I played it, but uninstalled it due to the fact it's a hardcore MMO where you need to invest allll your time on it to be successful. I just wish I could of got into it when it was first released. I'm not even looking at it anymore.
I would suggest waiting for darkfall, but if you want to play eve, start with reading the noob chat and ask questions there , people are really happy to help, also get into a good corporation, there are noob friendly corps out there, i found eve fun for awhile but got bored with the lack of missions, and it really should be called mining online, how many smutkings are there anyway lol, never log out in jita, and dont open any canisters you find in space as that is a trap.
playing eq2 and two worlds
Not true. EVE is a very casual friendly game. Casual players and hardcore players alike can play and enjoy themselves. EVE is what you make it. If you like PvP as much as you say, then I think you will love EVE. It is NOT an easy game. It's not easy to learn, and not that easy to play. It's a game that subscribes to a different form of "easy to learn, hard to master". Basically, once you learn the basics it becomes pretty second nature.. BUT, there are a ridiculous amount of other things that take a lot of time to master and understand. You can be playing for a year or more and still learn something new about the game that enhances your experience.
They're about to be adding certificates, which will help new players begin to understand the game a lot better as well.
The game is new player Harsh very Harsh you need to get in a Corperation and start training skills problem is you can only train one skill at a time and some higher level skills take 60days. Your always gonna be mining or giving minerals to corp and you will be last one to get asked to pvp. This will continue on for 1 to 2 years as the skill training is now.

Nice misinformation. Let me give you somthing that your post is lacking a lot: ,,,,,,,......;;;
Have fun with them.
Anyways, eve is harsh for everyone. Everyone can carve their way through it and find some area(s) he/she likes. It's not exactly easy, but it can properly reproduce the old elite or privateers feeling.
And as long as you are not intimidated by other people who played longer than you, you'll probably even succeed.
Notice in the above sig " Pod Killer " ask the gentelmen what that means.

My hobby of collecting corpses does not matter here.
Besides, most of the previous owners of my fine frozen corpses have been at least double my age at the time of their passing.
The gentlemen the boasts the title " Pod Killer " are some of the reasons the newer folks have problems and leave the game. CCP knows this and is starting to change some things and my guess will head to a new gaming experience like sony did to keep subs.

Dont cry [hands over hanky]. So you failed at EvE such a shame but in the end there are plenty of others who adapt to EvE's gameworld and have a lot of fun.

To pull this thread back on topic...
I think you might enjoy the game. I think a lot of people equate the learning curve to how "hardcore" of a player you must be, but the mechanics of the game itself allow a lot of leeway for the casual player, the most notable of which being your skills train even while you AREN'T logged in!
I came from DAoC where I had to constantly be levelling. In EVE I could find time during play sessions to just dock my ship, put a couple things on market, go do my homework and watch my little Ishtar bob up and down in the hangar. Or I could gang up with a couple corp friends and roam around 0.0 space looking for prey. Mining a a great way to make isk but not have to devote your entire attention to the game(if you're in high-sec).
Granted it's a very harsh and cold game where venturing in the wrong areas or ticking of the wrong people WILL get you popped, but that's all part of the fun.
I'm a very casual player and EVE is the only game to truly hold my attention throuh all the garbage that's been released over the past 2 years.
Basically what you want to do is if you're serious about playing:
1) Find a group of people you get along with and either create a corp with them or join there's. Corps come in all different kinds of flavors, like industrial, PvE missions, PvP in empire/low-sec/0.0, mining, invetion, and even freight (like a truckers union). Playing with a group of like-minded people will make the difference between being lost and lonely and having a good time.
2) Don't try and get the biggest and the best. Take it slow, start with small ships and be sure every skill the ship uses is at a Tier-2 level before moving up. Else you'll find yourself in a lot of hurt when you finally move up to that Battleship but your guns hit like wet noodles and your defenses are like paper.
3) The game isn't as complicated as it looks on paper. I suggest logging in, finishing the tutorials and giving a little game-time to a couple areas of play and see what you like most and simply DO what you want to do rather than wondering if you're doing it "right" or if it's the "best" option for you. There is no right or best, and that's not a cliche
Look me up sometime, I'm on a trial account right now named BobLoblaw LawBomb but my main character when I have money to play is Scarlet Maximus.

It does not change the fact that this game is not newbie friendly and more experienced players take advantage of it.

I to feel that you MAY like this game. For EvE is primarily PvP unlike other online games when Right from the begining even in the games intitial conception PvP was at the forefront of eve followed closely by the completly player run market idea and finally the NPC eliment.
What this means it that EvE is basically a PvP game with a decent market and crafting system. However it is worth mentoning that EvE is not a safe and easy place to reside in as its full of other players in the low security zones who will quite happily kill you just as something to do rahter than for some point.
Also if you join a corp [and i advise that you do as it makes things a little easier] you will like every other member be expected to occasionally do your bit as the corp runs on money and resources in order to get you your free ships and modules. If you are into PvP make that clear from the start and if you chose the right sort of corp they should begine teaching you how to PvP in EvE.
This training will of course start with the frigate based stuff as that will e all you can fly and afford to begine with but in time as your skills in EvE PvP grows as does your skills you will progress to biger and better ships [which will also be given to you if its the right sort of corp].
Now a couple of times i have refered to 'the right sort of corp'. What this mainly refers to the the manerisms you can get with corps.
there is the type of corp that embraces you like a brother gives you a new better ship and some nice gear and takes you along with one of its newbie frigate hunter squads to aprtake in some actuall PvP in return for whatever time YOU CAN SPARE to mine ore or protect the miners from NPC pirates.
Then there is the sort of Corp that Elsabolts joined which is what i jokingly call the Collective. where you are welcomed by the corp when you join then are given a free frigate then told that like everyone else to hep the corp grow you need to mine ore so they can build ships. If you ask to learn to PvP you will usually be told that it sounds good but not right now then some excuse wil be provided like your skills are not ready yet or the PvP guy is too buisy right now. Point is you are turned into a inteligent Mining drone fror the corps leader and his friends [one among many probably].
And it will probably be many months before they give you that nice shiny new Battleship you want to PvP in and what do you end up doing in it you ask? You mine ore for the corp because you dont know how to PvP and you cant risk losing your ship as you at most earn a million or 2 per hour as most of your time by then is spent mining for the corp so you can get a replacement Battleship if you lose the one you have.
Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981
This is really good advice, especially number 2. I've found that a lot of players want to be an uber space pilot, so they quickly train skills for a battleship without being able (or knowing how) to fit it correctly, then they get taken down by a younger player in a lesser ship and say the game is unfair. I call it the "WOW" effect.
Each ship has multiple roles, advantages, and abilities. To be good at PVP you really need to take the time to learn about each one.
Still, I would argue that there is a lot of complexity to the game. Especially when it comes to being a good PVP pilot. You want to try to get as many things working in you favor as possible, and this can be fairly complex. Ship bonuses, ship equipment, your location, your opponent; Eve has many angles a PVP pilot can exploit.
Now ask him how he -got- the title. By providing something helpful to the EVE portion of this site.
It is not easy too say one way or the other with Eve. You see Eve is unlike any other title out there. It has a level of complexity that is incredable, I have played it on and off for years and there are still areas and "careers" in Eve I have never played with. For instance capitol class ships can take years to get into. Player Owned Structures are another area of the game. Some may say these are "end game" aspects but what I have seen of Eve there is no "end". No max level, no I win button, no perfect gear drop. Perhapes that is the best aspect of Eve. It would literally take decades to learn all the skills-decades.
I can tell you this- get into a player corporation, especially a low-sec capable group. You can be a loner in Eve, I have been there. I have also been in a first rate PvP corp and 0.0 space holding alliance. I am telling you that you are seriously missing out on some FUN if you don't get yourself into a GOOD corp. Eve is best when played with mates. It transforms a vast empty game world into a solid goal driven environment that is as different form solo play as night is from day. Joining a corp as a noob is probably going to be the difference between playing for 2 weeks and playing for years.
One last thing, you can not play Eve half a$$ed and expect to be good at it. You have to read the forums , listen to mates that have been playing for years and have a PLAN for everything. You should have a plan for making isk, a plan for fighting and a plan for training. Pick a ship class and weapon system for it and train straight for them after you get the basics out of the way. If you keep playing around with different ships and races you will whind up very frusterated getting podded over and over again, not that you wont die allot anyway. That reminds me...expect to die...ALLOT. Good Luck and don't fall for that fly safe crap...dock safe but ALWAYS fly deadly!
Don't listen to anyone here.
Go try the free trial, do it as many times as needed.

It took me four trials before I understood what EVE was about. I loved it from the moment I first loaded into my ship but EVE is a hard game to learn. It definitely isn't an instant gratification game and there is no 'look at my purple gear' nonsense. The only ones who show off their 'purple gear' are little kids who have only been playing the game for a week, buy ISK, buy an expensive ship and lose it the moment they undock in it because they have no idea how EVE works.
There is a great help channel in EVE and many people are more than willing to help, though it gets trolled at times (I am guilty of that ). I found the comunity in EVE much more friendly than the people in WOW, Lineage and other MMO's because you have a lot less people like running around everywhere thinking they're it. You do have them of course and you have your occasional lunatic but they can be ignored and are funny at times.
If ever you decide to stay in EVE and buy a time card let me know. I'll start you off with some cash.
We do have those people, they're called Ernest :P
To the OP; EVE is a great MMO if you like to put in effort into things and like to have choices rather than being pointed to what to do. It doesn't hold your hand and there's no safety net.
Eve is a simply wonderful game its is so amazing and has one maybe two major issues that are game breaking TO ME:
1) group missions plz (i want to play together plz , and be rewarded) [only a minor bother]
2) the combat (this is the real issues). The games combat is boring and hardly interactive or skillful. If they replace the toggle weapons and orbit key with a space fight sim (like tie fighter vs x-wing) i would never stop playing this game.
Seriously, the game has a ton to offer, i really like it i just can't handle its combat system , but you may like it so give it a try you can get free trials for it.

It took me 3 trials before I subscribed. And only after one month I started to understand the game.
It really requires patience, but it pays off eventually. Great game.
Also getting a bigger ship is a good thing if you want to do missions that pay better. Fast ISK. But expect to be killed in PvP. PvP is a different game.
Well, if I don't want to pvp. Am I confined to my own star system or whatever its called. Because I hear people just wait at jump gates and gank people. So even if eve is what you make of it. That sounds lame.

If you don't want to PvP, you can stay in .5 and higher security systems. The higher the security, the faster Concord responds if you get attacked. Below that, there is no concord to help you if you're attacked. There are people who play for years and have never been killed by another person unless they were purposely partaking in PvP. There -are- people who will suicide in attempt to kill you and let their friends pick up the loot, but that's assuming you are carrying something that will net them a profit higher than their loss. Pirating is a business. If they're losing more money than they're making, then they're not doing something right. So, odds are if you're smart you will have no problems.
I don't see Ryzom on your list ... so sad
No you can roam as you wish. Empire space is higher security and thus it is a lot less likely to get "ganked". People complian a lot about the suicide gank but I have never seen one in action so they are a lot rarer than some would have you believe.
