travelling mercs vs. merc sellers?

nywlanasnywlanas Member Posts: 334

so there are two ways of getting mercenaries right? by talking to the ones travelling around and by buying one from the npcs.

my question is.. is there any difference in the two means of hiring mercs?

you can only buy shaman / sword / spear / gunner/ archer from NPC

you can get artillery and viking from wandering mercs.....

you can also higher a wandering shaman/spear/whatever, but It'll cost WAY too much!

quest for others....beast tamer at 44, witch somewhere around 50-55

oh cool. thanks for answering my question.

cos i'm already level30 and i want to get a monk but i dunno where to get one.

do you think that it's a good idea that i get a monk? i have the following formation:

    viking-sword-sword

    ------(blank)-----------

    gunner-cannon(main)-shaman

if ever i get a monk, what could i modify in my formation?

LITTERLY EVERYONE I talk to likes the monk....I do NOT.

you can quest for the monk, talk to NPC's around yellow river.

people like the monk because he can un-stun your characters and remove harmfull effects like freeze....

in PvP, monk is probably good.....I mainly do PvE(player vs enemy)...

when I had my monk in closed beta 2 and 3, he sat down on rear all the time and I used him maybe once out of every ten fights.....I say he sucks....

but do the quests anyways, you'll get good exp and money...if you don't like the monk, then just drop kick him into the merc room and get someone better :)

so aside from the monk, what other mercenary do you suggest that i get? and if ever, what could be a good formation if i get the mercenary?

well, you already have 1 gunner , 1 cannon, 1 viking.......any of these 3 would make another great merc.

viking if your trying to freeze.....gunner / artillery if you want to stun..

at 44 start the beast tamer quest. beast tamer have a nice defense, attacks with an ax, and her summon magic hits all enemies in 1 group.

I'm 50/50 on the witch....benefits of witch: your team will never run out of magic, EVER !!! meteor strike hits all enemies, and she counts as flying so she is hard to hit. works great with beast tamer.

downsides of witch: when she does get hit, it hurts a lot .

you can't use meteor strike untill at least turn 3, sometime more if you've been recharging your mana.

Anything C class is good. If you're still not at that level, you can fill up your middle ground with Gunners. If you got a spearman on top of that and an artillery, you will be good in PVP with decent PVE damage. Get the Beast Trainer and have one of your mercs replaced if you like. A beast trainer has decent PVE damage as well, and its AoE.

    thanks for the advice.

can i get C class mercs at level 30 already?

cos if not,  i'll prolly get a monk first just to test it. when i get to higher levels, maybe then i could think of a proper build for my team.

You can only buy the basic mercs like the sword gunner, spear, bow and the shaman... but they are a lot cheaper compare to those basic mercenary who always wandering in the road.. and it is easy to buy because buying from the npc doesnt requires will unlike in wandering mercs you need to have full will...

in high class mercs you can purchase them in the  market or you can do the quest but it will cost more...

Monk is very very very important, especially in pvp and some of the later dungeons. One example of this is during the exorcist quest, where you have to fight enemies that freeze your party. Unless you want your party to be frozen all the time. It is possible to not have a monk in your party, it's just very inconvenient.

it is more cheaper to buy mercs from the npc... because in travelling mercs you need will and try to give gifts to them... you will spend 50 to 100k just to hire a travelling mercs...

i used to think the monk sucked too until i learned the value of the monk in PVP, i agree freeze and stuns is more common in pvp than in pve but once your reach to the higher levels of 90s, freeze is becomes relatively common with the enemies,, and you have to remember the end game content of AtO is basically pvp, once you reach to higher levels you will soon learn the value of the monk...

i have a stunner team build and  as of now the only characters i intend to reamain in my team is my hero of course and the monk,, the rest will eventually be replaced by cannoneers princess orcalse exorcist etc

oh. thanks for mentioning the difference in prices of travelling mercs vs merc sellers. i thought that they only differed in the kinds of mercs i can hire. i'm going to try the quest near the yellow river and try to see if i get the monk. else, i have to hire a travelling one methinks.
