Just because a certain genre is over done doesn't make the whole genre bad. Every once and a while a realy good FPS comes out. With the FPS games being so prolific, even some of the substandard stuff is adequate due to the standard set by earlier games. Combat Arms is a good example since it falls way below the standard and is still entertaining in 45 minutes or less.
Lately I've been playing Frontlines: Fuel of War on the XBox 360. Yeah, it's a Battlefield clone, but they managed to do away with a number of things that I always hated about the BF series. Namely, they've broken the game down to a series of smaller objectives that are spaced closer together so I don't have to wander around the map looking for where the action is. What's more, I can get to where I need to be in a reasonable amount of time without having to find a vehicle.
I also really enjoyed the single player portion of Painkiller.
I currently play Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare and think it's the best tactical FPS game there is, specifically on HQ, SAB and S&D game types.
Call of Duty : World at War (CoD5) looks and sounds supreme, in my personal opinion i think it's gonna be THE FPS game out there when released next month.
CoD4 is a pseudo-FPS. I really think games that require you to stop movin/duck to get a workable Cone of fire should get their own genre. If 10 years of run and gun is wrong then i dont know what's right.
BF2142 and CoF4- it's ridiculous. You could spray full auto at someone ten feet away, but if you're passing by at a slow jog, you're rounds have an 8 ft spread. I know theres all these folks screaming about realism who have never fired a fully automatic weapon in their life- but what's the fun in that?
The last best shooter, the last best twitce based old-skool ground shooter, was F.E.A.R.
Unfortunately it wasnt available for the console peasants so it was never very popular. Who plays FPS with a thumbstick anyhow?
You know I actually havent tried Quake Wars because the servers are smaller. As much as I hate BF2142's rules-that-force-you-to-not-be-too-good, i've gotten pretty god damned good at the game. It's still no where near as fun as killing 5 people with insta-kill zero-cof headshots in about 2 seconds in a traditional shooter... but it'll do.

Hehe my friend, if you're good enough at CoD 4 and know how to play it, you can have the same kinda action that you crave in your old school shooters. Trust me on this, I can even tell you how if you're interested.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I'm kinda olde skool, if you can't tell...
Speaking of Quake 2....
Me and some friends just finished the Co-op or Die mod. This is probably the best mod for Quake 2, EVAH!
