I can't help thinking of AoC when I see DF

As a subsidised IT company heavily involved in developing this sector in greece , they  have commitments to help with events like the sessions in Athens next week and present at events within Greece. But this is really with respect to IT development, the chance for advertising is just a bonus.
I have worked with similar subsidies and there are always strings attached, and the AV/DFO approach makes sense. Budgets may not be as limited as people believe but to be prudent always helps. And these guys have good reason to be with their initial start-up.
AoC launch was smooth, just a shame the game is so lacking. The other poster is out of context basically AoC have just screwed themselves and misrepresented and not delivered(I wouldnt wish any company to go under in the MMO sector and it's a shjame).

The only reason I bothered to make any comment in this thread was to correct a blatently false statement.  I might even have let it pass, but it was immediately backed up as being true, by someone else.  "They dont spend a penny" is just plain wrong.  But hey, while I am here...

Pretty much agree with you about AoC.  Though the launch was OK, to some extent, they were also a victim of their own success.  I experienced it first hand when I pre-ordered, but they were unable to deliver an actual box for weeks, due to high demand.  I did get to play the game for awhile when they extended the early access period, but when it expired again, I still did not have my box - or more important - the damn KEY.  So I rage canceled.  Anyway, I played enough to know there was no long term future with the game...as you said, it was lacking.  Fun for awhile though, and if I had recieved my key on time, I likely would have played it for a few months.

We still dont know if Aventurine is misrepresnting their product, or if they will deliver.  They have set the bar high for themselves.  However, I really cant think of any MMO I played that actually delivered on all the pre-release promises.  Every single one of them failed in some regard to live up to potential.  Some are more spectacular failures than others, of course.  I think AoC gets the hotseat because they are the most recent AAA disappointment, not because they are the worst by any stretch of the imagination!  I dont think Darkfall has to be perfect.  Most games I have played for long periods had serious issues of one sort or another, over promised and under delivered, but they had that certain "something".  If Darkfall scores on the major sandbox features, and delivers decent performance for serious PvP - then most other shortcomings will be forgiven, for the most part.

the thing is, their mantra has been letting their product eventually speak for itself. they're going to let us try it before we buy it, meaning theafter howevermanyyears they most likely have implemented the features they've been describing, or else they'd be making people preorder.

where did the people behind darkfall state that they're going to let us try it before we buy it?

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

    right here.  paragraph 3

    here's the copy paste:

Darkfall preorders by the way aren't applicable. Our hope for Darkfall is that you won't spend a cent on the game until you've tried it and decided you want to play it.

well i do not see too many paralelles:

    • Funcom: very aggressive pre-launch marketing

Adventurine: not yet started with significant marketing
    • Funcom: not any clear concept for long-term motivation. For a while ,it seemed to be the border kingdom keep thingy, but even for that it was unclear, how it should incent players on a larger scale and for a longer time.

Adventurine: sandbox design from the heart. crafting and ressources seem to have long term motivations( item decay). PvP seems to have lomg term concepts beyond level/quest grind mills

      Player driven content by alliances.
    • Funcom: after launch it was clear that AoC is just another Quest/Level grind mill themepark
    • Adventurin: trustable commitment to sandbox design. what ever will make it into the release, i believe these guys, that they want this to be a sandbox instead of a themepark, which is the reason why i keep an eye on this game.

in the end all these differences are not a 100% guarantee that darkfall will not be a totally overhyped vaporware with poor outcome, but while AoC was quite foreseeable a low performer (many of funcoms flaws as a company manifested already with Anachry Online), Darkfall has some potential and Adventurine has to proof that they have the expertise to execute their vision.

In the very end, it is not what makes it into alpha/beta/release. In the end it is all about what is in the game and what not 6 month and 18 month after the game was released.... everything before these points is "potential", nothing more.

Frequently they do. Gaming conventions are a great place to play or at least see played many of the games before they even hit open beta. You may not be seeing the final product but you at least know the features are there. Adventurine has chosen not to do this for whatever reasons. They catch some heat over it but if the game is good enough it won't matter after launch.

This is why Darkfall fans get called a cult. You throw these rediculous statements up there like they were truth handed down from a divine being.  I don't believe you're trying to decieve people you're just too wrapped up in your own arguments to see the obvious flaws in it.

Total bullshit, never liked conventions, never will. They show a buggy product, and not just most of the times but always, all the while though, there are people that will praise it, which I just find hypocritic.

Besides, about the people who come to troll here, even if Aventurine showed the features, they would still do the same thing they always do.

Rofl.  Whether you like conventions or not has no bearing on the obvious truth. Companies do show game features before launch. No one said they are perfect complete games at that point.  This is another reason Darkfall fans get called a cult. Faced with direct refutation of their "facts" they immediately fall back on denial of reality even  though it serves no purpose.

Speaking of Direct Refutation of facts, you do realise DarkFall is being presented at Athens Digital Week I think it was oct 16th to be precise but even if that isn't the precise date it will be presented durring the convention Between Oct. 13th - 19th. So.... take that as you will.
