I am pretty much a PVE carebear who has never done much PVP. I am getting VERY interested in Darkfall though and was wondering what game would be good for getting in some PVP practice so i am not a complete noob when i get thrown into the FFA.
I shudder when i think about going back to WoW for any reason but im thinking about it just to get in some PVP. I would rather not buy a new game for it and what i have in my drawer is WoW, EQ, EQ2, Horizons, DAOC and Vanguard. I might also be able to download CoH because i played that but no longer have the discs.
Any recommendations.
P.S. I really have no interest is space/Sci-Fi games so Eve isnt really an option for me.

Try AoC (Age of Chivalry) it's a free Half Life source mod on Steam. Gives you a semi Idea of what combat will be like in DarkFall. Atleast many are playing that to train in the FPV Melee/Ranged aspect. It's not going to fully prepare you but it will give you a general idea on how the no lock on no auto attack combat will work atleast in concept. Other than that it is decently fun and free lol.
Yeah, Age of Chivalry isn't bad, but if you don't have Half-Life 2, then try Mount and Blade. It's got the more sandboxy feel that Darkfall might try at. The combat, i heard, was kinda similar, and it's very PvP oriented..The battles can get very massive. Good practice, if you ask me.
Yeah, Age of Chivalry will (hopefully) be a lot like Darkfall's combat and you will get pretty good at first person swordplay.
Thing about PvP is usually predicting human behavior and basically countering/copying it. You might have to do things that are annoying like running around in circles or what not, but you'll get used to it if you play enough. The best thing to do is to maybe get some minor tips to get started and then learn the game for yourself. Each person plays a little different, whatever fits best for you.
So is running around and screaming "Leave me alone!!" a good tactic.
Well it may actualy scare some would be attackers away. I would rather attack someone that isn't running around screaming like there crazy personaly lol. Wasn't a slight just a joke lol.
It may help if you run around screaming I am not a Craebear I am a This. Almost garunteed to stop would be attackers in there track. The more of that link you can do while running around the less likely to be attacked you are.
Mount&Blade is said to have a very simillar combat system.
You could try some FPS games i guess

I have nothing clever to say.
LOL relax, don't fear the PvP hell, this is not an arena game only wich you have a map loaded and only objective is to survive, it is supposed to be an MMO. You can start to practice some FPS game or Mount & Blade to get a feel about combat but IMO best way to learn is in game.
There will be training sessions i hope in your guilds town, good thing in DF you can use friendly training sessions with guildies to gain skills and xp (unique to every MMO as far known to me).

A little tip FFA PvP does not mean all will PvP it is an option, the risk of dying here in any fight is high enough to stop a lot of PvP especially when there will be no real reward. Loot and crafting materials for building will come from PvE.
Anything that puts you up against other players will do it is all about learning and practice. If you find that you never improve and always get battered then that is a shame, but that probably will not be the case.

The world is massive so running will sure not make it easy for some people to follow, especially if you do it in aggressive PvE environments.

Mount and Blade is definitely a good game.
