Today is the day of all days!

I use this final calm before the storm and my impatience to ponder a bit. We have Tuesday the 21st, at least here in the Old World, and this is, as I recall, the day where Bioware will reveal unto us what they were working at. Many rumored it would be a Star Wars MMO, and personally I very much hope so.

In a few hours I guess, whatever they reveal, the gaming forums will explode, heh. The fiery debates, the discussions will blow up everywhere.

Honestly I dont know if I am ready for anything else than a SW game. MAYBE a D&D game which plays in Faerun, thats the only alternative I would really find cool, too. Anything else would be a HUGE letdown for me, and maybe even a reason to leave MMOs behind by and large.

I think it is safe to say that Star Wars is the worlds biggest franchise and the most vivid modern myth. I mean, all respect to Star Trek and other IPs, but the stories of SW, the duality of Jedi and Sith, those are essential human myths, like a translation of ancient archetypes, things which move humans since the first days of civilization told in a new fashion. Good and evil, light and dark, love and hate. The stories revolve around very personal things and many of the SW characters themselves have become icons of culture. Star Wars deserves a good MMO, and the franchise needs one to expand. A good, successful SW MMO is what the thing misses, the cornerstone that is lacking.

I know some of you love the KOTOR solo games and maybe feel let down. Dont. A KOTOR MMO will certainly have much story telling and I guess if any MMO will succeed in catching the single player game spirit of adventure and story-telling its a MMO from Bioware. They never let us down, and I have great faith in their skills. Plus, it does not reign out a KOTOR 3. To those who are still wounded by SWG-NGE: it is time we let go and look at the chance of a new SW MMO with open eyes. Dont let our good days of SWG make our minds narrow in measuring a KOTOR MMO right away with SWG, neither in good or ill. Let us give it a chance in itself.

Let us all make this agreement that we dont spill hate over a game we hardly know. There will be time enough to moan and bitch later, when we experienced the game ourselves. Let us accept this young MMO as we would embrace a new lover: without measuring it to its predecessors, but looking at its value in itself.

I hope the Force is with us, my friends, at this day of all days. ^^

Like many i am hoping they announce a SW MMO, but just for a laugh I would love them to come out with something completely different like a single player flight simulator or some crap like that and watch the interwebs melt into a pit of SW fanboy tears

I won't go through every forum post about this subject, but you do realize that this is just for the press.  They have or will  have  an NDA attached for them to sign or already had them sign.

I would love to here it too, but i'm not optimistic it will be today or tomorrow.  We could get lucky. Anyone who does leak it wll face a backlash for doing so and maybe even lose their job.

But heres hoping for any word

Now I'm just wondering where is the fastest way to see the news as soon as it is released ...

Whats the point in doing announcement to the press just to make them adhere to an NDA.  That makes no sence why tell them in the first place if you don't want it to get out.

When you tell the press its for the specific purpose for the press to tell the public.  Thats the whole point of the press.

In any case if tomorrow is the day they actually announce their title(didn't know til I read this thread), then it should be quite exciting for any fan of the mmo industry.

All I know on one of the 20 or so websites I saw the news abut today. I forget which one. There was an NDA attached to this press release. Maybe to give bioware/lucasarts time to get a website up announcing it officially.

I'm inclined to agree with this.  I mean, to have an NDA not to promote or advertise screenshots or video footage is one thing - but you can't release stuff to the press and then tell them they can't talk about it.  Why tell them in the first place?

Not that any of that matters.  There are only 2 questions in everyone's mind right about now.

    1. Is it Star Wars?
    2. Is yes, is it like SWG Pre-Cu?

That's it.  The only thing anyone cares about right now are those two questions.  If they don't say anything else about the game, that would be enough.  The second question alone is proof enough just how mesmerizing Pre-CU actually was, and how royally screwed SOE is over this fiasco.  Not that they aren't already screwed... they're going down so hard it's not even funny.

Sure, they have The Agency coming out, but no one has heard anything about it for a year now, and it's being made for the console (big whoopty doo).  And then there is DC Universe Online... which looks atrotiously bad.

It is the official announcement of the game.  The entire reason they are inviting folks from the gaming press is to create hype and coverage for the game.  You don't hold press conferences for things you don't want anyone to find out about.  There will likely be partial NDAs to cover some details BioWare and LEC would rather not get out (for some reason, MMO developers think their working in Area 51 and that their version of WoW is something special that needs to be kept secret), but the IP of the game, and some of the game's features will be public knowledge after (possibly during) the press event.  LEC's website will likely be updated with a page for the game, and BioWare will quite possibly put up their own webpage.

The answer to number 2 is very likely to be "No".

Today is the day we live now.

OP: It's good to know that until now not ONE game lived up to it's non-gaming Lore.

Not even speaking of MMORPG's. The Harry Potters, Middle Earths and other Star Treks never left the grey masses and constraints of game design.

Always good to live today and not dream of unreachable powers tomorrow in a world that can't be entered by gaming.

Curiously the best series of games were always the ones with a pure gaming lore.

.Pokemon, Zelda, the ladder games, and the one with the 8-digit subscription numbers.

So hold on: lore will be NOT be a deceisive factor. Gaming value will.

That said, the next MMO's will certainly be about space. People and developpers are pretty much fed up with green orcs and grey ogres.

As a design the SF theme has far fewer limits in all departments (graphics, expansive worlds, etc...).

So yes be excited, but don't be too overhyped on a particular lore.

I'm highly looking forward to it. War is amazing for quick gratification and an overall artstic beauty to it that brings the fantasy genre, but let's face it, a mmorpg of depth and epic scope and atmosphere that feels new and fresh is only something a company like Bioware is capable of. They are the best at RPGs.

If they don't take what was awesome in pre-cu SWG and build the game around those kinds of ideas then I won't be buying the game. I'm tired of the cheap WoW-like games coming out so they better get it right.

Sandbox or no go for me.

Wow I feel deja-vu. Weren't these posts popping up around this same time last year?

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

Is there a live video stream of this, or a blog that will be running with live updates?

You are right, i mean of course if it is not a Pre-CE SWG clone it MUST be a WoW clone, good call on that one! It would just be idiotic to think they might have something unique for us?

I hate teary-eyed pre CU SWG vets who just can't let go.

I hope it will be nothing like SWG at all, and definitely not a 'sandbox' game. I love sandbox single-player titles, like Oblivion for example, where you can become a demigod and reshape the world around you as you wish. This will simply not work in a MMO environment.

Odds are you'll get your wish, another crappy WoW-wannabe so don't worry about it.

There is more than WoW and Sandbox.  Have you even played KOTOR?  Stop thinking inside your tiny little box and open your eyes.

Non-sandbox does not have to be a WoW-clone. You are one sad cynical antagonist, aren't you?

Reality: currently, while there might be a niche market for a pre-CU SWG-like game, one will most likely not be made. The market being where it is, and considering the unrivaled success of  WoW looming in the background, what do you think executives are greenlighting? Add to the mix Project Entropia and other 'virtual worlds' and a pre-CU SWG experience is simply not a viable product if you want to create serious revenue.

Don't stress, I'm sure you'll all get the game you want. I'm just giving my opinion on what I want, no need to get all bent out of shape over it, it's just a game...or will be.

I'm much more looking forward to the Rapture project, but honestly this game has the highest chance for bringing something original to the genre of anything on the horizon and it is coming out earlier than most.  I am very excited about where this goes.
