Tired of waiting for the evolution of the sandbox/skill based MMO

Z3R01Z3R01 Member UncommonPosts: 2,426

Yes I know the majority of MMO players enjoy linear games like WoW and Lotro but to be honest I dont even consider them in the same videogame genre.

In my head I've split the MMORPG  into sub-genres, Sandbox/skill Fantasy based being one of the many genres.

How long will I have to wait? must I go back to UO to even play a good sandbox? Both Ryzom and Eve are Sci-fi and Wurm is very Indie and not my thing.

Is it the intention of the MMO developers to torture me and players that like similar games?

Please give me a god damn sandbox/skill based game to play, Or do these devs thing UO was enough to hold us over until we die?

You guys don't want to know how many times i've gone and played Morrowind/Oblivion in the last five years just for my skillbased/sandboxish gameplay fix.

At least the future looks promising with Darkfall, Mortal online and the possibility of the bethesda MMO.

Playing: Nothing

Looking forward to: Nothing

It is really sad that most all developers continue using the tried and true formula for making current mmorpg's and end up making this years newest theme park mmo over and over again.  I wonder when originality was thrown out the window and often end up just blaming WoW for being as popular as it was.  WoW was a good game for its time honestly but after playing it I have no urge to play some reskinned version of the same game with very limited content additions which is what we are currently stuck with.

In the end I'm sure it all boils down to what the dev's and publishers believe can grant them the biggest slice of pie in terms of subscriptions. Darkfall's dev's, unlike so many others, actually acknowledge that their game is a niche game designed for a specific type of gamer and they themselves don't believe it will rival WoW in popularity. This is one of the many things that I applaud them for. It's been nearly 5 years since I first found out about Darkfall and I find it hard to even look at other mmo's wthout immediatly feeling jaded towards them.

So to answer your question, yes! I'm very very tired of waiting at this point but, I will continue to wait until either Darkfall releases ( hopefully soon) or another company is able to see past the numbers and realize people don't want to play the same game again and again.

Quite possibly Darkfall will answer your needs. It's supposed to be exactly that - a sandbox/skill based MMO FRPG. It appears that the devs are getting ready for closed beta (again) after their latest round of platform/technology changes. I have to say they took their time, but in their defense, they've always maintained that they would be taking their time, and it would be done when it was done lol.

They released a video showing some gameplay, much of which was in need of polishing, but at least it works well enough to demo, and I'm sure ppl will help them fix their game up in beta.

    Good luck whatever you choose!

Then there all the non combat skills to consider with their varied effects on game economy and availability of items. It's a daunting task to say the least. Heck developers can't even make an economy work in the "simplified" world of level based advancement and  click-o-matic crafting. They can surely do it but is it ecomoically feasable on the scale of today's games?  I doubt it.

Umm, that's a little over the top, don't you think? I agree with the animations and effects work, but you don't have to balance everything perfectly in every possible way before you can roll a game that's fun to play. As a matter of fact, having imbalanced abilities pitted against each other is a very effective method of creating risk and challenge.

    For the OP (and anyone):

What sort of characteristics from UO would you bring forward into a contemporary 3D MMO?

    Same question, but for Morrowind/Oblivion?

Reason I ask, a few friends and I are working on an Indie MMORPG and it's already non-instanced, skill-based and classless 1.   I'm always open to suggestions on what's missing from today's MMOs.  On low-budget, if you can't dazzle them with graphics, you baffle them with great gameplay 2

    1. some skill choices lock out others, but it still allows significant freedom.

    2. or at least try to

to the OP: Ryzom is barely sci-fi. only things involving tech of any sort are the guns players use, and the karavan faction guys. that's about it. it's pretty much fantasy, just on a very alien world. give it a shot

Count me in, i've been waiting for "the Game for me" for going on 3 years now and so far only Darkfall is claiming to provide the content (theme doesn't bother me Sci-Fi/Fantasy).

On a side note the ability to create sandbox MMORPG's has been around for a very long time, not sure but i think longer than the junk they pass off as MMORPG's these days. In my opinion, so what if one game made millions with the most number of subscriptions, wahoo, big deal, good for them, sad thing is it pretty much turned the MMORPG genre into MMO minus the RPG element.

Yeah It's a Fantasy/Science Hybrid a Tech with magic system. I actually play Ryzom and Eve still I would just like to be able to play a normal run of the mill high fantasy sandbox/skill based game with Elfs, orcs, humans and stuff like that.

To be honest If there were a UO2 or bethesda  announcement I would stop playing every MMO right now and come back when they released.

It just sucks that the Niche high fantasy mmo fans havent gotten anything to play since UO

Have been waiting for a decent sandbox since SWG went NGE (Pre-NGE / Pre-CU Vet).  Have tried the games mentioned with the exception of Darkfall (still waiting on it) and have been disappointed  by games like Ryzom and EVE.  Currently waiting on Runes of Magic to see how it goes, but F2P games usually are Item Mall based.  While I do not muind paying a subscription to play, I balk at having to buy end game gear thru Item malls, or the mats to make gear.

Give me a true sandbox and I will call it home.

Don't we all wish buddy. There is nothing currently offered that will meet your needs. I think in the future we can only hope games like Darkfall, Guild Wars 2, Mortal Online, and some others fill in that blank that were all looking for.
