Max Payne the Movie

So from what I hear the rating got docked from R to PG-13 but is still rather violent. I also heard Marky Mark does a very tight-rope style acting job in the movie and is filled with mediocre co-stars. Last there is no mention so far of "Dick Justice" in the movie anywhere. For some reason though I am still excited to see it. Anyone else looking forward to it despite some possible bad choices made in developing the movie?

    It's pg-13? How is it not R?

The story is, murder, drugs, sex, violence, and more murder.

But the game basically left little to the imagination for screenwriting, so if they just follow it's tune, they should be bueno.

To answer your question. I am looking forward to it. I would like to get the poster.

I'm looking forward to it! I always look forward on game movies (even if I haven't played the game... but my brother did!)!

They did the same thing to Hitman which was also one of my favorite series. It just does not seem the same without the real tough in your face action.

of course they would tone down the violence and stuff.. i hope they'd stick with the storyline and the gore as well

The reason they do this is because teenagers spend the most out of any age group on entertainment.  Unfortunately the people reposonsible for the dollars and cents have no common sense.

They did this with Alien Vs. Predator.  4 Aliens movies, 2 Predator movies, all rated R- spanning over 20 years.  AVP1?  PG-13.  PG-13 when the fans of those movies, even as small children, are well into their 20's.

Needless to say after AVP1's dismal sales AVP2 was rated R and pushed out with a splatter-filled trailer as a way of saying "we're sorry."

And Max Payne?  Isn't that game older than dirt as far as games go?  How many 13-16 year olds RIGHT NOW even know what a Max Payne is?  Is it that new space age window that saves money on your heating bills?

You have got to be f**king kidding me Hollywood.  I understand these aren't good movies to begin with, but we want our trashy B-flicks to be trashy.  I was honestly considering going to the theatre to see this movie on the big screen for the action sequences.  But now that I know all the naughty language is gone and that I am getting a soft-core kid-friendly version of the film- I'll be seeing it via a torrent site near you.

I thought it was a good movie too to me though it was not the definitive Hitman flick I had hoped for. They had a nice story though which is a change for VG movies.

I loved Max Payne the game, so I wish the movie would do it justice, and make it decent (I'm not expecting good anyway)

My dad watched the Hitman movie and he said it was pretty good. I'm looking forward to Max Payne the Movie. That was the first game to make me tear up (the begining of the game). It really played with your emotions. I hope the movie does the same.

I thought the same the only referance I can think of is in the fake TV show which you could watch in game called "Address Unkown". In of the first episodes the lead character does referance "The Flesh of fallen Angels" but really thats it, other than that I really do not know what it is all about. I am seeing it tomorow  which afterwards I will give a review of the movie. From the stand point of a huge fan and follower that is.

From what I've heard, the performance of Mark Wahlberg in the movie was quite cool, since he shows no emotions, though it is quite boring. It doesn't keep my concentration to its peek. I didn't enjoy myself. lol

i hope that this movie wont be a flop and boring like catwoman and the 1st hulk movie.. btw who will be the lead star and lead woman?

are there any trailers for this movie? like in youtuber or elsewhere?

The "demons", actually make a bit of sense. The nightmare moments in the game would not have translated well into the movie. And if my hunch is right, those aren't suppose to actually be demons, but are symbolic of the drug, valkyrie's being winged creatures.

But honestly...What the hell is with ludacris being in the film? And as Jim Bravura at that? If the character was black, which he wasn't, he would have been someone like...James Earl Jones, not Ludacris...Annoying, hate hollywood.

I find coincidental amusement that Beau Bridges plays "B.B".

Be curious how Mila Kunis plays Mona, similar look, but hope to God she does well at masking her voice.

Ok everyone I have returned from the movies where I saw Max Payne tonight and I am prepared to give you all a review from Rosie. So I will break this up into several categories to make it easy.

Story: I for one though the movie had a very fitting story which branched the actual story of max payne and put it into a less fantastical version. The movie has a very linear story with really only one twist which of course you see coming the entire movie. The story in my opinion is stressed to make itself seem more fanatic then it really is but by no means is it a bad story. It was not a strong screen play but it was enough to satisfy me as a long time Payne fan. More or less I consider the story to be part of a bigger branch leading to more Payne movies using the first movie as more of a platform for violence. Which brings me to my next part.

Action: Before I saw the movies I read some reviews saying that the main action was no until the last 10 minutes or so of the movie. Trust me the action may be thin at the beginning but not just the last ten minutes is action. There is a great action sequence that happens just after the half way mark and it continues building after that. To me it seems the director of this movie grasped the concept of theatrical foreplay by having very small action sequences in the first half of the movie as almost a tease. Then he lets loose with a large taste of action right after the half way mark which gets you ready for the big finale. Also the bullet time backwards shotgun kill was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in a movie. If anything they should included more bullet time but to be honest its been used to death in movies so I am glad they slimmed down on it a bit. Plus the enitre time Payne has this calm but uneasy look on his face which brings me now to acting.

Characters/Acting: To me I think Marky Mark did a great job playing Payne and honestly I could not have seen someone else play the role better. His emotions and facial expressions and especially movements(like carring the shotgun) were text book Payne which at least shows that he looked at the game before signing a contract. The rest of the movie characters are forgetable except for a sultry young lady who attempts to stoop Payne early in the movie. During her whole "Lets get undressed scene" I thought to myself "I can not wait for the Unrated version".  Mila Kunis bless her heart. You can tell she really tried with this role and put forth alot of effort but sadly she just was not the right pick for this role. Her very young voice slipped alot especially during a scene with Payne shere she exclaims "Dont say her name!" and I could tell everyone around me noticed too. She did pull her weight though more towards the end and I think if a sequel was made she might be able to learn to tone her voice better and portray the role much clearer. Speaking of the ending.

The Ending: To me the ending is everything with a great movie because its what you leave the theater remembering the most of. To me Max Payne ending serves its purpose right by throwing all of the tricks you had seen through out the movie into one giant Grab bag of Action, excitement, and intrigue. To me it ends the way I imagine a Payne movie ending but I can not spoil that for you. Also stay after the credits to get a glimpse of what Payne 2 might be about if made. Which brings me to my end notes and ideas about a sequel.

End Notes/ Possible Sequel: To me Max Payne is a good movie with a decent story a few great memorable actions scenes and one very great memorable character. What pulls the movie down is the bad picks for co-stars and lack of a real twist or enemy to be taken down that we have not seen in movies already a thousand times. If you played Max Payne will you like it? It takes enough from the games to warrent a watch I can tell you that much. If your a regular movie goer will you enjoy it? I think if you stick with it to the end you will leave with your monies worth. Its a tough bite to swallow at first (at least a few of the people I was with told me that had not played the game) but ultimatly the end redeems the movie full force. About a sequel I think its a definite possibility with the ending after the credits leaving the "Man behind the curtain" as the next target. Also I think since the first was very story driven it would typical hollywood fashion to make a sequel stand out as more action driven and more in your face. Possibly even garnering a R rating which I think is needed for the sequel. Thanks for reading everyone.

    Gotta say. Was dissapointed.

Mila Kunis as Mona Sax was just bad...Actually, horrible. I think she was a really poor pick, and couldn't pull off the badass character if it was required to save her life. And the whole "big sister" part they put on it served no purpose.

Ludacris being put in as Jim Bravura was inane. Ludacris as a job is laughable. As a cop who in the game was the deputy chief, and in movie was IA, is even worse. If he played a low level thug, that would have been alot more believable.

Mark Wahlberg wasn't a bad pick, but I have two pet peeves with his character. The first being, his voice. He got the gravelly noir sound down at the beginning of the movie when he was doing the flash back. The second being(And this was an issue with all the characters in the movie, particularly him and mona), there was no humor. No real emotion.

Max payne was always a big of a cynical smartass in the games. He made wisecracks, found humor in things that would be all but humorous, would crack a grin when a gun was to his face. There was none of that. He was more or less soulless and vengeful.

And action...Only for the last 20 minutes or so. The rest of it went on at a dreary and boring pace.

Also wasn't valkyr originally green, not blue?

Anyhow, I was disappointed. Changed alot of things they shouldn't have. Added in things that were dead and pointless. The movie had a poor script, and a poor direction. The ambience and city fit real well for a movie. Mark Wahlberg was a decent Max Payne. But there was nothing to work with. It was a boring canvas. Even though the last 20 minutes were action filled, being a fan of the games, I was pissed and disappointed.

I agree with alot of your points I think it was a step in the right direction for a series. You are right it was a bad start to a series that should have been tottaly different.  I think it should have just been an older cast, more complex plot, and should have been R. The one thing that the director got wrong is when alot of us played the game we were 16-18 years old. That was in 2000 alot of us are older now and the reasons we liked the game when we were younger was because of how Mature it was to begin with. Just my opinion though to what the series( if there is one) seems to be aiming for it could get alot better from here. Just it should have been different from the beginning.

So damn dissapointing because Wahlberg could have really brought Max Payne to life.  Maybe in 20 years one his nephews will be involved in the remake that gets it right.  And everyone will complain about how the original was soooo much better and blah blah blah.

  • PotatPotat Member Posts: 5

Lol. Atleast Mark did the best he can, but the plot of the movie itself is really not quite interesting since the game itself is solely based on the movie matrix, so it just a follow up movie from matrix with a different character.
