What does the MMORPG future hold in store?
What games are you most looking forward to?
With one of the most promising games still an ambigious mess (Darkfall!).. I'm sort of on the fense for new games in the futre. Maybe I'm not seeing the ball? Or maybe nothing just seems promising enough to follow..
But, my question is, What games on the horizon look like they might be fun.. new.. and bring a little bit of something new to the genre?
Where do you think the genre is going for the future?
Currently playing Real Life..

Earth Rise and Fallen Earth look pretty cool.
Hopefully the Darkfall devs can pull of the impossible by bucking the trend and actually deliver what they promise for once. If they do, there will be a lot of happy people out there.
If a KOTOR MMO is announced at the end of the month as many people believe, that will be a major light at the end of the tunnel.
Aside from that, the future is looking pretty bleak.
Personally, I'm most looking forward to cross-platform Everquest that SOE has been hinting at.
Let the anti-SOE flames begin.....
But seriously, I've played a lot of MMOs, and none really grabbed me or gave me that true sense of immersion as EQOA on the PS2, EQ1 and EQ2. Say what you want about SOE and their lackluster support for games. But I think with the new management heirarchy at Sony, with the combintion of SOE and SCEA, and their focus on MMOs as a true profit point in the future for them, I think we'll all see a change to their dev teams and CS teams.
The Everquest franchise was always able to suck me in fully because of their focus on group play, as opposed to leveling 1-70 by myself as I did in WoW. PvP is fun, but the real reason I play MMORPG is not to kick the crap out of other players (that's what SOCOM's for), but rather to join a community with them, and via cooperative play, take down some really cool mobs, whether it's in the countryside or in a dungeon.
I hope that with SOE and Smedley's new proclaimed focus on PC/PS3 MMO's, we'll see a reincarnation of their flagship MMO with a new EQ that has the support, polish and flow of WoW, but the community and the immersion of EQ. Also, I miss being able to play on a console every now and again, and now have to screw around with video settings, etc. Although having the option to play one account on both a PC and a PS3 would be cool, especially if the girlfriend is boaggarting the PC with MySpace or whatever for the night ;-) Let's go, EQ:X !! (That's what I'm calling it for now )
As far as adding something we haven't seen before to the genre, I'd keep an eye out for Curt Schilling and 38 Studios mystery project, Copernicus - looks like they're up to something groundbreaking. Whatever it is, let's hope they get it right the first time, so Blizzard doesn't come along, steal it, and perfect it, and make a billion dollars a year on it. Although THAT game would probably be really sweet, too.
i am currently awaiting mortal online. there's an update tomorrow. praying for gameplay footage but not getting my hopes up.
Darkfall
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
Darkfall and possibly Earthrise look good to me, currently waiting for Star Trek Online as well, aside form those 3 MMO's no longer interest me. Biowares new game is also catching my eye with being a KOTOR fan but until features and content notes are released i'm staying quiet on it.
Spellborn and Fallen Earth for me.
/agree
I'm really looking forward to seeing Fallen Earth... I've been following them for quite a while and they definitely have some cool idea's.
"And after blizzard takes over the world, they are gonna gather a bunch of lemmings, sit on their fat asses near a cliff, and watch the little fuzzy bastards suicide dive into the ground below. . . . . all just for their own entertainment."
Tatsumaki: Land at War seems really intresting.
I'm kind of pessimistic at this point. I'm not really anticipating anything I want to play coming out in the near-ish future, expecially Darkfall. I just have no faith that it will be released in a decent state, if it's released at all. Yes, Yes, I know what people are saying but I still very much have doubts about it.
Having really enjoyed CoH/V (still do from time to time), I'd love it if Champions Online would deliver something good but I have no idea when to expect to see that game. I've been disappointed in AoC and WAR for various reasons and I don't plan on buying the WoW expansion or even playing again in the foreseeable future. On the "not an MMORPG" front, I'm rather looking forward to Diablo 3.
I hope you are right. A new EQ with WOW's polish but with a stinging death penatly and "TRAINS" (i.e., aggroed mobs that can attack other players outside the group that pulled them).
I do hope they get rid fo the heroic opportunity wheel and the nonsense about classes gaining new skills every level, even in the middle of a level. EQ2 had too many redundant features.
TCOS, jumpage evolution, and in the distant future The elder scrolls mmo that Zenimax is making, and perhaps the even more distant future the Kingdom under fire mmo that was annouced a couple of months ago.
Edit: forgot to mention Earthrise, and Stargate worlds look interesting. Interested in Stargate purely because I am a stargate fan, and Earthrise because last time I checked it seemed to lean towards PvP although I have not kept up with it so probably wrong about that.
Darkfall
Earthrise
Mortal Online
If any of those 3 are half decent games i'll be happy for a few years. Longer term Bioware's game (probably KOTOR) will be the big one to watch.
AION
Sword and Soul
Mabinogi:Heroes
Unfortunately at this time ... None ... I have not seen anything in the works that excites me at all that will be out anytime within the next 2 years.
The good news is I am currently having fun playing warhammer and hopefully by the time i get bored with that something else will pop up.
I have to say, I'm looking forward to ALL the new games. Darkfall, Mortal Online, Fallen Earth, Old Republic, Aion, Earthrise, Star Trek, WoD, whatever McFarlane and Salvatore are working on, etc. etc.
The skeptic in me says most of these will fail in some way, but that is a nice looking list of diversity and potential.
Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV
Only Darkfall really, some of the other games mentioned are months/years from release.
Major Hyped for:
Darkfall (if not vapors), earthrise, WELL, Fallen Earth, APB *
Champions Online
Spellborn (hoping pvp is at least half decent)
Jumpgate Evolution (might be down)
Blade and Soul. pls god let it come, come soon, and not suck
Sig
March on! - Lets Invade Pekopon
DCUO
for me personaly it is darkfall. It looks like alot of fun to me i just hope it comes out sometime. also huxely cuz i wanna play a mmofps. but that will never come out. . . . . . ever
I have to go with The Agency.
I'd really like to see some expansion away from the swords and sorcery, and fly the spaceship, MMORPGs. Too bad POTBS wasn't done right, I had hopes that would break the mold, but it was just WOW in sailing ships.
Hopefully The Agency will break the mold. Be kind of refreshing if, instead of shooting it out all game, you can work on keeping your cover by going gambling, or to a disco, as something different.
Really looking forward to Earthrise, Jumpgate Evolution, Fallen Earth.
Mildly looking forward to Stargate Worlds(because I like Stargate), and KotOR mmo, but I have a feeling that game is going to be "NGE done right" play style.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
SgtFrog, don't hold your breath for Lineage 3. Chances are it won't come for a decade after NCSofts other flagships have lived passed thier prime. The main reason is the previous problems with Lineage 3 where former developers sold code to competing companies, as well as the lead developers leaving NCSoft and making thier own competing company. So I am pretty sure Lineage 3 in that form has been scrapped, but it might be done again in the future under a different form.
