Ashen Crytal - what is it for?

As I commence with the quest, a question was ask about Ashen Crystal - What does it do? And how to use it?

Ashen crystals are for upgrading basic mercenaries. You need around 50-100 depending on what level upgrade you are going for. They are pretty cheap, compared to the other crystals needed to upgrade the other mercenaries later in the game. These cost around 1k per... the others maybe 30k

Well, this is used to upgrade class d mercenary to there grade 3 and grade 2 form.
What do i mean by these terms?
Well, Class D are Sworsman, Spearman, Monk, Shaman, and Gunner mercenaries.
For you to know there upgrade form you can check the atlanticawebsite or ingame though the game info button.
I've used Ashen Crystals for upgrading my mercenaries. I have not known the technical terms, but their armor changes whenever I upgrade them. Maybe the above posts explain it more. So far, that is all I know about Ashen Crystals.
Aside from mercenary upgrades, ashen crystals is used in some crafting as materials. ^-^
For example is when crafting a mutihued crystal. It makes use of 1 Phoenix Crystal, 1Giant Crystal, 1 Redemption Crystal and 1 Ashen Crystal.
And of course, the posts above says the rest.
earlier, i also did a quest involving the use of ashen crystals. this was the quest given by jayavarman near phnom penh. it required making a ring of vitalilty (though i still don't know why this is important but he said it is)
well anyway, that ring needs 2 ashen crystals to make.
so there's another use for the ashen crystals.
