Small tech question

I just got my new power supply today. It has lights in it so I wanted to see what it would look like before I install so I plugged it in, hit the switch , and nothing. Now, will it only work after it has been hooked up the the system? Or is this one a dud?

You're going to have to hook it up, sir.

Think about it... if your power supply only turned on by the switch in the back of it, it would always be on. Even when your computer is turned off (unless that PSU switch is turned off also). That wouldn't make much sense. Anyway, you at least have to hook it up to your mobo to see how purty it really looks.

Yep, hook it up. ATX power supplies are turned on by the motherboard. That switch in the back is essentially just a kill-switch.
