So I've finally cashed out on some money from SecondLife. Which is great, except im not sure what to.. do with it.
Well, I wasn't a little while ago, that is. I decided that in conjunction with SL, I was desperate for an actual MMORPG. So I'm turning to you, fellow users of mmorpg.com, for the facts, opinions, ups and downs of your favorite MMORPGs.
Bear in mind that I'm not looking for a game to "tide me over" until WoW or EQ2, because i don't care about either of those. I'd just like a few of you guys and gals to tell me about -your- favorite game, then I'll decide which one's best for me.
Tell me about:
Skills: What's your favorite? Least favorite? Why?
Character customization: Clones with skill differences? Clones with no skill differences? Unique looking skill-clones? different looking, varied skilled characters?
Graphics: Environment? ambience? Special attack/spell effects?
Customer Service: Helpful or not? ... Existant?
Sound: Music? Sound effects?
The Basics: How's the lag? Are people nice?
If you could address at least -one- question from each category, it'd be great. And be sure to add any special high or low points i nthose categories, if you so choose!
one last thing: Do -NOT- flame anyone else's posts please... more flame threads are the last things the forums need. Just pretend you're the first person posting even oif you aren't and we can hopefully avoid that. Thanks!

Wait until Vanguard:Saga of Heros, www.vanguardsoh.com .
Brad McQuaid bored me with EQ and so I wont go there.
I'll wait on WoW.
If you have extra cash I suggest sending it to the Theely fund, which will be used to by mass amounts of beer when EQ2 & WoW comes out. (I figured the only way to make a good pick out of the two was if I was totaly crapfaced-hammered)
Anyways hehe, I suggest DAoC. I feel its one of the better MMOs thats on the market at the moment. I really don't want to get into all the highs and lows since I know those are floating around already. I suggest reading up on it a tad and see what you think.

He said that he didn't care about them... read his post.
The best things that I can tell you is to go your own research on this topic. Thats why I didn't spew forth all the details that you asked for. Just gave you a place to start your research.

Well I have played a lot of MMORPGs and two kept me really hooked for a long time. My first and biggest addiction was Dark Ages (www.darkages.com). While it may not have the best graphics, this 2d engine does give the game an unique feel, and makes the game a bit more close and personal with other players. It has a free trial so I recommend you give this game a try.
My other big addiction was Everquest. I loved the variety in races/classes and the huge amount of places to explore. Also with the large playerbase there was always someone on to group with and hunt some stuff. The downside to this game is all the expansions that have come out, which are all sold seperatly, making this game an expensive choice. Also, with EQ2 on the lookout I'm not sure its still wise to start out playing EQ. (www.everquest.com)
I just started playing MapleStory and so far I like it a lot. I think its the first MMORPG with side-scrolling graphics, and its free. (www.mapleglobal.com)

It shocks me that so many people suggested to wait for EQII or WoW when i said i don't care about either. For any future posts: I'm not interested in the LEAST in either of those games. my chance of purchasing/playing either is 0%. Thanks.
As for Theely, who seems to grasp the concept of reading, Thank you. I'll look a bit more into DAoC and see what i can see.
And thanks Mornar. EQ = bleh, but I'll checkj out those other two you mentioned.

Skills: CoH powers developpment is very simple, yet it work. Wish just start making me drool on this topic, but it is not coming soon. Vanguard: A little like EQ2 and WoW, yet, they have servers with specific rules, althought most of my friends spit at the mere mention of Brad name, I am considering it until I read about the specific servers.
Customizations: CoH is the best and the worst at the same time. The power tree is still simple, but again, it work. On the graphics, CoH customization make all the other game look like they are using 4 or 16 colors only. I cant say about Vanguard or Wish, they are still to come in the future and there is so much that remain to be seen.
Graphics: CoH is as good as the graphics can be. Vanguard is many good folks and they have the MS banner running high above their heads, the graphics will prolly be top notch when it come out, whatever they post for now, expect that to be sketchs, no more. Wish, graphics lack a little, but, I still play game like Civ2, if the game is worth it, I doubt the graphics will be a major issues.
Customers services: The bigger and the most popular they get, the more it decrease. CoH have a very good customer service but I think they are themselves surprise at their success, like Verant was, let see if they adapt better then Kunark adapt EQ(I dont say Kunark was bad, I say it was as good as it should have been). Vanguard should have good services, but it is Brad and MS, the service will go down the shaft once they feel they can sit on their back and enjoy popularity. Wish, I cant say.
Musics: CoH music is great, I play with it ON...no idea for games to come.
Lag: CoH have no lag or very little. Vanguard been running MS banner should have a nice way to handle lag, but who know? Wish, no idea.
Player based: That wont change much from game to game, however, in CoH, you can instanced and be alone or with friends only should you care, which is something Vanguard dont believe in. 90% players are nice or outrightly kinds and helpfull. 9% are morons, and 1% are jerks! The more the game enforce a system on others(like need to raid, to PvP, to do anything in particuliar rather then what you want in order to progress), the more baddies you should get, as baddies are attracted to bad features like flies to **it.
CoH recently add accolades which aggro many casuals in the current form, as they feel they need to do precisely something and they often dont like this something. I am pretty confident CoH will adapt nicely...not to mentions accolades are not supported by the game itself, there is no accolade developpment tree inside the game unlike all the others aspect, I assume it is because accolade are pretty much in an alpha stage and they kindly let us try it.
Vanguards and Wish are not even in a serious alpha stage as far as I know...
Me, personnally, I LOOOOOVE CoH...but they recently aggro some of my casuals friends with the accolades and I wish they find a way to un aggro them by changing the system in a way where I can work more and progress my toon in a form or another, while not enforcing it on every casuals. If they lose the casuals, they lose everything, there is always a form of ''hardcores'' players that will glue to a game, thereby they need to adapt the game to make sure casuals are happy, not a minority of hardcores(and hide behind cheap bigger groups arguments, those groups are a minority, so raiding is a minority and saying otherwise is a lie, raiding does not benefit the majority, it benefit a minority, it is not bad as long as it dont harm the majority), all the better if they can make the simplest hardcores like me happy. But they need to focus on...the casuals...and most precisely, the casuals that KEEP playing the game.
(I believe that) ATM EQ2 is mostly attracting players that still play EQ or folks that are so casuals that in 2 months, EQ2 will be over and they will be playing something else. WoW benefit from Blizzard reputation and at start it will help a lot, but eventually, they will lose many players, as the magic of the magical Blizzard name cede place to a must raid setting.
The funniest things about EQ2 and WoW is that the father of raiding(Brad's team be the evil name) is more open minded and less raid enforcing then those 2 offsprings. Yes there would be raiding in Vanguard...but they carefully change sentances and make them vague enought to make DIFFERENTS servers rules and systems, no matter what way they go, they are less believing themselves in wha they create as a temporary solution to keep the hardcores busy then SoE or Blizzard are!

I recommend Star Wars Galaxies based on the answers to your questions below:
Skills: What's your favorite? Least favorite? Why?
There are so many skills in SWG, organized in Professions. Each profession has a skill tree and the grind that would seems pretty bad isn't that much of a factor because the sense of accomplishment and addictional options once you've achieved particular skills. My favorite type of skill system is similar to the one used in SWG where you improve as you use the skill. I like it because I really feel like I've earned the rewards when I've reached a certain skill level.
Character customization: Clones with skill differences? Clones with no skill differences? Unique looking skill-clones? different looking, varied skilled characters?
Star Wars Galaxies has the best customization out of any mmorpg out there. City of Heroes is also very detailed and allows many options. Nobody in SWG or CoH looks alike. SWG has many more different options because of the different alien races and such. Also, you can always change clothes and appear during the game it you get tired of a certain look. My favorite thing about SWG is the animations and emotes. Your character comes to life.
Graphics: Environment? ambience? Special attack/spell effects?
The graphics in SWG are amazing. Extremely detailed with some nice variety in different planets. It really gives the atmosphere of Star Wars and helps immerse you in the gameworld.
Customer Service: Helpful or not? ... Existant?
Sony Online Entertainment . . . I think I just said enough.
Sound: Music? Sound effects?
Nice Star Wars music and sounds.
The Basics: How's the lag? Are people nice?
Great people on the Kettemoor server where I played. I played for over a year and never had problems with the players, most of them are very friendly and helpful, and many are true roleplayers who love the game as they love Star Wars. No lag for me, ever. I had a smooth and enjoyable experience with the game on a high-end machine with a cable modem connection at all times of day and night.
If you've read these forums, you will be thinking that Star Wars Galaxies may be a mistake to try, but I am one of those that absolutely loved the game, despite it's shortcomings. Yes, there are some negative aspects (SOE customer service being one). Overall, I would say it is a quality mmorpg that really is different than Everquest, DAoC, Anarchy Online, and the many other that came before it (which is why I think people like to bash it).
-EQ(Love this game...been playing almost 4 years)
-Dark Age of Camelot(cool game)
-Final Fantasy XI(cool game)
-City of Heros ( I love this game)
-Lineage II
-ShadowBane

well i would suggest Eve - of course im completely biased as i been playing the game since beta.
it is not like 90% of the other mmorpg in many ways which may be a selling point for you.
its a space game - Elite meets MMO (not a flight sim though)
graphics and sound are great - and the new build that is comming soon increases graphic quality. (30% fps boost (approx) for example).
skills are learned in real time - whether you are logged in or not. Any skill is accesable to any player of any race as long as one has the pre-reqs for it. Longest traning time for a skill now is around 40-45 days if you are training a high level skills from lv4 to lv5 (lv5 is max) skill in an off-attribute area (5 attributes that effect training time - high perception skill enables faster training of ship piloting skills for example)shortest training time is under 20mins for a low level skill from lv0 to lv1. You can not grind to catch up in skills, but a new player can become very effective within a few months. group play voids people comments on not being able to catch up, find a niche and run with it. If you want to play solo then you wont be able to do everything, but if you want to play solo, why play a MMO anyhow.
on ship death you get into you capsule which you can then fly away in. on capsule death you reapear in your clone (higher skill point total requires higher level clone or you will lose some skill points. you can insure your ship .. but all equipment / ammo / cargo are either destroyed or dropped where you died, friends can pick it up, so can the person that killed you.
High, Low and No security areas. In High no pvp (or very little) occurs and new players are relatively safe to go about your business. Low security space is where you wont get saved if attacked .. but the guy who attacked you will take a security hit and eventualy will be not welcome in security space. No security = anything goes.. enter these fringe areas at your peril.
Corps and Alliance wars are ongoing .. if you like PvP or selling goods to those that do then there is no end to the fun / profit to be had
Easily the nicest most mature (of course not all are) players of an online game i met. As eve is more a thinking and planning game then a pure action, it attracts and keeps a diff sort of player than many games out there.
Although some have complained about the customer service, many others have stated it was the best. the people complaining were mostly those who had lost ships and were upset they wernt given new ones. anyone with other problems were very happy with the service. and the customer support for new players is excellent, alot of the time CCP (game maker) will have volouteers contact new players directly and help them out.
There is some lag when things get busy, but a decent system helps this alot, alot of my lag was client side, have yet to see how it stacks up in a fleet battle. The new building comming soon (tm) will decrease lag im told, but we shall see. Lag is part of MMO and i dont think you will find one without at least some of it, some of the time.
Game has a steep learning curve, but its worth it. And with the friendly people about ready to answer questions, it isnt hard to sort it out.
good luck with your choice m8
if youve got a PS2 Katamari Damacy is a must have, looks stupid but its awesome, and its only $20
should keep you busy untill a decent mmo comes out
Asheron's Call: Dark Majesty. Trust me, if you play in Darktide, you will LOVE it. I spent 3 years of my life there. I was playing everyday, all day. I skipped school for years, and then eventually dropped out because of it. The skill/stat system, allegiance system, pvp, are perfect and the best I've seen from any MMO period. AC1 was the best time of my ENTIRE LIFE. As well as my friend and brother, it was the best time of their life too. They also dropped out because of it. Now thats addiction...

Whatever you decide do NOT go for DaoC...honestly and from the bottom of my heart. Unless completely retarded PVP with only a couple of fun classes is your thing of course.
If for some reason you do pick it make sure you get on a server where the population imbalance doesnt kill the fun (if there is such a thing these days), don't expect to enjoy real PVP until you are level 50, fully decked out and even then expect to die LOTS until you've racked up at least 500k realm points (battlegrounds are not the end game and you may only stay in them for a limited period). Also make sure you've picked a decent class, but with all the 'balancing' that goes on in the game this changes from day to day.
At the moment my suggestion if you are looking for a MMO to play is try out the EVE free trial if you liked Elite. A tale in the desert if you are in the US and like strategy/something different or grab a bunch of single player games until the lauch of a decent MMO.
I picked up the original DAOC at best buy for 10 bucks...
I actually am having a blast playing it.

If you want some quality mmorpg, chose Anarchy Online, but it is kinda old so leveling will be a pain to catch up with the other players.
