's but since Ryzom has an auto follow it isn't that important here...

    Thanks for the comments, they may be something the new owners will look into.

    I hope you can still enjoy the gameplay regardless of the problems you mentioned, maybe some of the offered advice will help there.

    If some of us seem defensive well, it is just that we have an old friend (Ryzom) back and remeeting people we have missed.

    I realize that's the way it works, but it should not be that way.

    If you have A and D bound to turning, then it makes sense for them to switch to sidestepping when you hold down the RMB.

    But if you have them bound to sidestepping, it makes no sense for them to switch to turning.

    I personally hate keyboard turning, and never, ever use it, so I never want my A and D keys to switch to it.

    Thanks for the calm, rational reply.

    I definitely would like to explore Ryzom a bit.  I was just posting out of frustration primarily regarding the control issues.  The others are nice-to-haves, but not dealbreakers.

    I think I've found an acceptable solution, although not ideal.  It's just a shame that so many games can't include something so simple as a key binding for mouselook toggle.  It's frustrating.

    The difference is, the default is that you HOLD the RMB down to mouse look.

    With "free look" you activate it and don't have to hold the RMB down.  It is also known as Mouselook Toggle.  You turn on Mouselook by pressing a key (and releasing it) and mouselooking is on until you press that key again.

    For those of us who use ML most of the time, this helps prevent hand fatigue and carpel tunnel injury.

    AND....if developers were smart enough to give the option for a targeting cross hair that is always present in the center of the screen in ML mode, you could pretty much do ML 100% of the time.  SWG had this.

    So you say you use muose look most of the time, here's a suggestion:

    Without mouse look:

    W= forward

    S= back

    A= turn left

    D= turn right

    Z= Strafe left

    C= Strafe right

    With mouse look:

    W= Forward

    S= Back

    A= Strafe left

    D= Strafe right

    Z= Turn left

    C= Turn right

    That way you'll have your preferred set up most of the time and have to stratch just a little bit the rest of the time...

    It's not ideal I admit but MMO's tend to be played without mouse look (in fact some even have click to move which is far far worse than this...)

    I just played the game for the first time.  I had to rebind everything to make it work like all the other mmos on the market do automatically, but whatever at least i could set things up.  I did not specify strafe keys at all.  I set 'a' to left turn and 'd' to right turn.  When I hold the left mouse button down those keys now automatically become my strafing keys without any additional setup.  Just doing that alone makes the game work properly for me, i can run forward and strafe around people without issue.  Except that just strafing in the game is very slow hops instead of a steady walk.

    Then I spent five minutes trying to figure out how to jump....

    And I hope you realized that you can´t. At least not without casting a spell.

    And in addition you realized, or at least accepted that its not a gamebreaker to not be able to jump like a bunny.

    I´d like to be able to jump somtimes too in this world, especially if some "not that good defined hitbox" prevents me from running around some smal opstacle and I have to make a realtively wide detour. Which luckylie does not happen all too often.

    A system that connected jumping to stamina or somesuch would be sufficient and fitting into the world.

    Maybe it´ll come someday, who knows. Untill then it´s:

    Atys boys/girls can´t jump. - So what?

    The rather sad thing is that at character creation you do get an option between several keyboard layouts but you'll end up with the default :( Hopefully that bug will be fixed in the future...

    I certainly hope that the OP does take the time to explore Ryzom.

    I always use to tell everyone when you start Ryzom FORGET every other game you have ever played it is unlike any other game and it will be hard for you to play if you insist on comparing it to other games.

     Try not to forget this game was released 4 yrs ago.  Released mind you.  It is a awesome game and we who started with it 4 years plus beta are just happy to once again run and play in Atys.

    We have a great community.  Tho we do get defense cause we love the game so much.  I do have to admit 5 mins is not long enough to give a good review.

    Again not all games are for everyone.  I doubt it will ever happen.

    Since I don't PvP, I dont use strafe and not even sure what it is.

    Have a good day and play with an open mind, you are entitled to your opinion but remember it is your opinion.

     I personaly like the game. It has some good secondary skills. Like the game graphics, enviroment, weapons and creatures. I like most of it. But it kept on disconnecting, aand i never god a solution on how to fix it. So i quited playing the game. but apart from that i like the game Have you tryied settings, cause i cant remember having any problem with lacking mouselook option.
