Virtually EVERYTHING this Dev team has delivered in the past year is nothing but EQ2 junk sprayed with token Star Wars juice and bolted onto the NGE?
Which is sad because EQ2 is a lot less wow like ironically than the NGE. It's a far more complex game.
Collections? EQ2 code
Instances EQ2 code
Even the new "badge" screen crap is a copy of the EQ2 one.
Most of the base artwork (reworked by the 1 artist SWG has who sprays it with SWG juice) from EQ2. The Exar Kun temple instance looks exactly like a EQ2 castle with minor art mods.
Halloween event. Yep, EQ2 code. I played EQ2 through this once, same exact crap.
All that the NGE is getting is leftovers from EQ2 translated by a bunch of college interns who call themselves "Devs" who probably never saw the Trilogy in a theater ever.

What ! SOE taking short cuts from their flagship title to prop up the ever ailing NGE?
Say it isn't so, Joe!

Dont diss EQ2 , dont EVER diss EQ2 , EQ2 its way more of a game than this NGE crap was ever meant to be ...
Gief pre-cu back ... plx ...
i wonder if they will re-hash crap for the dcmmo too.
Given that their Dev team is now largely made up of failed NGE developers, including their managers, the answer is of course yes. There isn't an ounce of creativity or talent in that bunch.
They've scraped so far down the bottom of the barrel for DCMMO devs they've literally scraped through it.
Now, SOE does have some very talented people left. They all work on the EQ games. SOE doesn't DARE pull them over to DCMMO because those games are paying the bills and literally keeping the lights on.
Imagine the reaction of the EQ bunch if they woke up one day and found someone like Blixtev or Helios running their game?
SOE's most serious problem as a company is their inability to attract top industry talent. So they have to try to develop it, by hiring noobdevs and setting them loose on turd games like the NGE, where they can do little harm to SOE overall (SWG ceased to be a significant moneymaker as everyone knows, after 2005).
Why would a top tier Dev want to go to work for SOE? The company has the worst reputation in the industry, your boss would be the most reviled name in the industry (Smed), and they've already used and abused top talent before (Raph).
Well, obviously they wouldn't. I can't even figure out why a crappy developer would want to work for them. It would probably be the last game development job you would ever have as nobody else would want to hire you after Sony had ruined you.
But this raises an interesting question in my mind. Who are these "top talent" guys and where are they? What companies are they willing to work for and what games are they currently developing? Because honestly, all I ever seem to hear about are bad developers and unproven developers.
On the one hand you have the unproven guys, like the team that worked on Shadowbane that just came out of nowhere one day and said they were going to develop the best MMO of all time, even though their company was brand new and none of their devs had ever made a single game before that. And I think we all know how that little project turned out. Now we have the Darkfall devs following in their foot steps, another no-name company that appeared out of thin air with supposed abilities of doom, yet none of them have ever worked on a game before or made any kind of name for themselves.
Then on the other hand we have the uber-famous developers like Richard Garriot, who is now mostly famous for leaving Tabula Rasa to die while he went to screw around in space. Or Smed, who is obviously hated by everyone. We all know about these guys and they all get paid huge sums of money... but for what? They suck at their jobs. Can't hardly call these people top talent.
So who, in the MMO industry, is actually top talent and where are these people? And why in the hell don't we have some good MMOs to show for their work? Is it possible that these supposed top talent guys don't even exist and all MMO developers are just naturally incompetent, greedy and cruel? Because thats the impression I get when I look at the games we have on the market these days.
The History of the Order of The Golden Shields
Of course they're porting things over from their other games. What the hell do you expect from a development team of 20 people?

Almost all of the talented folks from the EQ2 dev team, along with one of the only community people that wasn't a douche bag at SOE, are now working at 38 Studios. The EQ2 devs that are left may not be as bad as the SWG team, but they share similar views towards their customers, and some are even willing to provide bug reports to their guild in order to expliot to gain epic gear.

Would have to say that the top tier devs went to work for companies that pay top dollar salaries. This means they answer to what the company wants based on market reports and think tanks. So top tier devs get locked into status quo of online gaming, imitate those who are successful as originality is not being rewarded as much. Or at least that is the current trend of companies at this time. We will have to wait and see if Bioware or others can break the current cycle by breaking the mold of what MMO's are and should be.
SWG needs a lot more of the systems that you see in games like EQ2, looking for guild interface, mentoring system and things of that nature are standard fare in modern MMORPGS.
SWG is still struggling to catch up with it's shock change from simulated world to mainstream MMORPG, these systems should have been implemented years ago.
Hey Badger,
I am not a fan of the NGE and all that it has brought. In fact I eagerly await the new. But never let it be said I wish you ill will or harm. I feel you have done the best to give to this community all you can. Right or wrong.
I am looking to come with Bioware. SWG is a dead game to me. Maybe I will see you in the new one and we can all have a round of beers and hookers.
Keep the faith and don't let anyone get you down, especially me.
Not that I'm anyone special...
Good luck....

Personally I just wish one day that all the development companies would take a few steps back. So they could realize that the core development process almost all of them choose to follow.. is why their games suck. (that would be a wall of text about the level/uber loot process and nobody would want to read that).
<fast forward>
While "looking for group" and guild tools would be nice.
They would probably be more useful in a game where you can actually find something with them. Even in EQ2 the only really populated server is Antonia Bayle. Yes obviously people play on the other servers.. but I believe if you've played EQ2 much you know what I am talking about.
Oh and mentoring... wouldn't even need to waste resources on a system like that.. in a skill based game.
Then again you would have player crafting .. where people could actually sell crafted items on a long term and consistent basis.
Oh wait... lol I said I wasn't going to do the wall of text.
I will totally agree with one thing..
SWG needed something implemented years ago...
A roll back (or classic server).
I thought your group search tools were going to cure all ills? (instead, as predicted, about all it does is help people to know there isn't anyone else on their server).
And btw, SWG's biggest problem is that it WAS switched from a simulated world to a "wow clone" (which is what is meant by mainstream MMO) , ie it went from the game it's player base wanted to a game they didn't want.
BTW, care to provide any backing for your "more players than ever" comment?
I don't think I ever said that the player search tool would solve every problem that SWG has created for itself in it's lifetime, but the system is being used and players are finding it very useful, which was what I wanted to see.
I'm sure we're all familiar with the why's and how's of the NGE, there's not really anything more to debate on that.
I noticed the thread about my "more players than ever" comment, claiming I was insane. It's possible that we all see what we want to see, but for me the top nine most populated servers (Europe-Chimaera, Bria, Starsider, Bloodfin, Europe-FarStar, Ahazi, Chilastra, Flurry and Gorath) are very busy and growing, but that then leaves 16 servers with populations that are under-achieving.
There's no denying that the whole Ultima Online shard concept of how to build an MMO certainly causes a lot of problems in the way that it isolates players from each other. I was speaking with some of the DCUO team about this recently and they are keen to ensure that players can play together and not be restricted in the ways that shard architecture works for the design of their game.
I was hoping for more from recent DevH's efforts on SWG than a free one time transfer off of low population servers to medium population servers, I would have thought that this would make the problem worse on those servers for those that choose to stay?
Who can fathom the ways of SoE? One moment it's "We want to give you reasons to stay", the next it's "Everyone transfer!".
If players of low population servers (Kettemoor, Eclipse, Sunrunner, Europe-Infinity, Valcyn, Scylla, Tarquinas and Kauri) can transfer for free to medium population servers (Tempest, Corbantis, Shadowfire, Intrepid, Lowca, Radiant, Naritus or Wanderhome), then what happens to the low population servers?
Is the idea to allow players to move of their own volition to reduce to load for the forced packup/transfer to come?
Seems very harsh in a game where player cities exist, but I can see SoE's justification for it. I did some polls on the official forums a while back and almost every player would move from low populations to high ones if the restrictions on cost, unlocked slot, resources and crates were resolved, and it looks like they have.
There's a lot of demand for this solution, if it leads to a normalisation of server population then that would be great, but we're still limited by shard architecture.
I kind of ran on with this post so I'm going to hit submit now...
All SWG servers are dead compared to what we had Pre NGE , anybody who says otherwise is fibbing bigtime , That being said second rate everything is what SWG subscribers are being fed , and most probably it won't change because SOE can't change they dont know how .
cheers
And right there we can see the problems facing both this game and the industry in general. They need to stop making every game the same!
If they keeping giving us things from EQ2 why wouldn't I just play EQ2? This premise is killing innovation, and that is precisely why SoE is synonymous with mediocrity.
sounds like you agree that you were insane.
Indeed.

So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you boys...I was terrified. But I pressed on, and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. Can't because like all embarassing posts I found it was unsearchable and probably deleted.
badgerbanger was arguing AGAINST server merges/free transfers because his group search tools idea was going to make things great on the dead servers.
Obviously it did nothing.
And oh, btw, SWG ALWAYS had group search tools, just not in the chrome shiney NGE UI, you always COULD search by profession, planet, etc. So really he advocated adding something that was already there. And the Devs wasted a whole publish on this idiocy. I note he got kicked from the Senate. Possibly because the Devs got embarassed by actually grasping onto a "senator" idea and implimenting it to public FAIL?

I was under the impression he STEPPED DOWN from the Senate ... and considering he's thrown his hat in the ring again for the Gameplay Senator position, I find it hard to believe he's angling for a job that he was drummed out of.

"Stepped down" is a nice way to get Blix out of the quandray of backing his lunatic proposal (and wasting months of Dev time on it) isn't it?
And as for going back, well, Blix and DevH are gone, there are new Devs in charge. Just as dumb as Blix, but I digress.

How many conspiracies have their been with SWG that actually happened? Many.
The CURB... Fantasy.. Sold to us as the improvement of the existing system.
We got? CU. Thrown together within weeks, radical change.
FRS disables after CU... Sold to us as " a new FRS has been designed, it's ready to go, we just need LEC approval"
We got? FRS was disabled on purpose to further the plan to nerf Jedi through the CU into a normal profession in preparation for the NGE.
"The CU is here to stay" (Smed in May 2005, when they clearly were already planning the NGE)
We got? The NGE... The complete deletion of the remnants of the skill and profession systems.
CU profession revamps, ranger revamp, smuggler revamp? Sold to us as fixing the problems created by the CU.
We got? NGE. Most of the stuff we wanted revamped was deleted instead.
Jedi will NEVER be a starter profession, promised during CU
We got? Starter profession Jedi.
How much of that, which became reality would have been dismissed as "conspiracy theroy" at face value back in the day?
Yet it all became reality.
So don't even bother accusing us of conspiracy mongering. Nothing we could INVENT could possibly surpass what has actually HAPPENED in the scandelous history of this game.
