Still No Hard Press!!!

I recently purchased a monthly PC Gamer Magazine and got a small freeby mag called "What MMO". Inside is a load or bumph about various MMOs due for release etc. My horror cam at the centre spred which read...

WHAT MMO?

Working out which online universe is for you can be a grind. To make your decision that little bit easier, here's out round up of the biggests MMOs around.

I won't spell out the whole article but here is the list.

AOCM, ARCHLORD, AIR RIVALS, ASHERON'S CALL, BOUNTY BAY ONLINE, CITY OF HEROES, DAoC, D&D ONLINE, EVE ONLINE, EQ2, FF XI, FURY, GUILD WARS, LINEAGE 2, LotR Online, Matrix, RF Online, SWG, Sword of the new World, Tabula Rasa, A tale in the Desert, Ultima Online, WoW, World War 2 Online.

I don't doubt that some of these games are great MMOs, but others I don't care to mention are downright rubbish, and I can't for the life of me understand why they have been included ahead of VG. I like VG and want it to succeed, but if it can't get so much as a mention in "WHAT MMO?", its chances are slim.

As I see it, problem is SOE has done quiet a bit to fix VG and, I think, it's now a decent/good MMO. Problem is...they aren't doing a lot to put it out there.

Sig so that badges don't eat my posts.

The population on Vanguards servers are riseing tough. Mostly due to the fact that there are a lot of people unsatisfied by AoC and WAR, and they want something a little more imersive. SOE have also released the free noob trail area of Isle of Dawn, which have a really dense pop. (at least on the Halgar EU server).

For now, word of mouth seems to be doing well for Vanguard.  But Sony needs to do a better job doing at least some marketing.  And if I remember correctly, PCGamer had a decent review of Vanguard and an OK rating upon release.

Seems like an ill-informed article. Isn't Fury dead now? I wouldn't read too much into it.

I started playing VG the other day. I'm still getting to grips with it, but I'm enjoying it which is the main thing.

Yeah i have to say since VG released and didn't do too hot I haven't really heard much about it anywhere. I thought it might have been dead or something. The thing is most games when released can make a huge nose dive like VG did if things aren't working perfectly. My question is how populated is this game these days? Are new people starting to join now that things are apparently fixed or because people can finally afford a pc that can play it?

Basing a games chances of success on mention or lack thereof in a freebie, most likely barely researched throw in is not exactly scientific. Looks to me like they grabbed a few names at random and called them some of the biggest out there.

I suppose it isn't scientific taking one magazine(a freebee at that), so lets take another. The Magazine it came with for example.

PCG Big Game Hunt  (The Best Games on PC)

    Genre - Massively Multiplayer

Modern Great - World of Warcraft.  Alternative - Eve Online.  Genre Classic - City of Heroes.

Also recommended - LotR Online, SWG, DAoC, AoC, Tabula Rasa, Guild Wars, Second Life, City of Villains.

So as you can see, still no mention of Vanguard, and I bet you a pound to a penny it's the same in PC Zone.

I am not basing the game's success on just these two magazines. I am merely saying it cannott be a "Modern Great" by word of mouth alone. I mean for Pete's sake, half the people I talk to think Vanguard is a nuclear class submarine.

I whole heartedly agree that PC Gamer is a shitty magazine.  But maybe you better lookup the definition of Genre.  Genre means "niche" game.  And City of Heroes definitely qualifies.  EQ and EQ2 would be "Old Style Classics", not Genre games per se.

"Genres are vague categories with no fixed boundaries, they are formed by sets of conventions, and many works cross into multiple genres by way of borrowing and recombining these conventions. The scope of the word "genre" is sometimes confined to art and culture, particularly literature, but it has a long history in rhetoric as well. In genre studies the concept of genre is not compared to originality. Rather, all works are recognized as either reflecting on or participating in the conventions of genre." - Wikipedia

Nothing to do with 'niche' really?

    Genre = MMORPGs

EQ = a true genre classic.

At least thats how I read it.

CoH... hehe nah... it's good, but not classic. It's like comparing The Monkees to The Beatles.... Some people might prefer it, but it isnt really in the same league.

EQ2 AND VG don't make it into the recommends even? Wow... thats some snub to SOE... Someone on that mag staff dosent like this company much eh?

The following is the definion of the word genre:

    1. a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content, technique, or the like: the genre of epic poetry; the genre of symphonic music.

    2. Fine Arts. a. paintings in which scenes of everyday life form the subject matter.

    b. a realistic style of painting using such subject matter.

    3. genus; kind; sort; style.

–adjective 4. Fine Arts. of or pertaining to genre.

    5. of or pertaining to a distinctive literary type.

I do not see Niche game in the definition. Genre would be the type of game such as Sci-fi MMO would be a genre or in video games MMO itself is a genre. Genre is not niche.

Are half the people you talk to in the Navy? Word of mouth is one of the best ways to get people playing. So is online advertising of the trial. Magazines are less reliable since it is obvious the writers are clueless since they include TR as worth playing and that game is a bomb. They are still pushing Guild Wars and while it is a good game GW2 is in the works and GW will fade a good bit then.

Look at WoW, seems to me they advertised much harder after they had millions of subs. They can afford to do anything they want. That is what happens when you make a game that popular. Word of mouth can help Vanguard and according to the devs the trial is already helping.
