Is shilling / viral marketing against forum rules?

I think it's a fair question to ask.

Admittedly, I don't play Age of Conan any more. I stopped a while ago and didn't really think much of it, my friends stopped playing so I stopped playing. Same feeling I had with LOTRO, good graphics, bad game due to lack of "playability". Truth be told, I play MMOs mainly for some dungeon adventures and chat with friends, but playability is a big issue.

However, looking at a lot of the posts on this forum, I am compelled to post here.

I am fascinated by this forum, I admit it. Just watching what is going on here has made me look at all MMO forums in a new light. I now see patterns I didn't see before; it's just that on this forum they are less subtle, less hidden.

But to simply ask the question simply: is shilling or viral marketing against forum rules? I don't mean: is it hard to detect (of course it's hard to prove too) I just mean "in theory", is it against the rules?

Ok, so let me go off topic right away to drop a essential comment here.

AoC forum has a lot of discussion and controversy because there are so many new gaming systems implemented in this game. Some love the changes and embrace them as the future to the MMO industry while others hate it because it is a change they simply do not like (It's not what they are used to).

Ummm no, lot of people didn't like the game because it is a POS and some feel they were lied to when the game shipped without some of the promised content.

I think they should be banned. They aren't being honest, and allowing them to use the forums to spread their propaganda in fact destroys the credibility of everybody else who's using these forums to share their actual opinions with other people. Trying to promote a product is fine by me, but destroying these forums in the process is unacceptable to me.

While I don't agree with some of the specifics in some of Avery's posts, I don't think it's quite fair to put him in the same category as the other two mentioned.  Avery is a correspondent and being in favor of the title you're a correspondent for certainly is a plus.  There's no secret about who he is, how he came into the correspondent role or his views on the game, and as such my view of Avery remains centered around his role as a correspondent and the content of information provided.
The other two however, are another matter entirely.

I'm not going to argue over who's a shill or who's not, however convincing yourself others are is a cop out IMO. What's an easier approach, argue a point (debate) or write someone off  and attack their integrity (ad-hominem)?  That's exactly what you're doing right now, rather than a. acknowledging a differing opinion b. countering that opinion or c. respecting that differing opinion.  You're attacking the poster himself, rather than their ideas or logic.
The problem in doing that is that there's no way to prove what you're saying. They very well may be people who genuinely appreciate the game.
