We all have rose glasses of games we played back in the day. these were often our first MMORPGs that .. we all remember fondly.
I've made a list of games that really started off the genre. I've included WoW because it brought in a lot of people.. and a lot of people still play and enjoy it. I have not included Warhammer because it was recently released, as was AoC.
the list represents the games in their prime only.. or the time you remember as the funniest.

anyway the game that got me hooked to mmo was lineage.
March on! - Lets Invade Pekopon
In all of my years of MMO gaming I would say it is a tie between
Asheron's Call
and
Lineage 2
Guild Wars.
Ac 1.Still hoping for a remake of this game with updated graphics and content, world. But do not touch game mechanics, leveling system or seamless world.Leave them intact
Runescape would be mine although i think ryzom and atlantica would be close aswell
AC1 for me as well. I'd toss Warhammer in the garbage without a moments hesitation, and gladly go back to AC1 again if Turbine was able (or willing) to merge servers and maintain a decent population. But it's just too sad playing that game in a deserted world after knowing it for what it once was. AC1 had so many terrific features that you just don't see in MMORPGs anymore. Randomly generated loot, amazing variety of damage types (and strategies/gear needed to counter them), skill based character development, very good crafting, and a massive seemless world full of interesting features and content. And this is just to mention a few.
I'd also give honorable mention to Pre-CU Star Wars Galaxies. Yet how the same devs who created that truly revolutionary game could later make so many bone headed choices, is beyond me. And I'm talking about even before the CU or NGE.
